    He’s dropped off big time in the past 1-2 years. Whether that’s the poor environment he’s stuck in or him as player losing struggling I’m not sure. 

    Not sure he’s the best target for us now, despite our inexperienced key defensive depth.

    Would have to be Tyson, Frost and a 2nd or 3rd round pick i'd imagine? But maybe we're still raffling duds in their eyes. I think we'd then go in with MAY on the best forwards, OMAC on 2nd best and Lever on the third man like with Adelaides defence in 2017. And play Oscar in the VFL if no matchup. Lewis retires and makes way for Salem or sticks it out on rotation. Jetta on crumber. Hibberd and Hunt off half back. I like it.

    Would it be fair to say that a final decision needs to be made on Frosty once and for all before that happens? And by that I mean, play him for the rest of the year. Give him a chance.

    Give Frost a chance? 

    He's been given a chance in almost every position possible on the football field. 

    Unfortunately for him, (and fortunately for us watching) his weaknesses won't allow him to be a consistent AFL player.

    Sure, but he has by some accounts acquitting himself reliably in the 2s.

    So...do we take the view he may have improved.

    In any case, what's the other option....

    Now we have Lever, I think May would be a good get. GC would want too much though. They cannot afford to lose May. Their franchise hinges on being competitive at some point (soon). They need to sign Lynch and keep May.

    May is a contracted captain of another club. We just overpaid for Lever as though it would fix all our defensive issues and now can't burn a 3rd first rounder on May. Our midfield is terribly unbalanced and we can't spend another 1st rounder on the backline.

    Jordan Roughead as a free agent would provide a 200cm 105kg key defensive option and genuine ruck depth if Gawn went down. I appreciate he's not quite a full back and not quite a ruckman, but we desperately need some mature bodies and extra height back there. Oscar is always 2 years away from having the necessary strength, and it seems there is no competition for his spot given the club has banished Frost. Roughead would be a much better free hit for us than coughing up a first rounder for May.

    Does this mean the end of Oscar? He's had a couple of ordinary weeks but overall he has had a good year. Persist with Oscar and hope Lever can comeback somewhere near his best we need a running half back or 2 any out there?

    I think they're in a position to have to trade unhappy players,,,, for some 'mature leaders', and other mature GOF's...

    They need leaders, like we need pace.

    What they'd give for a Nathan Jones up there.

    They need leaders...  quality.

    No, obviously not. He is a young and developing player. 

    However, it's the only line we have that lacks depth, quality and experience. And it's remained that way since Dunn left. 

    Frost, Keilty and Petty are not depth yet as we saw with Petty. Two of them are untried and Frost is a mistake ridden athlete who is the furthest thing from the word 'consistency' one could think of. 

    The fact we don't have a mature body with either experience at AFL level or the level under is a serious oversight by Goodwin and the recruiting team. 

    You look at Weideman VS Oscar McDonald and compare the way in which they've been handled over their careers. One has been made to play out of necessity rather than form. The other one is in his third year and has been dropped again after one poor game due to depth and talent. Weideman was a top end pick. Oscar a pick in the 50's.

    It doesn't make sense to me. It should be our priority over the off season along with diversifying our midfield mix. 

    You get rid of Frost, Tyson and Bugg over the off season and bring in May, Gaff and a half forward who is quick, skilled and pressures and watch our team transform.

    He does fix our problems.  Our backline was on fire before he went down, and that was due in large part to his leadership, footy IQ and footy skills.  You are selling the bloke short.

    As for this years top 20 being 'exceptional' - we've all heard that before.  Our first rounder this year still has every chance of being around about the 11-12 mark, which isn't superb by any stretch.  The last 'super draft' that everyone refers to from 2001 had far more misses than hits.

    If you take out Judd, Ball and Hodge as the Top 3, an area we wouldn't have been picking in anyway, from picks 4 through to 30 only Bartel (#8), Dal Santo (#13), James Kelly (#17) and Steve Johnson (#24) could be considered gun picks.  There are a heap of no name players who did nothing with their careers.  After pick 30 you had guys like Sam Mitchell, Leigh Montagna, Dane Swan (pick #58!), Jarrad Waite andBrian Lake (#71) all taken in the second round and beyond.  They can talk it all up all you like, but I think having what is considered a strong Top 20 works in our favour.  Jason Taylor has a proven track record of securing talent later in the draft and I'd back him in to do so again.

    We didn't overpay at all for Lever.  We paid market value for a bloke with 50 games under his belt and almost AA selection in his first few seasons in the game.

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
