A big fish

In the not to distant future an out of contract petracca, Oliver, gawn, hogan, hunt etc might well be considered big fishes, we just have depth of talent

Priority must be to retain what we've got.

Hibberd was a good get this year...identified a need.

Elite kick but also hard at it and strong over head.

Forget the big fish, pick off what we don't have. What we need.

Oooh, I like this thread because it gives me another chance to bring out my broken record about 'value' for trades and players.

The obvious example is Hawthorn getting the likes of Frawley, Gibson, Hale, and Gunston. Even Burgoyne was a little slice off being 'big fish'. But all were legitimate players who were taken when a bit off their best and found or rediscovered their best form once they moved to Hawthorn. And all were chosen because they filled a specific need.

Something I've been fascinated by over the last decade or so is the way many of the top teams rise in two 'waves'. First wave is typically a surge of young talent which gets them into contention (or in Hawthorn's case, and arguably the Bulldogs, sneaks them a much earlier than expected flag), and then there is a period of adjusting, working out the remaining gaps to create a fully functional team without a key weakness that can be exploited by quality finals opponents.

All of Geelong, Hawthorn, St Kilda, Port and Collingwood have been through that first and second peak process. Even Brisbane dropped out of the top four, back to just 12 wins, before then surging again for the three-peat.

Presuming that the Dogs' surprise win kind of emulates what happened with the Hawks, it is going to be a very interesting next few years to see how the three clubs stocked with lethal young guns (Dogs, GWS, Demons) are going to evolve.

Not a big fish but keep an eye out for Tim Taranto from GWS.

Not sure he is what we need. Seems to be able to do everything well except kick.

Does have a good radar for the goals though.

Cats needed Ottens to get first flag.

Not Judd or Danger but added real structure when they were struggling with Charlie Gardiner and Henry Playfair.

Why do you say that?

He was pick 2 in the most recent draft, a huge talent and looked great tonight.    He would cost us our first rounder at a minimum.

Our first rounder would be a good price...a pick 2, still young with some exposed form for say our first pick at 10 - ???? would be a steal.

Keep an eye open for moore, my quiet tip

That would be a variation on the father son rule - both father and son playing for the same two clubs. Can't think of another example of this.

Might be me. Not overly impressed with Moore

Why would the Pies trade the only young key forward they have?

They don't need to be a big fish if they fit a role we have a need for.

No rumour, he just looks unhappy and not fully determined. Particularly his body language, i suppose, like his dad, loved the big stage. We'll see....

"We'll see" reads that you know something WM

Friend of the Moore family? Someone inside the MFC? or went to school with Darcy??

not having a go at you, but "to watch this space" means you have heard something...

I have been brought up to be a student of "body language"

As have i, which is what interests me about your original comment.

It's the subtle signs you have to look for.

The way he makes little horns with his fingers on his temples.

The fake pitchfork he likes to pretend to throw at the CFC cheer squad after each oppo goal.

The way he put AHG on his jumper and removed the back of jumper sponsor logo.

The way he turns his back when his teammates sing the club song and instead sings "should auld acquaintance be forgot" over and over.

It all adds up to the trained eye when it's in "clusters" like that.

Not happy at The Filth?

Would much rather go the hawthorn rote and get one quality player that fulfills a need. E. G Hibberd is a perfect example.

We need a quality talk backmen who can stand the Danihers, Hawkins, Pattons etc and ideally a good kick. Hawks god gibson, lake and Frawley knowing how vital they can be.

Yes history shows spending $1.5 m on Fyffe will improve you but no one has won a premiership. We don't want a jealous group.

I totally agree. The backline still needs a lot of work

Also, according to rumours he's not exactly the most popular player at Freo. That brings its own baggage.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
