Roos three years at the club i think will prove to be the most significant in the clubs recent history.

He's taken a list void of talent and a club on it's knees to a club loaded with top end talent with one of the brightest futures and in finals contention with long term on and off field stability looking very likely within three season.

there have been some fantastic coaches at this club, But what Roosy has done could be the most significant 3 year period any coach has spent at any club in AFL history in terms of what he's achieved.

Agree but you would have to say Roos set the foundations 

Dead heat for the rev and swooper. Both had to overcome having substandard facilities - a situation that just had to be a factor in neither being able to create a truly top side. 

Just on swooper - why did he get sacked in 92? Seems a bit harsh given it was our first year out of the finals in 5.

For those old enough to remember. Ron Barassi clearly laid the foundation for Swooper Northey to come in and be successful. Very similar scenario to right now. He inherited a basket case. Went backwards to go forwards & jaded over a very different model to Swooper.  Roos to Goodwin is very similar in my opinion. We will have a red hot shot at a flag within the next 3 years. It will be all about luck and taking our opportunity when it arrives. Good times are almost within touching distance. It's our destiny and we are due.......

Considering what Roos walked into i would say he has been the most important since Smithy.  

Swooper was a legend but he was also lucky to inherit RDB's hard work

Danners was fantastic but we were to Flaky in his term

2005 after Round 18 Top of the ladder...Didn't win another game...

Balme was just so unlucky with injuries...

Tiger Ridley was great but Greg Parke couldn't kick!!!

The question should be, is he the most important coach we've had? I think yes. 

He has set us up for success when we were on the verge of irreparable failure. 

I don't think anybody could have save us from the hell left behind by our previous administration like Roos has

As Ronald Dale set the foundations for Northey. Here's to Goodwin going one better

• No. Surely it's Johnny Northey.

Like some other posters I compare what Roos has done to what Barass did prior to John Northey taking over.  Laying foundations.  In interviews Robbie Flower always gives some credit to Barass for the success of the sides 87-1991.  Sadly we didn't have a few out and out champions who could lead us to that elusive flag in that time.

From memory, swooper walked out as the committee asked him to re-apply for his job or something  at the end of 1992.

To answer the question, I think it's between Northey and Daniher.  I actually feel Daniher had a more talented list at our peak in 2000, and Northery did more with what he had.  Swooper for mine.

Roos knows how to build a list that will taste success for a long period of time.

Yes.

Even if some may argue that he's not been our 'best' coach, I think it's hard to argue that he's not been our most 'important' coach since Norm Smith given the circumstances in which he came to the club, what he was briefed to achieve, and what he has actually achieved in terms of culture, stability, the personnel that he has brought in etc.

Roos has turned around this club quite incredibly. We were an absolute basket case when he came in, and in no time at all he's transformed the club such that we now have an exciting young list, an elite coaching group, and, most importantly, genuine HOPE for the future. I love the bloke.

Danners, took an aging side from Bottom into a Prelim and went close to pinching the 98' flag.  He had massive turnover over good senior players but kept us playing finals until his last year.

Barassi set us up for the Northey years - Roos for the Goodwin era . 

If we get a flag soon we know Roos was the architect. Im hopefull that the boys pull out all the stops for the remainder of this year the last time under Roosy . 

Northey and Daniher are both miles ahead of Roos, and even Balme in 1994 had a super team before injuries destroyed the team over the next three seasons.

Roos can't be considered in the same company because his match day coaching is so average.

Roos has done the job that was asked of him. He's had a central role in giving us our footy club back. Not overly fussed as to where that places him in the rankings. It's comparing apples with oranges in some respects.

Swooper installed a "Us against the world" game plan.....We did not have the big stars of other teams but a team that would never give up.

Danners had more of a game plan for the modern game but seemed to change it every year hence our "Good year...Bad year...progress.

Roos has had to rebuild from virtually scratch and now has the makings of a very good side

I find it impossible to compare them due to all the different circumstances.
