I'm quite disappointed for Jack.

His career was the plaything of decisions made by people who should have known better. From making him captain after 37 games to giving him the number 31 jumper to playing him in the midfield, the poor kid was like Sisyphus; constantly rolling a boulder up a hill. 

For those who are saying that Nate Jones should hand the captaincy over from next year to Jack Viney, I give you exhibit A (and that isn't a sleight on Grimesy). 

Well, we always knew these three were on the chopping block.  I'm glad we got Grimes to his 100th at least.  Now we just need to hope we get some good pace and disposal into the club in their place.  In particular the disposal, which is something all three lacked.

Not withstanding being inhibited by all of the club's woes I reckon Grimes was also a victim of a changing game.

Early in his career he was rock solid across half-back where he was strong overhead, read the play well and played within his limitations.  One felt comfortable when he had the ball in hand and he was a reliable general. But as the game has evolved the back-line has become the generator for attack.  Speed and bold ball-movement by foot and hand has become the backman's weapon.  It doesn't suit Jack's slow and steady play.  Jack was dependable and reliable but struggled to adapt to a more attacking game.  As his comfort zone changed his foot skills and decision making were increasingly challenged and put under the microscope.  It never suited his game.

One of the few players I'll remember very fondly.

Also he's RFA so it clearly signals we wont match and that makes it easier to field offers.

Which leaves guys like; Dunn, Michie, Garland and JKH up for possible trades come trade week.

Will be interesting to see what happens with these 4.

Wonder if we will trade Dunn to Bris for their second rounder, then offload that second rounder to the Dons for Hibberd.
Send off Garland and Michie for 3rd-4th round picks...I don't know.
And sent JKH off to Carlton for their second round.

I don't really know, I am hoping that other clubs pay over a little for our guys and see value in them that we don't quite see.

This will be the most interesting trade period of recent years for me due to the fact that we really don't have to hold on to any of the old 2010-2014 players for depth anymore.

As I said man, I really don't know, and I am hoping that other clubs see more value for these guys thank we do.

I suspect that's absolutely what it is and another side doesn't want to see their compensation pick take a hit if by some miracle he did warrent a late pick.

Pretty much agree with all of the above.  However I'd have no issue with moving both Dunn & Garland on.

Pedersen in the gun also.

No surprises with Grimes, but it still gives me a stab of grief now that it's official. A player who gave his all the MFC during the toughest of times. I hope the note he leaves on is not too sour and he can continue to be a Melbourne man after footy.

Feel gutted for Grimes but not surprised.

I had thought Jones would've received a one year extension. Would be interesting to know which mids the club's identified in the draft (national and rookie) and in the trade period.

 

I take comfort from the fact Grimes knew it was coming and wasn't blindsided like i think some of the North guys were to an extent, but even though i think it's the right call, i doubt many Dees supporters weren't hoping he could find something and hang around, just because of the loyalty he's shown through such a hard time

if he doesn't get on a list, I'd love to see him signed on a development coach or at least to help with training and standards.  no-one did more to get the most out of themselves

As disappointed as I am that Grimes has been booted, I will feel ten times worse if any of Newton, Dawes, Lumumba, Michie, White, and King are still on the list by the end of October.

I'd like to think the club knows what it is doing, but these are the same people that gave Terlich a two year contract and then refused to play him, when most people wanted to delist him.

100 games, Captain and life member of the club you grew up supporting giving everything you had, Grimes can leave with his head held high. Stuff of dreams for all of us.

Unless Lumumba retires, then I'd be shocked if he isn't there next year.

White had a very good year in the VFL and is still very young with plenty of upside.  Again I expect him to get a 3rd rookie year.

The club hasn't used the word "delisted". That's been used here and I assume by the media. What the club said was that there were list changes and that the three players were not being offered new contracts. I'm not sure what else the club can say or do to make it any more dignified.

After Grimes hurt his foot and missed  most of 2011 he was never the same player. His development was stalled and frustrating to watch afterwards.

With the news yesterday it means there are now only 13 players on the list who were at the club during the last Neeld year. 

They are:

7. C. Garland
8. C. Pedersen
9. T. McDonald
10. D. Kent
11. M. Gawn

Those in bold have without question improved their games during the Roos years and are best 22, the others have been struggling with injury, have seen the game gone past them, or remain required depth. 

That means 7 of our 2016 best 22 were at the club in 2013. Puts into perspective what Roos had to work with and the changes he has made to this club. 

I dare say by the end of the trade period this year a couple more of these players may well be off the list as it wouldn't surprise me if Dawes isn't around next year due to ongoing injuries and Dunn may seek a trade, who knows. By the end of next year this list may be down to not much more that the players in bold. 

I do feel bad for Grimes and thank him from the bottom of my heart for his unwavering service to this club.

What about Hogan? I would have thought that 8 of our best 22 remaining would be pretty standard turnover for clubs that don't make the finals over 3 years. I'd also argue that Roos thought the Garland was best 22 when he gave him a 3 year contract last year.
