Harriet Cordner has joined the Dees Women's team as a 'B' Rookie http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-10-05/cordner-continues-tradition

She will be the 8th Cordner to play for Melbourne.  Her grandfather Don Cordner won a Brownlow and Captained the club.  Two Cordners are in our Team of the Century.

While I'm sneaking in Women's league news, Daisy won the Woman of the Year award, a sort of Brownlow :  http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-09-29/pearce-named-football-woman-of-the-year

Oh and some new assistant coaches were appointed.  http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-10-04/assistants-named-for-womens-team

Apologies for gate crashing the main Forum but not many people venture over to the Women's League Forum and I thought these stories were to good to miss especially the Harriet Cordner one.  May she have as distinguished a footy career as her ancestors!

Unless I am mistaken, her father was in the All-Australian team (for the amateurs)!

Apology accepted but at some stage this thread will have to be moved across go the Women's League Forum because if we keep it in this section the other forum will never take off.

No.

David Cordner's father was Ted Cordner, brother of Don, John and Dennis who all played for the Demons. Ted was a member of Melbourne's 1941 premiership team.

Another member of the family played in a Demonland/Demonology Interforum team that I coached a few years ago. He was quite a good player but alas and apologies, I forget his first name.

The Cordner family legend goes all the way back to 1905 when Ted Senior played a couple of games for Melbourne before joining the University club. He also had a brother and cousins who played for the club.

I get the impression that the Cordner family is quite extensive. I taught with Richard Cordner some years ago. When I asked him if he was related to David he said he thought he might be a second cousin.

I might ask Ian Cordner tomorrow if Harriet is his daughter? If so, she has good genes.

She certainly appears to have his height!

Jack...I'd love to know whether the Cordnerwho played in the inter forum game was Ian or Chris, both of whom played with distinction for Melb Uni and the Victorian amateurs.

Perhaps it was Rhodes scholar Chris, who is a keen Demon follower and contributor to newspaper articles. I'd be interested  to know if they are  Demonlanders. Perhaps they're reading this!

Anything happening on this?

Though I do notice that posting over there brings the thread into the main threads list on the front page here anyway, so I wonder what purpose a separate forum serves?

As to Ms Cordner's family resemblance, I wanted to post a 'peas from the same pod' reference over there, based on memory of photos seen, but I caught myself up in a miasma of pc doubt. Thanks for your post, Bobby; I'll feel a little more free now!

What does this even mean? PC doubt for mentioning family resemblance?

I've heard that Ted Junior,(David's Dad), would probably have won the Brownlow Medal in (?) 1944 or 45, if the award  hadn't been suspended during the later war years.

He was busy finishing his Med Degree, and playing top grade footy as well, and apparently had a great season about then.

He was a highly respected physician at the Alfred Hospital, as well  a modest and likeable fellow.

By the way.....how many Demonlanders know this?

Don Cordner was a GP in Eltham. Part of his job was delivering babies in that area. One of his deliveries was Jack Grimes' Dad(?Mum), from Hurstbridge. That made them Demons supporters. How I wish Neeld didn't wreck Jack's career by making him captain too soon.

I just hope Jack supports the Dees forever. He got his 100 games, so hopefully he'll sire 5 or 6 sons who want to be Demons(but I wouldn't blame him if he directed them elsewhere.)

No; for referring in any way to the 'looks' of the women players, deano.

And, like I said, I'm now in a more confident position.

I think "Rollo" was the poster with the Cordner ancestry from memory.

I was water boy for one match and had a chat.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

    TRAINING: Wednesday 5th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
