No doubt that helps in the long run, but Oliver had 20+ very good touches and got a rising star nom in his first game as a porky 18 year old. Roos and co are good, but not 4 month miracle workers. Taylor drafted pure talent and it's been on show since.

Where the development takes him is even more exciting.

As for the the rest of the thread re Trealor, he was easily their best mid the year he left.

The recruiting over the last 5 years has been marvelous, the only really big miss has been Toumpas, (and maybe Dawes but he wasn't a draft pick). But good starts to careers in the previous 4 years proved to be mirages with many of our players:

Cale Morton: averaged 23 possessions in first 20 games

Blease:  20, 17 and 28 possessions in games 2, 3 & 4

Strauss: 20, 21 & 17 possessions in games 3, 4 & 5

Gysberts: 21 & 27 possessions in games 1 & 2

Tapscott: 19 & 23 possessions in games 1 & 2

I'm pretty sure there were some Rising Star Nom's that went along with these performances as well.

I thought about them when I mentioned Oliver's first game. The difference is he was in the guts against one of the best midfields in the league. And has continued on.

Yeah, I wasn't attacking your conclusion, - because he really looks different.(Hope we don't jinx him).  Just comparing that to our bleak previous history.

Because as we know you can't get rid of all your list cloggers in one draft.  If taking one for another means you get cheap deals on other players where is the cost?

Marchbank and Pickett will be very good players.  The balance were steak knives.

Indeed. Palmer and Lamb were salary cap dumps. Take them on and you can pay less in draft picks for the players you want.

Gysberts played his first game in the guts against Geelong in their prime and went toe to toe with Abblett.

His debut game was every bit as good as Olivers.

We are doing things much differently now. Oliver will be a star. Taylor would never have taken Gysberts but it doesn't change the first game facts.

Dear Jason Taylor

Please find the MFC a great CHB

Thank you

The Demon faithful.

I seem to recall that the pick we were hoping to get for the Trengove deal to the Tigers was earmarked for Jake Lever, who looks a very solid defensive player for Adelaide.

Correct and he would be perfect for our needs...

Right. Well, each to their own. Their midfield is good, but nowhere near as good as it was with him in it. He was worth 2 first rounders too.

The knock on trealor from Collingwood supporters is his disposal. Gws pushed him out to create salary cap space and spread the age of their talent pool by using him and other picks as currency for the future

Once they knew he wanted to go, they used it as an opportunity to spread the age of their list. But make no mistake, he would have been a massive loss for most clubs and may still prove to be a massive loss for GWS. And yes, his kicking is his weakness, but it's also the weakness of a lot of A graders.

Jake Leve comes out of contract at the end of this year and is yet to resign so far.

What year was Jason Taylors first draft with the MFC?   Was it 2015?

Looking at our drafting history and trying to work out when he took over

He came in the same off-season that we drafted Salem and Tyson and Hunt (so end of 2013). There's a video out there somewhere that shows Hunt with all his mates as his name is read out, and it is definitely Taylor that reads it out.

And the we ended up with Hibbard who has been huge for us, so I'm not that disappointed the Lever thung didn't work, you can't get them all.

Indeed we do. Mitch Hannan you little beauty

Have been super impressed with Hannan's continued improvement.  He has some good tricks inside foward 50 and pleanty to offer around the ground as well.  Thinking about some of the goals he kicks a fair few of them could be described as cheeky little cheap goals, but they all count for 6 points and previously we almost lacked for a player to kick those sort of goals and could dominate the inside 50s for little reward.

I've heard next year's draft is a cracker. This year's is shallow. Would JT consider a deal involving our 1st rounder + player this year to Hawks for their 1st rounder next year (assuming future pick rules petmit)? Gets them back in early this year for another ridiculous high profile trade and gives us a second 1st rounder for 2018 draft.

Obviously not as simple as that, but you get my intent.

We'll probably end up with early first round picks in both drafts. Not only are Taylor and co good at drafting they're good at dealing as well.

Hannan is a smart, balanced player, a good decision maker and rarely turns the ball over. Contributes each week. Well done to the recruiters.

I'm going to take Saty's line on this and leave it in the hands of those in the think tank that have displayed considerable acumen and results with little to play with in terms of draft picks.

I have complete faith.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
