The convert from basketball surprised many at Casey with the way he adapted to the sport to the point where he is not far away from getting a game at the higher level.

Thought the same. He's only going to get better too

I was surprised by what I saw, young Joel looked like he'd player the game for years. I would expect to see a lot of him in Casey firsts next year, and while I don't expect him to be  quite at AFL standard by the end of the year, he could well be kicking the door down by season 2018.

Smith looks a real prospect from the handful of VFL games I have seen. He has very good breakaway speed and a great leap, which are valuable attributes in the modern game. He obviously needs to build up his body and work on his skills, but he could be a big surprise packet next year.

Those who have followed him: what role does he fill? Third tall or flanker etc?

Reads the game very well, great awareness, elite athleticism and an excellent mark. Considering his lack of recent familiarity with the game, I think this guys upside is enormous. Very excited.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him getting a few games in the AFL team by the end of 2017...

Preseason is going to be big for him this year.

I think he's a bit like Frost.  He has all the attributes, but it's just a question as to whether they can put it together with footy smarts.  I think 2017 will be developing and if all works out, then 2018 would be his year.  Does anyone know how long you can keep a Rookie B on your list before he counts as a rookie or before you have to up grade him to the senior list?

Not really a convert as such. Played footy right up to under 16s, which goes a long way to explaining his rapid improvement and his ability to read the game well. A terrific pick up

He provides a bit of a mix of Jeremy Howe and Jayden Hunt. He has more breakaway speed than Howe, but isn't as good a kick or mark. He isn't quite as quick as Hunt.

His athletic attributes are well suited to the modern game in that he can compete in the air and on the ground. The question mark is on his skills for mine.

Similar attributes to Easton Wood IMO.  Very smooth runner, really glides over the ground, huge leap too.  He also also a bit  taller than Easton Wood

Thanks hells bells

IF he turned out anything like Easton Wood, in particular a premiership player , we would all* be pretty happy.

* well, nearly all.  There are a few here who would still complain about something.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
