I think there may have been more than one mistake. He was dumped from being a vice captain to being left out of the leadership group altogether. When he was called up to the firsts he played lazy unaccountable football. So yeah the FD tought they would put games into Oscar (who really started to show some wares as a KPD as a result) and now Dunnys done.

Goodwin should take a leaf out of the Beveridge coaching manual and allow the players to play to their strengths. Dunn has far more ability than O. Mac and Frost. Pick 48 for him is a waste.

The same Beveridge who has only rarely played the slow and unathletic Will Minson in the ruck despite him being by far the Dogs best tap ruckman? Or who has routinely played barely 1 key defender and no lock down back pockets and backed his rebounding defenders to play a zone and attacked based system?

I like Dunny. I'd love to keep him as I think  he's fitter now than earlier in the year and with a big preseason could take his spot back from Frost or Oscar, and would at least be depth. But if we are lumped with Garland and we can get something from Dunn then I'd understand why moving him on is the right result.

I find it staggering that Fagan is in line for the Brisbane job. I know he's Head of Coaching at a triple premiership winner (and former Assistant Coach), but Head Coach is a very different kettle of fish.

I'm not a subscriber to the Hun but is Dunn contracted? If not surely he's an unrestricted FA. If he is contracted I would prefer we hold onto him, can't hurt to have some depth and when he comes in he does his job well.

Made one mistake?

When the coach asks all the players to come back in peak condition after their 8-week off-season break there are no exceptions. When given a chance to redeem himself he did SFA. Dunn has effectively cost the club 400,000 plus by his laziness. Has to be gone.

Dunn's 3 games prior to the St Kilda were of good quality.

I'd expect a 4th rounder or one of those of draft picks when we gain about 8 places in the third round.

I wonder if we could bundle him up with Dawes or Garland and see if we can get a second round pick out of them.

I was hoping we'd keep Dunn and trade out Garland, but if he's the one to go, best of luck Dunny.

It's an interesting one. 

Of course it's only VFL, but watching the game on the weekend I thought he looked as solid as I've ever seen. He played with super confidence, used the ball really well and was combative in the contest. He rarely made an error.

We've seen him produce that kind of footy only over the course of one year. (2013 or 14?). 

Unlike Garland, I still think that there's a spot for Dunn in our backline but only if he can produce his best footy consistently. We have nobody who can mind the bigger bodies and when his kicking and decision making is on song, it's a weapon.

Maybe his demotion to the VFL at this point in his career will be the kick he needs going into next year? Or maybe it won't and we'll see him traded?

It's difficult to know how much influence Roos had in making the calls to demote both Dunn and Garland for the majority of the year and I wonder whether Goody may give Dunn another chance. Like others, I think Garland's days are numbered. He is just that in between size player who doesn't have any real weapons and is incredibly inconsistent.

If Dunn has a ripper Grand Final on Saturday, it'll certainly make things interesting. 

 

There was an article some time back about Linden's life with his son as a single father in a shared custody arrangement.   I don't know what's transpired since but it's not necessarily a given that Lynden would be in a position to move to Brisbane.  Watching the prelim final was a timely reminder for all about what an elite kick Dunn is.  We don't have too many of them at the Dees and I for one would be keen to see him retained to perform a Michael Firrito type role for the next two or three years.

I don't think he is an elite kick in terms of accuracy, nor has he ever been. But the distance he can gain on a kick is definitely elite and once upon a time that was a valuable skill. But with the speed of the game now, it's not enough to bomb it long out of the back line as it'll rebound far quicker.

His kicking stands out at VFL level though. Having said all that, I was really hoping we'd hold onto Dunn and shift Garland, as Dunn does have more to offer IMO.

That is my take also.  He had 22 kicks and 2 handballs.  Big kicks are fine with the kick ins (there were 5) but the other 17 were field kicks; at least half were bombs to a pack or no one.  That isn't the way our backline functions now.  As you say, it is fast movement often using hand ball to get out and then let the ball carrier run with it. 

I think he had plenty of opportunities over the last 3 years to get fit and follow coaches instructions and the time to show he can/will play the coaches 'team first', fast-moving game style has passed.  And a change may be the best thing for him and his footy career.

Its always sad to see a long-term player go but if his pick helps us trade in a back up ruckman or ruck forward then it will be good for us. 

In fairness to Dunn, the "bombing long out of the backline" was often a product of having no-one to kick to. If you use Sunday's game as an example you can see that with mids who are prepared to work hard and spread, Dunn's long kicking to a target can be a very effective counter-attacking weapon.

No doubt he's behind the McDonalds on the pecking order but if one of them should go down, who do we have to bring in ? Dunn would be the first, if not only, cab off the rank. So at worst he's depth for a specific need. At best he could force his way back to being a first choice key defender.

He has a year to go on his contract and in an interview on SEN a couple of months ago he declared his intention of seeing it out & hopefully playing senior footy again. However if another club was to present a three year deal, he may think it's in his best interests to take it & request a trade. Particularly if he wanted to ensure his career extended beyond 2017.

I'm pretty sure we can get rid of everyone ranked 23 - 35 on our list, and not cause any problems. Right?

Oh wait, what if we have a few injuries and need to call on some experienced players?

Hmm, maybe we should hang on to guys like Dunn and Grimes so our fall back is not playing guys out of position or playing kids who aren't ready.

Seriously, I don't begrudge Dunn and Grimes leaving for greater opportunities, but as a club we need some depth in key positions. If Tommy Mac goes down in round 1, it would be nice to have Dunn in the wings. I don't think we should be pushing these blokes out the door just because they are not "the future".
