It would seem #pedomyths have been put to bed and are no longer thing.

In their place we now have:

For example #Omacmyths he had a poor first half against the Pies, a myth repeated by no less a DL luminary as Demonland himself on the DL podcast (which by the has led me to lose a bit of faith in his football analysis skills - i mean even if his bias affected his judgement during the game i have to assume by Wednesday he had watched the replay, but perhaps not) and not challenged by Grapeviney.

But there are so many others: not AFL standard, can't read the ball, no other team in the AFL would pick him, is only being picked to fast track his development  etc etc. What's your favourite?

how good was that mark in the final qrt. I don't think i've ever seen him drift in an have the confidence to take a grab vs halve the contest. Yes it's a sample size of one. Yet bloody good evidence.

Highly regarded by the club and he seems well aware of his weaknesses and what he needs to improve.

I've been wondering whether his improvement has been faster recently when big brother isn't in the backline.  They do tend to look for each other a bit and when Tom isn't there Oscar has to make the play more often and goes forward more often.  Oscar may yet become the better McD player!

I like the accompanying omac highlights package from Monday's game. Its almost as if it were put together for this thread and/or to dispel some #Omacmyths. Some nice first half highlights.

I also liked the fact the final highlight they play play to its conclusion - Watts' match winner!

That cant be right, only 26 games experience, and has inconsistencies in his game that may get better with experience. Should be killing it every week like I am certain Rance and May did every week at that stage of their careers.

Anyone else think he will be better than his brother?  He has shown lately some great signs and unlike Tom I don't have a heart attack when hes kicking the ball from the backline

Oscar was lucky to came in when we were short of rucks and we needed to throw in his bro for coverage. Since then I would say he has been not poor but just average. Against the Pies he showed signs of his early form last year where he was backing himself a bit more. He is still 21 and as a tall has plenty of upside still but it could go ether way. Having better coaching/development resources could just be the difference. Wouldn't have liked his chances of becoming an AFL standard player in year gone by. In any case most teams have 2nd or 3rd best defensive tall that don't set the world on fire

At present he is an undersized young inexperienced key defender,  let's reassess in 3 or 4 years time

Oscar has most definitely benefited from list shortages. Not entirely a bad thing .

Last years form is irrelevant. He deserved his place then. Like alot of players that are on the fringe they get games when they are in form and are dropped when not. Better players can sustain form slumps.

Given Tom rucked in the second halve Vs Pies and Oscar stepped up big time, it was a great game from a good developing key position back man. 

He's back on track.

As I recall Rance also copped a lot of criticism early in his career.

Great post binman, I just wanted to highlight this bit.

We were sitting up the end of this goal (so of course got a great view of Jack's winning goal). This passage of play was a great effort by Oscar, and looked a lot better live than it does on the replay, because if he'd stuffed up once out of about 4 separate efforts in a few seconds, it would have cost a goal.

He got the spoil against Moore I think, but then had to make two or three groundball efforts to keep it away from opponents, and then just as he disposed of it effectively, he was infringed and got the free. He was seriously outnumbered for some reason, under great pressure, and it was just a very very good piece of defending that any top KPB would have been proud of.

I've thought he will be for quite a while. 

But I don't think the bar is very high.

One of the funniest myths in fact. Fringe players yo yo in out of the side. think ANB, Kent, Stretch, Wagner and from last year Mat Jones. OMac has been dropped once in his career, came back after a week, been in since and in likelihood will play every game for the rest of the year. In fact i would go as far as saying he may not be dropped again for years. 

A fringe player? hardly. He is key member of our back six - now and in the future. I don't think the coaching staff can make that much clearer. 

By your logic when we have Jessie and Maxy back he, as fringe player who is lucky to be in the side and only got his chance because Spencer got injured (which given they could have brought Spencer in for OMac last week and this week but haven't is a tenuous argument), is sure to be dropped. But of course he won't be. And then you will have to rely on old #OMacmyths (they are just getting games into him for the future, its not about winning games now its about the future etc etc) or make up new ones (he's lucky the swans have two bigs in Reid and Franklin, he has photos)

Hey binman, you are probably reading a little too much into all this. This year Frost and his brother are well ahead of him for key backs. His form slump lasted 10 games plus preseason and we persisted with him early expecting him to return to form and then later due to injuries to backs and now rucks. While he plays like last week and last year he would get a game in my starting line up not because we want to develop him but on merit. He will also get a game when we have injuries to bigs if a little out of form as there is no one in the 2s left

Here is the thing with Oscar:

He just turned 21, was pick 53 in the draft and only has 26 games to his name.

He is young, was never expected to set the world on fire and has limited experience at the top level.

I think so far he has panned out just fine.

Yeah, a few things:

Tom is the better player.

Oscar is a promising kid who is developing at a normal rate.

Oscar is not best 22 in 2017.

He is progressing well and the fact that he is 'making so many mistakes with the he footy' as 21 year old with 26 games is a good sign. The hardest thing in footy is getting the footy.

But his brother and Frost are ahead of him in the backline for talls and they are more dynamic and versatile. Hibberd, Jetta, Salem, and Hunt are starting 18 backs and will make it hard for us to play the big three down back.

Magic game against the Doggies.Now I know why Coach Goodwin plays him.( he also played great last week against Pies)

Best complete game he has played without making too many errors and no diabolical errors.

Strong in the air, intercept marked well and generally used the ball well.

Have got to thank the work and pressure of the midfield also. Makes it easier for defenders to play well, especially key defenders.

Hopefully he continues this form next week against a tall West Coast side.

Respect. 

Best game I've seen from him, only one "McDonald" kick for the day. Everything else was spot on.
