Ummm. Why the holy hell would we get rid of Jeff Garlett?!

He is 27 years old and kicked us 29 goals this year. Wasn't his best year but will be better for our inclusions and anothe year into the young blokes.

Gee chap you have hit the red a bit early today, that would mean a payout of 2 years money, don't forget the whinging on here after he re signed early this year, had the money in his pocket and gave up for the rest of the season. He, like everybody else, will be under pressure to perform

Surprised however, that after three days of the delisted free agency period, there have not been any signings announced as yet.

So many things are backwards in the AFL if afforded the opportunity to do so it makes much more sense to have the draft first and get the kids that you want in and then worry about delisted players to compliment your list. 

Often clubs should separate their list with mature players and kids not expected to play but if you unexpectedly draft 3 solid body ready to play midfielders in early rounds of the draft you wouldn't want to add someone like Jake Barrett. Similarly if you draft a highly ranked state league mature back flanker you might not add a delisted flanker like Henderson.

Didn't say we would get rid of him,  but if he had a bad year he would be looked at.  Dunn was dumped after one poor year.

I view Dunn a bit differently to Gartlett.

My read on Dunn is ( rightly or wrongly) the FD didn't think he had the ability to be offensive and "create". Gartlett has everything required to play the modern game - his problem last year was lapses in form.

Forward pocket is one of those positions where you can just get lost. The difference between Gartlett's first and second year is in his first year things went for him and when it didn't he made things happen. He didn't make things happen last season - I dont believe he worked hard enough.

Dunn couldn't recapture his good form previously, not at least until well into the season, the game evolved a bit and, by that time, Oscar showed enough to justify the investment into him for the remainder of the season. I feel sorry for Dunn because I like him. I think he'll play close to 22 games for the Pies next year.

Garlett is a gun - he's absolutely out of the box when he's in form. The game has not remotely passed him by, but he definitely needs to have a better season next year than he did last season. There are few similar players to him in the league when he's in the zone, has quick supply coming into the forward 50, and has some good tall timber around him. I'm hoping he recaptures his 2015 form, if only because I love watching the guy run amok in a red and blue guernsey.

Interesting opinion 'Bob', probably close to the mark. I would add work rate to contested ball as a major requirement.

He definitely needs to work harder against the good defenders to create that space for himself.

He's got the pace to do it so he will be interesting to watch in 2017.

Agree. At his best he is exciting and explosive,  but on his off days is terrible. The free flowing game is his catalyst, the lock down, his torment. Like everyone else, he needs to contribute. It doesn't just have to be goals, assists and defensive pressure are also valuable.

Garlett is like every other player on the list, Goodwin will have a role for him, if he plays it on a consistently good level or better, he will stay in the team

I disagree that the modern game doesn't allow space - although i will agree space does become more of a premium at finals time - this is because teams become so much defensive and less adventurous in my opinion.

Pushing up has becoming so aggressive in the modern game that you seeing more goals over the back than ever before. 

Whilst I agree that he needs to be more contested, Gartlett absolutely has the pace to capitalise on breaks out of defense over the oppositions "wall"

The only reason we'd upgrade one of them at this point is if we wanted more room for Cat B's.  We can only have three and we have an option on a young kid to take as our third if he makes it through the draft.  If we were looking at someone else to bring in then it could be worth upgrading Smith.  Otherwise the downside outweighs any benefit.   We'd be using more of the salary cap for no advantage since the upgrade rules are the same.

A bit a miss on this I think.

From what I understand, the AFL has several delisted FA periods, following the National draft, probably for the reasons you suggest.

Certainly agree finals v the right season are 2 different things and of course you have to win home and away games to get there in the first place. 

What I want to see with Garlett is consistent defensive pressure, him putting his body on the line and his skills being sharp around the ground. If he does that the goals look after themselves and even if he didn't get any goals in finals he'd contribute. His decision making and skills were off this year from early in the year, then his hardness and defensive efforts fell away. I hope it's just a slump and it comes back to him next year.

Yep I couldn't remember if they'd done that or not. It's a start, still, I'd rather delisted free agency go all the way until Feb. Where's the rush? Let clubs see which youngsters are progressing and who's fit over preseason.

So the paperwork for the first two delisted  free agents of the 2016 recruiting period has been lodged with the AFL and in the fashion typical of the times, they're not really DFAs in the strict sense.

Two of the 12 players who were allowed to join Essendon earlier this year in James Kelly and Matt Dea will continue with the club in 2017 as primary list players.

Not sure Andrew Demetriou circa 2005 would agree with you.

Teams super aggressively push up from defence now - in fact, attack seems to stem from defence more than ever before, and that's why turnovers are so deadly now. There's space everywhere on the quick counter.

That said, I kind of agree with your post. Garlett needs to recapture his 2015 form, a season in which his defensive pressure in the forward 50 quite often resulted in scoring opportunities for us. He's is a nightmare for opposition defenders when he's working hard without the ball.

NAB AFL delisted player free agency period (2) closes: Friday, November 18 

Is there some reason why you can't list a player on November 9?

The first two delisted free agents were taken before the end of DFA1 - Michael Barlow and Ricky Henderson join Gold Coast and Hawthorn respectively.

Neither of these selections is particularly surprising. Barlow's experience will help at the Suns who are going to collect a great deal of youth from the draft. The Hawks will probably get Henderson's career back on track after a poor season with the Crows.
