POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 21

Demonland

Recommended Posts

First half was good but not the great half the score may look like. Port were pretty insipid. They botched a heap of chances and we did too. Garlett and Pedda both ran in to open points. The ball movement through the middle of the half was great though and for the backline to keep structure against a potentially slick moving Port was impressive.

Disappointed with the 3rd quarter. A solid 10 minute patch after half time would've iced the game, instead we were flat after half time for about the 80th time in a row. A major weakness we haven't fixed.

Also we let Robbie Gray and Pittard get on top and they are the 2 damaging Port players. Viney should've thrown off his tag by going to Gray and someone needed to put some time defensively in to Pittard. I love Dean Kent and the way his aggressive leading and run has massively improved our forward line but he's still shaky defensively on clever quick types who can turn him or break his tackles. Vanders or Brayshaw had to be moved on to Pittard and the whole team had to sort out the poor kicking in the 3rd.

The 4th was a pleasant turn around and it was only bad kicking for goal that stopped a nice blow out quarter.

An important win to keep finals alive, get 3 in a row and notch an away win, but just a so so performance overall if we are fair dinkum and there's a lot to work on to make sure we are focused defensively for full games and to get our skills up to a decent standard.

If Carlton bounce back hard next week we'll need to play better to get the win we want.

Our defense was excellent. Thought both McDonald's, Jetta and Hunt played great games.

Agreed. Our defence was terrific and it helped that we smashed them in stoppage clearances.

Also, another stat I'm loving lately that has been down for many years and is so important in modern footy: bounces. We had 13 to Port's 7.

Finally, I loved how well coached/planned we were this week. We were very cognisant of the third man up against Max in the first half, so someone would constantly prevent the third man up from Port at most stoppages. Bugg did it a bit. So did Oliver. Well done, coaches.

I think this will work

but i have had a few Gin & Tonics at The Marine Bar in Lamai Koh Samui so go easy!! :)

To make the eight...

Melb beats
Carlton 20points
Geelong 1 points

North lose to
Syd 30
Giants 9

Just beat Carlton by 10 goals and as long as the Kangas lose their games our fate should be in our own hands.

And yet again, Tyson was outstanding. A few weeks ago, 'Joeboy' called him the most overrated player he's ever seen in a Melbourne jumper.

Well well. Tyson is a star.

One of my favourites. Just gets the job done every week. And he's back to kicking goals. Looking forward to a big 2017 from him. Coniglio started the season on 60-odd games. Viney and Tyson will be starting 2017 on a similar total. Hoping for big things from them both next year, plus natural improvement from Oliver, Petracca and Brayshaw.

For the record, Tyson is averaging 25.1 possessions for 2016 at 73% DE for an inside mid. One thing I noticed tonight though was he got a bit of ball on the outside, so I'm sure the coaches are pushing that from him and would be really happy with his progress this year. Really started to add a bit of an outside game.

Horrible to watch for the middle 2 quarters but solid win in the end. Strong finish even with the poor kicking for goal.

Not sure whether they were just terrible or we were good - but honestly both teams were just plain sloppy for most of it.

Jones came back into the game strongly, Tyson continued his consistent form.  I thought we were pretty even across the board.  Hogan, Vanders and Harmes were probably the only ones who didn't contribute much.

I'm not an Omac fan but he played pretty well tonight, turned it over a couple of times but his positioning and run was quite good. Looked more assured.

Tom Mac was clean and confident.

I thought Brayshaw was also important in that first half, looked a bit better tonight.

Brayshaw has looked like a star in patches since coming back from injury. He can't run out games yet, but look out for him 2017. Will be a gun. Such a good user and decision maker. I knew he'd kick that one on his left and was surprised when he missed the second one on his left.

I feel like making a gif of every Oliver possession, he's a magician.

When will Neville Jetta get his due recognition? He's pretty much a mini-Rance for us, with better disposal.

Max brilliant again.

Not his best game but how many players can kick goals from that pocket? Watts made it look easy.

Hogan has probably shot himself in the foot with the stalled contract negotiations. His value was higher last year. Bad luck buddy.

Jetta is the man down back. played a brilliant game

No, I didn't mind them getting one, or three for that matter, but when they got 4 unanswered goals, with us missing 4 sitters, coming up to 3/4 time ... yeah, maybe a few of us did think we looked like throwing it away. If they'd had a bench, who knows?

That we managed to hang on while still playing lousy was good. That was winning the way Hawthorn win. Would be good to one day take the chance to really smash a side near us on the ladder, though.

Next year, mate! Part of the natural development of a younger side. Learning to really bury sides. We'll get there.

Billy Stretch is an unheralded decision maker and skill executor. The boy runs in straight lines - i love him!

Yep. A terrific decision maker. His run and decision making is becoming really important. He's not as penetrating with his kicking, but there's a bit of Isaac Smith about him IMO.

Was never wise to write off a 19 year old KPD in just his second season with less than 20 games under his belt.  Kid will be a player and a half.

I'll say it again - he will be our Rance. He already gets a massive amount of ball compared to other defenders, and does a lot of good with it.

And he's got all the tools. He just needs strength & bulk, and to eliminate the occasional brain-fade. But they will come.

Massive win, 40 points in Adelaide with not huge input from Viney, Watts, Hogan and Petracca.  Great signs.

What it probably also shows is that Goodwin's game plan still involves disciplined two-way-running defence. Our defenders were terrific for the most part tonight. It's certainly getting easier for them when our midfield and forwards bring the pressure.

How's this for an incredible stat? Our two KPFs did not lay a single tackle. Hogan had doughnuts again, as did Pedersen. Imagine if he had the tackling pressure of Darling. That's where he needs to get better. And will.

None for Pedo is surprising, but at least he did that crushing bump. As for Hogan I've become pretty used to it, did not notice much pressure from him tonight

Yeah, it's a real weakness in his game, but to be fair to him tonight, he certainly laid a tackle, but the Port player managed to get a rushed disposal away, so it wasn't counted.

Great win, not a great game though.

I remember back in the day, after yet another Melbourne thrashing, going across to our opponent's Board (Hawthorn, Swans, North ... whoever) and see everyone complaining about how badly they'd played, and dreaming of the day when we could [censored] about how badly we played, but still come away with a win. Especially, remembering that this was Port at home, and they had as much to play for as us (finals etc.).

Wonder if Ollie Wines had a teensy twinge of regret? Not sure of the way forward for Port. Demons on the other hand ... and we've still got Salem, Weiderman etc. etc. waiting in the wings.

Wines re-signed last year, yeah? There's still a chance he could become a Demon one day. :P His disposal is a bit average for mine, but he's a bull no doubt.

Our young midfield who should be about fragged by this stage, seem to be just getting going. Brayshaw, Oliver and Stretch are now a genuinely capable second string to Viney, Jones and Tyson.

Lots of credit to the box for the resting policy, you'd think. Our young players are coming home with a rush.

Agree. We can also improve the line up this week by bringing in Salem for Harmes. Salem seems to have been forgotten this year, but at his best is one of our half dozen young guns who will play be an important part of our bright future. Oh yes, he needs to play on the ball, either wing or half forward.

Lets do it Dees. Great win today under difficult circumstances. I found it interesting  that the summing up by the commentators at the end included:

"the demons today have put themselves in a position where it is now possible they will make the eight, and if the do none of the other seven sides will want to play them. On this form, they play like a top four side" (or words to that effect).

It is a very long time since we have had that said about us.

I know I'm only new here but some of you people properly need psychological help. We beat port in Adelaide by 40 points. And you still find s**t to complain about? Just enjoy it!? I'd let it annoy me but I know there's nothing I can do to fix those people. They'd probably complain about having to drink warm water if they were stuck in the desert.

But seriously... how about us!!?? Ive suffered through supporting this team for much of my life because I knew how much sweeter it would make it when we started winning. It's like doing fifty star jumps in a ski jacket on a 45 degree day just to make jumping in the ocean feel even better. And jeeeeeez does that water feel nice.

1. its now round 22 and we can still make finals.
2. No one is talking "re-build" or looking towards the trade/draft week.
3. Ask any of our players...I bet they don't want the season to end, they look like they want to play another 22 rounds.

How good is this?!

When you put it this way it really hits home that we are a proper footy team again...  I just realised I dont know the name of one kid in the coming draft.  Usually I am studying all the prospects by round 8 as our seasons normally over by then.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
