We are obviously miffed. The first time someone with credibility brought up the rumour, it was G. Wright on the Hawks website where he said there was an "enquiry" made about Lewis. Ultimately portraying it as if we actively went after Lewis. Mahoney and the gang are not only miffed the Hawks backflipped deal, but made it seem like we initiated it all. Then the "MFC people" Barrett referenced in the podcast, went on a spree to all news outlets making it abundantly clear that it was Lewis and his management that approached us, not us approaching Hawks, which their hierarchy would have preferred given the past week with Mitchell leaving. Wanted to save themselves from more criticism by not making it look like they were pushing out another of their premiership stars. Well done to Dees for not taking a backward step.

One thing I've always wanted to get a good handle on, which is impossible from the outside, is how much value there is in goodwill between clubs when it comes to trading.  If it's as I suspect, Hawthorn taking a dump in the very small AFL trading nest probably doesn't help them much either.

A mate of mine said it was the board who blocked the Lewis deal.

No idea how true, but he knows a ex hawks player (still plays afl) so might have some truth.

I actually agree with Damian Barrett for once. Dees need to push again for Lewis. Up the pressure on the Hawks.

They cannot afford Mitchell and OMeara and Vickery without cuts. Lewis to Melbourne makes sense.

I assume that means the Hawks board - they probably flipped yesterday when it hit the news and pulled the plug.

Clarkson may start to feel some heat from the media, fans and his club for the first time in his coaching career.

Matt Thompson on SEN this morning said we had offered a 3rd round pick and a 2 year deal to Lewis.

What the hell is Lewis going to do with a third-round pick?

I haven't had a go at the club since the Neeld days.  But if this got through, FFS, I would have burnt my membership.  If you are going to recruit a pensioner, at least recruit someone that would fix a deficit.  Boomer at least would break a line.  Lewis is slow and one paced. (Tyson, Vince, Jones, Salem.....we are a one-paced team already)  He would have done nothing to our need for speed and line-breakage.  Actually, Melksham doesn't really add to it either....and Hibbard aint quick.  I think those on the inside of our club are as delusional as those supporters that actually think we are close to teams like the Bulldogs and St.Kilda.  There is daylight between us in terms of speed.

Lumumba gets a rough deal from Collingwood supporters and many MFC supporters.  At least he tries to break a line.

Jordan Lewis.  FFS.

Snort.  I wondered the same thing.  Draft someone to do the actual playing in his stead?

I wouldnt say that until we see how they go next year. I, like most, hope this is the start of a long fall from grace for the Hawks but I dont want to gloat before it actually happens.

Yes, 'time will tell' with just about every post on Demonland!

In the meantime I'm happy to see the spotlight on the smug Hawks for a change, sit back and enjoy it. Popcorn time!  For too long the spotlight was on us for even the most trivial things.

It feels really good for us to be the dignified club, which didn't leak and even now has refrained from making any comment to anyone in the media while the mighty Hawks are scrambling and in 'damage control'...yes, very dignified by the Demons to say nothing even after the news broke!

I kind of feel we have been a bit stuffed over here. Do a load of work only to have the arrogant hawks flex their muscle at the last minute. They came to us and we wasted our time. This time could have been better spent on something a little more certain.Get your house in order dorks. I wouldn't mind hearing from Lewis now, not Graeme wright.

I still think this deal can happen, but am not confident it will.

Lewis at this point has not said he is staying, with all the talk you would think he would have if he wanted to stay. When he does that I think this is dead.

I think the best move Melbourne could make is to get them selves into a trade with GC that could include O'Meara to the Hawks. Get in the ear of GC, who we seem to have a good relationship with, and offer them something that they want that can be tied to the hawks trade then get GC to tell the Hawks that that is now part of the deal for O'Meara. If the Hawks would take a third rounder for Lewis as was reported then maybe it could be along the lines of:

Garland, Dunn or the like to GC from us,

O'Meara from GC to Hawks

a young mid or maybe late first/early second round pick from Hawks to GC

Lewis from Hawks to us.

So we get Lewis for Dunn/Garland (very good deal, may need to trow a pick in as well)

Hawks Get O'Meara for Lewis and a reasonably high pick/young player (good deal)

GC get Dunn/Garland and a reasonably high pick/young player for O'Meara. (may want another pick, maybe a future second round from us)

One thing I am happy about with this potential trade is that once again we didn't leak. There were clearly talks yet not one word from the club until the leak came from the Hawks.

Makes me wonder what else we are up to that we have no idea about!

Interesting to consider what deal would have gotten this done.  Someone on BF said the only reason Hawthorn pulled the plug on any deal was because Melbourne low-balled (and I believe that as much as I believe any of this), however I can't see then being in any position to get much for a 30 year old.  There's no doubt he's a very good player, but the MFC is not going to mortgage its future for a player who might only have a year or two remaining, when it's unlikely that we will be flag contenders during Lewis' stay here.  I'd have thought something like our third round pick, or upgrading their second round pick or something like that, but for them that's essentially scrap value for the player who came second in their B&F.  I can't see the MFC coming at anything more for a short term prospect.

They must be bloody desperate for salary cap relief if this is the path they have taken.  Damn shame he's not a FA!

Nothing mate, Mahoney is just scratching his arse and arguing with Essendon about which year's second round pick we'll give for Hibberd.  That's what olisik said (38 times) anyway, so it must be true.

Dunn and Garland will never play another game for the Demons so they may as well be bundled up and used as trade bait.

Lewis is still a very good player but he is slow and not the type of player we need IMO. He is very similar to Dom Tyson and I feel our other inside players are not quick enough to compensate for the lack of pace we would have from playing both Tyson and Lewis. Personally, I think Michael Barlow is a better option if we go down this track, as he is slightly younger and would not command the same salary as Lewis. I also think Barlow is slightly quicker than Lewis and better defensively.

I agree to some extend about getting GC involved the only problem is they said they want a ready made midfielder not a defender.

They could ask for that from the Hawks, one of their young mids. Any player from us is a bonus.

Lewis is coming for his experience, he fills a different hole to the pace hole we have. I am not convinced Barlow fills the experience hole well enough for him to be both the pace and experience.

If we can pick up Lewis, Hibberd and still keep our pick 28 for the draft, great result. Even though he'd be a nice addition, we don't need Rockliff. We need Lewis because we severely lack on field experience and maturity. A guy like him would do wonders for the development of Oliver, Brayshaw, Harmes, Truck, Stretch, Tyson etc.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
