Yep, gotta agree with you Redleg. The last 2 rounds (when we were still a chance of making finals) left a very bad taste in my mouth. Hopefully it has done the same with the playing group.

Looks like we are pursuing the youth policy, which isn't a bad thing, leadership and experience will evolve.

 

I expect Goody to play his cards just as close to his chest as Roosy did. I read his reiteration that we're looking at the draft as a hint that we're looking at all options. Draft, trade everything. The way some people seem to take AFL professionals on their word is astoundingly naive. True to his word to who? The journalists? I wouldn't want him to be transparent in the media. I want him to act in the best interests of my club and that means not letting on anything.

Ryan Griffen is just a player now, nothing special and the Dogs young mids stepped up without him. Sure they could've held on to a pick and taken a cheaper young key forward ie. Peter Wright but I think Boyd isn't any worse. Yeah the contract limits what else they can do but assuming he comes good as a decent key forward and the contract is front loaded then in 2-3 years he'll probably be on a fairer contract. 800k a year for a decent young key forward will be the going rate and he could be on that by then.

Suckling has faults but he's around the mark as a bottom 6 guy in a top team and he was a free agent. If you have to pay a bit of extra cash to get him but can keep your draft picks then that's a win. I'd rather pay Suckling extra money and sign him for free than pay Hibberd good money and have to cough up a valuable pick. 

If we get a little more successful over the next year or two I'd love to sign a free agent of similar ability to Suckling to give us a bit more depth and keep draft picks. You can trade out players who aren't getting games and continue the cycle of getting in the draft or save a few picks to combine for a needs based trade.

Please don't tell me you consider NJones or Vincent as leaders. 

Imo we have zero true leaders.

The next gen will be best served with leaders guiding them to maximise their potential. 

Not on our list, but imagine our youngsters with Danger, Mitchell or Roo leading them. Brilliant. 

That's what I want Goodwin to achieve.

I'd take that statement as reasonably honest, but all it really means to me is that they won't be making 4 trades and signing 4 delisted players as free agents or rookies.

Given the strength of our list is 18-23 year olds we aren't going to start topping up all over the place and not give our recruiters a crack at some fresh talent.

Listening to Goodwin I get the impression that the priority will be moving up the draft order. We have seen some creative trading over the past few years and I expect more of the same this year.

If we could have beaten Carlton, we would have had a good last week into the Cats game. We would have been then more competitive. Probably still have lost, but not that thrashing.

The Carlton game led to the thrashing and a bitter end to the year.

You want an experienced player who'd be clearly best 22 for 1-2 years and then move into a coaching role there is one person who'd be even better than Thompson, Dal Santo and Harvey and that's Matty Boyd

All Australian this year, great leader would give us great experience and leadership down back where we desperatey need it 

if the Bulldogs can't get a deal done with him i would love to see us make a phone call.

The Dogs were in the market for Hurley until he resigned. How do you figure they don't have salary cap room? There is a big difference between choosing to use your full cap, or choosing to use a nominal cap and leaving room for a "big fish".

I don't really rate Suckling, but he cost them nothing. Compare that to the opportunity cost of us going after Lumumba, Hibberd and Melksham, who I similarly don't rate.

Anyway most of this is not new news but this is what I know from what I would say is quite a reliable source within the club. 

Barlow - Dee's are right into him and all going well he will end up in the red and blue next year. 

Hibberd - Will be a dee next year. 

Scott Thompson - Goodwin very keen. Dee's are waiting for crows to finish finals. Peter Jackson loves the idea of succession planning and Thompson could be part of this.

Vardy - Dee's are into him.  Waiting for cats to finish finals.  Could end up at WCE.  

Prestia - Dee's never really in the running due having no first round pick this year.  We were also never going to match Richmonds contract offer which will apparently make him one of Richmonds top 4 or 5 players. 

Vickery - Personally I was keen on him.  Club was not so I'm told.

Hogan - Was told that the club is not yet pushing to hard with Jesse due to family issues (personally I'm not sure what they are). Club will meet with him at end of September to discuss his intentions moving forward and a new contract.  My source says his intentions are anyone's guess ATM.

I also asked about Wells, Mitchell and O'Mera.  He said every club has enquired about these three.  We were never a chance with O'Mera, Wells maybe a chance.  Hartlett is apparently on massive $$ so unless port can come to a deal where they pay part of his contract he won't be going anywhere.  Dee's not too keen.

He said this time of year every club is enquiring about every player.  Melbourne have enough kids and young talent right now so additions of Melksham, Hibberd and Lumumba (basically a new recruit) next year and maybe even Barlow will provide some more experience and hopefully consistency.  He also said we were blessed with injuries this year so we will be looking at keeping depth players.

As for the Dee's proactively trading away some of our young top talent it's not going to happen as we are trying to get create a dynasty.  

He laughed about Norths and Richmonds recruiting strategy. North will lose over 2000 games experience this year and have bugger all young talent.  As for Richmond we all know they think that there one player away from a premiership.  He also said Carlton might as well change their name from the Blues to the Giants as Silvagni is into all their fringe players (picking up the scraps so I'm told).  Was also told the Dee's players enjoy beating Richmond more than any other side which surprises me.  I thought it would be Collingwood.

Anyway most of the above is not new news to everyone.  It's basically what I have been told by a mate within the club.  Like everyone here I wish Hogan would sign a long term agreement and hopefully the club should know more within the next few weeks.

Hogan - Your source's assessment of the Hogan situation is the most credible I've read on here.

Nice work mate.  There was a poster a while back claiming Barlow would be with us next year. Interesting.

I reckon we will push hard to swap a Future 2nd rounder for Hibberd and keep 26... in fact I know that's what the Dees will offer, remains to be seen if Ess want that or this years. Hopefully our next year's 2nd pick is high 30's!

Barlow was playing career best footy after his spell in the WAFL. He had 40 touches and 2 goals in their narrow win over Port Adel and was the clear difference.

Whom out of Jones, Tyson, Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw would you leave out for him? Not to mention Vince has to find a spot somewhere and is better on ball than on a wing or half back. 

I'd only see Barlow as depth and culture guy. Which is fine, we need some depth and leadership, but I'll be shocked and disappointed if he played 20 games, even more than an about 10 would have me concerned.

You ever know with injuries etc.

This is my concern, you add in Thompson and Barlow potentially and it's two young kids potentially missing spots, and Barlow would really be on the fringe of best 22. 

I don't think Barlow will happen as we have nothing to trade for him unless they want Dawes or Dunn

That's what I want Goodwin to achieve. 

You want him to trade for an A grader or legend from another club? Good luck.

Nathan Jones isn't Riewoldt or Hodge but he's not a scrub either. He's evolved in his leadership and has a crack every week. Vince did the same in the midfield. The half back line has been a bit of a challenge for him but he did well for half a year, not sure if it was injury or form that got him at the end. Daniel Cross did a role for us for 2 years and is still at the club. 1 of someone like a Barlow, Thompson or Dal Santo could be useful but it's unlikely we are going to get an on field general. More just a steady head and voice in the playing group.

Viney and Gawn will take responsibility to lead this group like Ward and Davis have done at GWS. Jones, Vince, Trengove, Hibberd maybe if he got sorted out Lumumba, whomever else we have around will only be supporting Viney and Gawn once they take over more responsibility in due course ie. not too soon! Heath Shaw, Mumford, Patfull have done the same at GWS and none of them are super leaders, all have their own faults.

Eventually Tyson, Brayshaw, Tommy Mc and so on can hopefully come through the ranks like Coniglio, Shiel whomever else the Giants have as emerging leaders.
