As a law enforcement body we have a brilliant revenue collection service but not very good protection from crims.

That was my point.

Police are more likely to be collecting money than stopping crime.

Is that clear?

They even have a corporate relations sector!!

And God forbid, they have a HR section as well.  Absolute bulltish Biff.  You do the good men and women of the service a gross injustice.  As I said, the issues which currently exist within society, go beyond mere law enforcement

That is a societal problem, not a law enforcement issue alone.  As for doing 43 in a 40 zone?  There is a very simple solution to that; don't do it.  Problem solved.  Have to say though, interesting how you conflate a traffic offence with endemic social issues.

Interesting that you can only give the smug police retort of "don't do it" in relation to pi55 taking fines.

Then you pass off ice as a societal issue, police and govt run a massive DV campaign based on a death caused by non policing of an avo.

Far too much crapola about community attitude, thought campaigns, safety, ethnic tolerance ,driving slowly and not much actual stopping serious crime.

Of course Biff, it is all down to the do-gooder, tree hugging, PC, leftie loonies among us.  See ya later.

And as Ashton has so reasonably said on any number of occasion you can't address societies issues through arrests.

A great example of the problem of the 'law and order agenda' and 'get tough on crime' platitudes is the failure of this government to make the correct policy choice and trial (or god forbid just implement it without a trial, given the evidence of efficacy is crystal clear) a safe injecting facility in Richmond. They are too frighted to be seen as weak on crime so instead leave it up to the police,  paramedics, health services and local residents to deal with the problem of people shooting up in the alleyways and dying in their neighborhood.

In the 1990s Victoria became one of the first jurisdictions in the world to provide clean and free needles to injecting drug users. Why? Because it was good policy. Leaving aside the moral argument about a communities responsibility to keep its citizens healthy and saving lives it made economic sense. It stopped the spread of HIV in its tracks and dramatically slashed the number of people with Hep C. Both of these diseases are incredibly expensive to treat. In the intervening two decades or so that decision has saved Victoria billions in health care. And for this reason the Needle Exchange model has been adopted in all states and territories in Australia and in hundred of cities around the world, even in many US cities.

It is crazy to think that if proposed now the Needle Exchange program would likely not get up for the same reason that the safe injecting room is not being supported - it is might be seen as not tough on crime and legitmising drug use. Crazy stuff. As an example of the craziness not one government in Australia, labor or Liberal would roll these needle exchange programs back now. To do so would cost them way to much money in increased health costs.

Poor bastards cant take a trick.

I seriously feel for the average copper who has to confront the sh1tbags of society on a day to day basis, only to have complaints filed against them for offending some poor druggie. Seriously, who would wanna be one nowdays when the force had gone from upholding the law to upholding the peace. Command seems FAR more concerned with using wet lettuce leaves when the bloke actually confronting society's dirt would love to pull out his/her batton and smash some of these crims around the head.

Remember the pics of rows of coppers standing still while having water and (probably) urine thrown over them during the G-something-or-other meeting in Victoria a while back? I would have lost my shyt at management for allowing that to happen. What a great way to destroy your employees morale and confidence in the bosses.

Lets also remember how the front line guys at the Lindt seige fully expected to be blown to bits when they stormed the place but still went in without hesitation when upper management FINALLY got the message that softly-softly wasnt working. Leadership (including the wigs) need a clean out, and a serious rethink of how the law is enforced.

Until i know what rules the guys were shackled with, i woulnt be criticising anyone involved in this incident.

End rant.

Couldn't one of the moderators move this thread to the non football one or perhaps even close it off.

The thread  was originally written to praise Leoncelli's absolute bravery, and anyone who has seen him play would have expected nothing less.

It has now degenerated into two camps, one lauding our gallant boys in blue and the other thinking that their efforts were reminiscent of the Keystone cops. Both sides seem to be equally ignorant and immoderate.

As in all these cases there no doubt, will be an inquiry into how well  the police conducted themselves as well as the trial of the person who put so many lives at risk.

I hate to be seen as pro censorship but the bravery of Andrew, in particular,  and also the other passengers seems to have been forgotten by people with axes to grind.

Needle exchange programs are only that in name.. I work at a hospital and can tell you that we have not had a single needle exchanged in 2 years. Filthy users drop them where they use them and just come back for fresh supplies. Great for their health, but stuff the innocents who come across the used ones hey?

The general consensus on cops in Australia stopped me from wanting to be one, a lot of peoples thoughts about them is just gross

what? you can read posters thoughts now? and anyway i haven't seen evidence here of gross comments about cops. quite the contrary. the comments you were referring to presumably were identifiably aimed at the command structure and political overlords.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
