Just for you!  http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/brownlow-tracker-round-8-melbourne-youngster-clayton-oliver-begins-to-make-serious-run/news-story/0c0d03cb6875ee81848716319b47c310

Summary:

  • HS - not in top 7
  • The Age - leads voting
  • Triple M - 6th
  • SEN - not in top 10...(what games are their vote givers watching!!)
  • 3AW - leads voting
  • Crownbet (Brownlow) - 7th on $21

Their voters must watch the 'name' players rather than who is performing and impacting games to not see what Clarrie is doing.

Also there is an 'East Coast' bias - Elliot Yeo is leading the Coaches voting.  The only one of the above to have him in their top vote getters is SEN where is 7th.

Lets hope the umpires don't suffer the same biases as the media.

On Clarrie's winning prospects, now that Viney has hit form he will start taking votes from him.  Maybe they can be 1st and 2nd in everything!! :o

Just noticed he tops Inside Football Player Ratings:

1. OLIVER, Clayton Melb 61
2. MERRETT, Zach Ess 60
3. MURPHY, Marc Carl 59
4. MITCHELL, Tom Haw 59
5. EBERT, Brad Port 59

More statistical fun... Footywire is great. Shows you rankings for all the stuff you want to know. Click on Clarry and you get this... I know they sort of make their stats look pretty to get you to come back. But regardless... this is the kind of All Australian stats that only Hawks and Cats got in the last 5 years.

Crazy. Every team gets some silly stats for some kid that's just joined the comp. We all know these numbers can be altered. Ellis for example at Tigers had so many disposals early on they thought they had a player. Dalziel is another famous one. What I love about Clarry is his resistance to naysayers. It even appears on the page. People are TRYING to find a knock on him and the only one they can find is that he doesn't kick that much. Firstly it was a lack of pace. Something that he's shown he's not encumbered by.

I don't believe necessarily that he can play through a tag just because of his game type. If it can happen to Sloane it can happen to Clarry. However...

The things he has ingrained in him, that are either impossible to teach or very hard to improve... they're all there from day one at league leading standard. The effortless touch. Speed of hands. Accuracy. Vision. These aren't things that can go away with a knee injury. Or lessen as he ages, like pace does. We've seen guys like Simon Black and Sam Mitchell play the slow guy quick hands role... But did we see them this young? Sam Mitchell needed a season using only his wrong side before he got drafted mature age. Also Clarry can play this role for a long, long time.

We need to plan every game we now play as if Clarry is going to get a tag. If he doesn't then great. But we need to be prepared for it nonetheless, as his form this year and our subsequent midfield rise is not a coincidence.

If he gets a tag, take him forward maybe? Constantly swap him and Petracca between Mid and Half Forward?

I got the impression that the Crows worked him more harder with pressure than usual. Didn't faze him though.

Jones and Viney will like the sound of that

North don't have anyone worth tagging so I guess Bernie can just hunt the ball!

Higgins?

I could not believe he didn't win GOtW, it was absolutely freakish and I 100% maintain that had it been Betts, Rioli, or another "name" player it would've been given more of a run.

Seriosly would've said close to goal of the year.

Voting is still open for goal of the week

I thought I saw something that the Port player got the nod for the week. Maybe not.

He always looks composed and even if he cops a hit he just shrugs it off and gets on with it, it will be interesting to see how he copes with a tag, which will come soon, I would imagine.

I was all for Parish and I'm happy to say I got it wrong.

Jason Taylor has really earnt his pay cheque on this one.

Parish was a lock for us at pick 4 in that draft. His credentials were superb.

Parish is a good, slightly better than ordinary footballer. Not sure he will reach great heights.

If Clarry doesn't get the nod this week that means he can't get GOTY.

If his goal is not in the running for GOTY that would be a massive joke on the award. Olivers was deliberate for a start. Westoff's was kick and hope.

But knowing PA supporters and how little they have to do between collecting their Centrelink cheques I suspect they will be hitting the voting lines big time to make it happen for their boy.

The conjecture around whether it hit the post or not will work against him. Flogs like KB made sure there was plenty of doubt placed in people's heads.

Goal of the year, mark of the year, the Chas, the coaches award, AA spots.... We play for one thing, and that it to be the best team. The rest are just fun facts.

The real fact is that the goal kick started us to smash a team that we probably should have gone down badly to.

I'll take that over a fan based (sigh) voting system.

He will. Took balls of steel to overlook him for Oliver at the time.

Absolutely correct decision though. Superb judgement call by JT.

Demonlanders wanted Ollie Wines but recruiters went Toumpas.

Demonlanders wanted Oliver and whilst Parish is good, Demonlanders got our man.

Oliver could be Dangerfield like, if he runs with the footy and kicks forward more. He is a competitive beast to go get the footy.

Really? I thought he worked them over far more than the other way round

Why so negative? Danger, schmanger!

Jude Bolton on ESPN listed the 5 most improved players this year. Given his obvious Swans bias he put Zac Jones first but had Clarry second... Not bad considering we haven't played the swans so I'm not sure when Jude would have seen him play this year... Maybe he does watch us occasionally due to the Paul Roos connection?

I don't have the capability, but I'd love to see a gif of "that" handball :)

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
