Last night I was so annoyed!!  I couldn't watch the game on my computer of apple mirror it - both things I have done every other season.  I cancelled my subscription at quarter time ans subscribed on the site https://www.watchafl.com.au/?gclid=CMbi88eTm9ICFYWXvAodV6wMHA.   It's a bit dear but worth it to be able to watch every game.  We have a family member in the team and there is no way the grandparents, cuzzies, friends and other rellies can all gather round the i phone to watch!!

are you overseas?

or,  do you intend to use a vpn and spoof that you are overseas. a  previous poster said that watchafl are now checking for known vpn sites so you may have to experiment a bit

Not sure why the international pass is not free or a lot cheaper.

The number of users would be miniscule and if the AFL wants to grow the game internationally no one who is not a rusted on AFL expat would be prepared to pay. No use comparing it to the cost for the equivalent NBA, NFL, EPL passes. They really do have world wide followings.

In Asia the game is carried on the Australia channel which shows that none of the main sporting channels are prepared to carry it. The Australia channel is just another expat channel in the lifestyle section. Few Asians would even know it exists.

Funny I do the reverse on those few occasions I want to watch the replay on the AFL site as it is blocked internationally ie. I set my vpn to Australia

Wonder if that will be blocked this year

With the new update it doesn't work for me anymore.

Are you talking about the local afl app or international watchafl app.

i wouldn't stream the local one because the quality is poor. I used the international one last year through the web browser of my smart TV and got HD. Better than what was in free to air.

hoping to do the same this year but through casting it from an iPad because TV browsers can be clunky and not easy to turn the vpn off and on.

i have a chromecast but haven't been able to get it to work. Just wondering if anyone has had any luck with the Apple TV.

It's possible to get rid of the 7" display on the iPad by enabling zoom on the iPad in settings general accessibility

and then three finger tap  to bring up the menu and select full screen zoom and then use the slider to decide how much zoom you want remember to three finger tap to cancel the zoom later as your menus can become unusable with zoom on

Not much help with casting to TV but easier to watch than 7"

I know someone with Foxtel and they don't use their foxtel Go. Anyone know if I can use their log in?

If they have foxtel go in their account that means they are entitled to have it on so many devices. Does not distinguish between who is in physical possession of the device. So yes... you can use it.

It may formally breach the terms and conditions but in practice I do not see how such a breach could be enforced.

So after going thru this thread, is fair to say the AFL, Telstra and Foxtel are a bunch of conniving, cheap [censored].

Taking customers for granted is a slippery slope.

Totally. Taking the customer totally for granted.

Foxtel want some protection of their rights that they paid $100million+ for? And people are surprised?  I watched on my Telstra mobile service for free.  No complaints here.

I think most are complaining the goals posts shift yearly via fine print with little notice, and the average punter is treated like a funding source rather than a customer. Sooner or later technology always finds a way to bypass them.

So let me get this straight. Last year I was able to watch replays 24 hrs after the game by tuning into the afl website, "video/watch replay", and watch the game during the season proper free of charge. Will i still able to do this for this season? I don't need to watch football live.

it looks like the (free) smart-replay has disappeared. i haven't noticed any comment from the afl, but that is not unusual

I have been using the app for 4 years. We we told the new app will be better than the old. Changes were added to the terms and conditions without informing existing users who mostly roll over automatically. The new 7 inch display is also of low resolution and only fit for phones. Looks terrible and  almost unwatchable on my iPads. We were cheated.

When you signed up for auto renewal did the contract say they could chage the T&Cs?  If not complain to consumer affairs.

200 games @ $100 = 50c per game.

The amount of whinging going on about this is extraordinary.

They announced when the broadcast rights deals were confirmed that Telstra afl live pass would be truncated to seven inches; no one bothered to pay attention.

These companies are here to make money not provide a benevolent service.

The watchafl international geolocation can be tricked if yr running an OTT vpn service, and it will also have all the fox footy mag shows available on it - it's pretty decent value really, certainly if I didn't have foxtel it's what I'd be buying.

Yeah they have it all locked up tight this year. That geoblock works very well on WatchAFL.

I thought id try it over the weekend. And found it super hit and miss. I found a vpn service that was working then the next day it wasnt, tried another 5 or 6 before finally finding another that worked. I'm happy they have a long trial period because I'm not super confident I'd pay for it just yet... but it is still possible... I am a little conserned that as soon as I consider to actually pay for it they will block more and ill be screwed. The servive is 100% worth the money given i can split it with a friend (2 simultaneous streams) but its just a question if it will work... It just makes me sad that they wont offer such a good service to their local fans...

We perfectly understand Foxtel is a business and is seeking to increase profit. No problems there. But there were two other parties in those contract negotiations, the AFL and Telstra. Telstra is also a business, but the AFL are supposed to represent the interests of the players, fans and the game itself. In the case of broadcasting via the app, they did not. They have limited the represented IT platforms, reduced the video quality, and absolutely stuffed up accessibility with the upgraded app. As far as apps goes, it looks good, but is too busy, too limited, and a lot of its basic functions are not working.

No one on here expects a large company to be a benvolent society. But we do expect those people who are supposed to be representing our interets as fans (and it is our money that generates the game) to represent our interests. The current app simply fails at this.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
