I think I'll be disappointed if we have to part ways with Watts or Salem if it is only part of trying to secure Lever, however if the MFC has greater plans and are trying to secure some other players, Gaff or ... whoever it is @ Geelong that people are speculating on, and in order to do that we need to release some of talent on our list then I might be up for that.

It will be about the sum of the gains / losses

if looking at trades it's only EVER about this.

I understand the notion of club fabric etc but if that's not impacted detrimentally  then it's all about getting in the Betterers !!

Trying to recall the last "big fish" we traded for.

I suppose it was Mitch Clark.

Dees don't have a good record when it comes to ending up on top in the big trades. Starting with my name sake and moving on... Peter Moore, Kelvin Templeton and the list goes on and on.

Hope this deal proves me wrong ... different times... different players.

Overall I prefer the slightly lower profile trades like Hibberd for a second rounder or whatever it was.

While we talk Lever it is interesting to recall what Dangerfield was traded for. Considering he is the best player in recent times to be traded he is a good benchmark.

"GEELONG has sealed the Patrick Dangerfield trade with Adelaide.

The Cats have given up young midfielder Dean Gore as well as picks No.9 and No.28 to snare the superstar midfielder.

The Cats gain Dangerfield and Adelaide's third-round draft pick, currently No.50.

Gore was pick No.55 at the NAB AFL Draft but was on the verge of senior selection early in 2015 before he suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to miss seven weeks.

He then returned strongly to be part of the selection mix late in the season averaging more than 20 touches a game at VFL level on at least three occasions.  "

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-10-12/young-cat-set-to-move-home-as-part-of-dangerfield-deal

So for one of the best players in the league Geelong gave up pick 9 and 28 plus a VFL player.

It seems to me that offering our first and second round for Lever is by comparison way overs.

Pick 10 will do the deal for lever. No way will Melbourne give up watts or Salem as well.

Hibberd and now Viney making comment. I liked it much better when we STFU. Hopefully we get Lever. If not I suggest the MFC turn up to the draft wearing "I'm with stupid" signs around their necks

I don't believe the captain would tweet something like this if it wasn't a huge chance to happen.

Personally I think it's just about over the line, just waiting for the Crows season to finish and the compensation picks agreed upon.

They are just answering a question.

Adelaide want it both ways: they think he's worth the insulting amount of $300k pa but believe him to be worth 2 X first rounders. Yeah, sure...

Lever could put a huge price on his head (front loaded) and go into the draft for us to use at 10 and they'd get zilch for him

At the moment we are all speculating about speculation.  As I understand it, there are no deals done outside of the trade period.  We have not even spoken to Adelaide.  Reporters can ask players a question "Would you like Lever at the Dees"?  And report the answer (creating news) .  So far, I have not seen an unsolicited statement from anyone.  We should not even be talking to him now as he prepares for the finals matches in front of him.  We may have spoken to his agent, but the rest is either 'pre-negotiation signalling' or speculation.

All the flogs in the media who suggest picks and players know NUTHINK.  I am pleased that the Dees play things close to their chests, and dont leak these days, only signal.  We are not the only ones in the running for Lever.  When he comes out in the media and selects us as his preferred destination - then GAME ON!

Who said that Adelaide believe that Lever is worth $300k pa? I reckon that article by some tinpot journo was a piece of crock. They re-signed Milera to a $1m for 3 years last year, and see Lever as a potential captain.

And clubs like North, Saints and Carlton (who had the cap space to go after Kelly) would snap up Lever before pick 10.

IMO, I reckon that Adelaide has asked Lever to be honest about his intentions so they could plan going forward. After Lever told them he's leaving, they upped their offer to McGovern, and re-signed him.

Yours is as speculative as mine mo64. Only Milera, his manager and the AFC would know the bolded part.

i thought one of the articles said that lever had been on $300k and the crows had offered him more but he still saw this as a low ball price.

Interesting reading that bit about what Dangermouse went for, certainly puts things in perspective. Maybe our first round pick plus a sweetener like Kent or upgrading future picks will be enough.

If we were to give up either Watts or Salem in the deal you'd hope we would get something back for them as well. Lever isn't worth a first round pick plus a best 22 player (anyone that thinks either of those two aren't are kidding themselves).

Probably just the Media with payback to the Dees for all the hateful comments we have been making about their unstoppable stupidity.

I love the Media but gees i feel so sorry for someone who has to be more stupid than the next to be noticed.....

Except that for most of us, this would take an enormous amount of work.

The media seem to do it effortlessly.

They want two first round picks - sounds like they get their bargaining strategies from Demonland.  They low balled him at $300k, they knocked back a good offer for Gibbs. I think we need to approach this with clear air - We should pay fair, but not overs to Adelaide for the trade.  He wants to come, so let him!  Offer a pack of burger rings and a used toothbrush, and lowball them for starters...

Because that worked out so well for Adelaide. :P Pay what is fair and get the trade done (2017 first rounder and 2017 or 2018 second rounder), so we can move on to other trades that will continue to improve our list.

I'd say it's already a done deal, hence players talking about it. Particularly, as Viney was at the alleged meeting between Lever and MFC people.

Hope so Adam, otherwise we'd have many eggs on our face.

Still, wouldn't be a bad thing to shut up until it's signed, sealed and delivered.

I see Jakes dad Alan has settled in real well over in one of the MFC facebook pages!

Welcome to the Dees Jake.

We can give the Crows two first round picks aslong as we are getting picks back with Lever. If Hogan wanted to go back to WA we would want two first rounders also... Fair is fair. Jake is only 21.

I think this works for both parties.

OUT - Pick 10, 45 & 2018 First rounder

IN - Jake Lever, Pick 17, 2018 2nd rounder

2017 Picks remaining after trade - 17, 27, 64, 82

It leaves the MFC in a strong postion to trade for a Gaff or Blicavs.

Yeah, my old man who reads that page told me Lever's old man has been on that page for at least a fortnight now, so it's been a done deal for a while now IMO.

A quick Facebook stalk has him even 'liking' the Casey page!

Does anyone have a contact within Australia post? If so, ask them to quietly check if Lever has redirected his mail.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
