What!?!?! This is news to me! He's still at work so I haven't spoken to him yet.

I wonder why they've done this, if he was getting a debut I assume he would've been told by now, and he hasn't rang me to tell me so.

So maybe they just want to use him as an emergency, or possibly a backup for finals?

That seems to be the view on the Match Preview thread - we will soon know.

So I thought given I have some time at work I'd do a little update on Dec.

After a slow start to the year due to some injuries, after a strong pre-season, Keilty has been in some decent form in the last 2-3 months. I think he's close to getting his debut but given the importance of the upcoming games he'll probably miss out again. Maybe if they choose to rest an OMac or someone for the Suns game he could come in but I don't know how the coaches are looking at him.

The knock on Keilty's game is he isn't a huge possession getter, but the majority of his touches are more often then not important. For example; on the weekend vs Footscray, in the last quarter we had just kicked a behind and the Dog's bombed it out from full back straight up the guts using the wind where it nearly reached half way. Keilty was in a 2v1 and stood up in front and pulled down a massive grab that even the Footscray supporters were cheering. If he hadn't won the contest there was a good chance the dogs could've used the massive bomb to get over the back which would have put them within 8 points in the last quarter, so I thought it was a big moment to help Casey win the game.

My personal worry is if he doesn't manage to crack into the team this season, given he was a late rookie pick, and even though he is playing good football and is still improving each game, he might find himself without a job at the end of the year, but I hope and wish the club give him his 3rd and final year on the Rookie list to give him the best chance to show he can be a good player for this great club..... but we will have to wait and see.

Thanks for the update, the possessions bit should be a worry, OMc doesn’t touch it often either.

Good luck Dec

Surely possession per se are not how one should judge a KP defender

I vaguely recall a game at the G where I think it was Danny Frawley who held some whizz band FF goalless and got BOG with, as I recall, a single possession.

I reckon he will get another rookie year. Big key defenders who can mark and kick ok don't grow on trees.

I can think of ten players I'd move on before Keilty. I'm more than happy to see him kept on for next year, even if he doesn't make his debut this year.

Thanks for the update Drunkn

He'll be 23 yo at the start of next season so he has youth on his side. From the reports, he seems to do the defensive things well. I am sure he is already, but if I was him I would work on speed, agility, and getting more involved in possession chains.  Perhaps as he feels more comfortable/experienced he can leave his man more when we win the ball?

Footy these days doesnt have too many one on ones so key backs have to be multiskilled

Just to put Dec's year into perspective (and maybe to try and convince myself he'll get another contract) I've gone through the BOG for the VFL the last couple of months and here is where Keilty got-

(Before Round 8 he was pretty quiet so I'll start from there)

RD8 1st
RD9 -
RD10 6th
RD11 Bye
RD12 Injured (Concussion)
RD13 1st
RD14 -
RD15 -
RD16 4th
RD17 Bye
RD18 5th
RD19 4th
RD20 3rd

I know I'm biased but someone in the AFL team getting in the best's in 7 out of 10 of his games would surely be holding his spot.... Let's just hope he gets at least 1 more year and a chance to Debut.

There’s the only one third year rookie thing, but Bull and Maynard upgraded and Keilty third year on the rookie list isn’t an unrealistic outcome. Fingers crossed for you all!

Not anymore actually, that got changed a couple of years ago. You can have any number of Rookies kept on for a third year.

Pretty well spot on. The only thing I'd like to correct is his ability to ruck. You are right in the sense he can't be a full time ruck but he has an incredible vertical jump that can match/beat most AFL players and the few times he has rucked against AFL listed ruck/forwards this year he has either held his ground or won.

His endurance is a bit on the average side and always has been and he definitely needs to work on it though

He does have an incredible vertical jump - and good hands at this stage of his career. These two qualities can only get better, more refined and more appropriately utilised, no doubt, as experience and good development take shape.

It is wise to remember that some of the very good - to - sublime markers and aerialists were not talls, did not run miles onfield, and had limited speed. They didn't even have Dec's physical involvement skills, either, yet proved to be dynamic forwards because of good coaching.

Two that come to mind:

  • Tony Modra, 188 cm, 93 kg
  • Warwick Capper, even shorter and much lighter

Good on the fella, but I don’t think there has ever been a much more underwhelming form line up forward for someone to debut with.

Heres hoping he can clunk a few and kick a few, but realistically I think after dropping Weideman they’d backed themselves in to a corner with Tim Smith now being injured.
