Your latter examples are not of selection but of list management, which is not the role if the head coach though no doubt he has a big input.

Don't really see any correlation between Trengove and Dunn. Trenners has only one thing on his side. Youth. If he can become a Sam Mitchell type then he can play a role in footy. Dunn doesn't have the physical limitations Trengove does, or the nasty injury history. And has some good AFL footy left in him. But his the opposite end of the age spectrum to Trengove.

I'm with you on Dunn. I hated him for about the first 7 years of his career. Then his last couple of seasons at Melbourne I saw him beat gorillas again and again and became a fan. I was surprised to see him go since we were playing for finals and needed all the mature bodies we could find. That said, it's not a dumb move by the demons. He's not in the age bracket we need for the future, so it sort of makes sense to move him on. He might play a couple of ok seasons in and out of the pies side... but really, we're looking to the future. I reckon it's not a "mistake." Just a win-win that he was traded out.

What is true is that if you look at areas where we do need more talent or competition for positions, it is key defensive posts and an extra ruckman

Roos' tactics were laughable that game, and it wasn't just Dunn's fault. Any coach with half a brain would have had someone run with Reiwoldt, and have an additional player drop back into the zone. Reiwoldt was basically playing as a loose man in their forwardline.

Like many, I liked Dunn, and believe that he was a far better option in our backline last year than O Mac.

One thing I learned a while ago is that you never know what the coaches are telling the players. I was privvy to being in the pre-game briefing and it was an eye opener about the roles players have. My guess is that Dunn wouldn't follow instructions. I may be totally wrong but the coaches lose patience pretty quickly when a player doesn't adhere to structures, game plans etc. It's aften why we see criticism of a player on 'Land yet the coaches keep them in the side.

I am no OMac fan - he has little intensity, no body strength and is like a deer in the headlights - but he must be doing something the coaches like (or at least he must have been until he got dropped a few weeks back....

Yep. It is very rare one game ends a career of a player at a club and i guess it is not the really the case with that game. But as you say that game stamped his paper

Dunn is bubble gum trying to patch a leak in the titanic, he's past his best and the club had already committed to keep Garland on. 

I always kinda liked Dunny, he was an honest toiler and like many others suffered from our clubs inept ability to develop our players so I feel he wasn't able to reach his full potential with us. 

As for OMac v Dunn, Dunn's ahead but he's more experienced. I think OMac will improve and become a solid defender for us. 

I seem to remember Hawkins has had many field days against us, with Dunn in the side as well. Move on Sunshine.

How do you know Roos' tactics wouldn't have worked better if Dunn hadn't correctly followed instructions?

This is the old "I know better than the coach" thing again.  It's getting tedious.

Dunn is 30 next week. Old news. Literally.

I actually find it tedious when supporters just accept that the coach is always right. If that's the case, why do so many get sacked?

Still feel we don't know the full story of why Dunn was suddenly on the outer. I would love to know but don't think we will get a real answer until he perhaps retires. One year he was vice captain coming off a brilliant year or two at full back and the next he was plarying regular vfl without a call up ....

Dunn was one of the big factors in our win against the Cats in 2015 because he completely shut down Hawkins.

If we were to crucify every player for one major blunder like that each week Moon then many in the current 22 would most likely be playing much of the year at Casey. And we would probably only be able to field about 8 senior players....

At the moment the Pies have a reasonable defender on their list who is healthy and playing AFL football again (as of last week anyway) Pates.  They might both be past their best but so far the Pies are slightly ahead on the Garland v Dunn ledger.  We will have to wait and see on both counts.

Unfortunately for Dunny that torp may have been the final straw, as he did not play for us again despite some good form in the VFL. 

Other players make blunders, such as Bernie's kick out last week. But with Roos' defensive push on restricting oppo scoring, a low % torp after a behind flies in the face of what was being instilled in them at the time.

There's a difference between a blunder and a player deliberately defying the game plan and set ups, resulting in a turn around goal. 

All players practice torps at training. It's a child-like urge to kick the leather off the ball and watch it spiral. There is a reason it's almost never done in a senior game.

Look at the context of this one example rather than using all player blunders as a way of defending Dunny's mistake

 Can't recall how that part went down.  Worth visiting again regardless! What happens when you play as a committed 22! Need to serve it up to this mob again in the return match!
