Who are the Dees chasing for 2017 and at what cost?

The best mid outside the Giants super-mid group is Jake Barrett. Offer the Giants a deal with picks swapped ... Mfc 3rd rd 46 & 4th rd 64 for Barrett and Giants pick 53.  They need the picks to get academy currency.

Didn't they just close this loophole or did I interpret this incorrectly?

Sort of, considering GWS need to trim their list its unlikely a trade like this would eventuate. You need to have available lists spots for each pick now in order to keep a later pick or it is forfeited prior to the draft.

Does this thread include coaches we may be chasing?

Brenton Sanderson is said to be on the radar of several clubs as an Assistant Coach.  Collingwood are the front runners (great mates with Buckley) and we are also interested.

Sandeson worked with Macca at Geelong so is a known quantity to our coaching panel and I would be very happy to see them reunited at the Dees.

They did, but I think GWS can loophole the loophole by trading this years picks for future picks.

Sanderson would be a great get...

Gotta look at the Giants, we have a great trading relationship with them and they have some really good young talent that hasn't been able to get on the park

players like Ahearn and Picket were top 10 super talented picks but have been constantly injured and might be worth looking at ( i haven't been following them so not sure how good they are these days) but both were guns in the under age comp

Abe completely agree. Injuries have hurt these boys and they have what we need - speed and kicking skills. Both are coming back from injuries this year. Pickett showed a little in his first year in the NEAFL and then did his foot in round 5. Will be back for pre-season. Ahern did his ACL but all good now and ready for the pre-season, he didnt play this season but was good last season in patches. Generally was either BOG or drifted in and out of games having a big impact then disappearing. Both can play on a wing or half forward.

Would love to see them both in the Red and Blue and first rounder next year plus maybe 3rd this year should do it considering that they wont be able to keep them in a few years anyway due to their list overload with more Academy talent (so tough being them).

Also, they were taken with pick 4 and 7 after Trac and Brayshaw. Ahern was a clearance king in the championships alongside his partners in crime (no prizes for guessing who those 2 young men were at Vic Metro) and found his way onto the AA centreline which read Ahern Petracca Stretch, Pickett was good in a very average WA side who only won 1 game in the championships.

I think there is more upside in these boys than there is Hoskin-Elliot and Tomlinson and getting both of them addresses our needs (wings, speed, foot skills, goal kicking) rather than the other two.

We don't need to give up the park for players. Many of our youngsters will take the next step in 2017

Been saying it for ages Abe so totally agree

The only reason we look at Essendon (Note Nobody else is) is Goodwin looking after mates or he has a special relationship

I say leave Essendon alone and look elsewhere

I like the optomism and I agree with you to a point, but richmond has been saying that for the past 4 years... someone or possibly more than one will take a step backwards or stagnate next year.

I'm always surprised that it seems every player that comes onto (or is speculated to be ) the market seems to be either instantly dismissed as coming to us or we aren't even in the conversation. While we don't seem to have much currency, with no first round pick, surely we've got a fair wack of salary cap space.

From what I understand around 3/4 of milkshakes contract this year had to be paid by Essendrug, so I hope that's been front ended into some recently signed player - T & OMac, plus I think Jonesy and Viney are signed on unders (not massively but still less than open market). Plus with Dawes, Grimes and potentially Lumumba going, they'd all be in the top 10 paid players at present (assuming Grimes's last deal came when he was captain so would have been better paid than most think).

Combined at a guess that could free up around $1.7mil from the current cap, I know Hogan if siging will take a fair pay increase, and we'll have to save some to increase those coming out of contract next year, but the cap is also increasing in the new rights deal.

Price wise I think we should be in the conversation for O'Meara, Prestia, Mitchell amongst others - of course if we want them is another matter, but either we are too quickly being dismissed or our recruiting guys are pretty good at playing their cards close.

For what it's worth I would be having a red hot crack at Kurt Tippet. Would solve a lot of our forward ruck dilemas

The 29 year old that can't get on the park? :P He's also on close to a mill and hails from Sydney. He's home and playing in a finals contender right now. No chance I'm afraid. But he is the sort we'd look at.

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I don't think we'll be major players in the trade period outside of getting Hibberd.  Without a first round pick this year, and a feeling that we won't trade next years as it would have us out of the first round two years in a row, I don't think we can compete with other clubs for the likes of O'Meara, Prestia or Mitchell.  I can't see the club trading away one of our future stars to get one, and our fringe players aren't going to get the job done either.  The likes of Carlton, Richmond, St. Kilda and Essendon will all have a first round pick and it sounds like all of them are happy to trade them away.

Again, this isn't a bad thing.  If or when we get the Hibberd deal done I can see us sticking with the picks we have, or moving on players like Grimes and Dawes for later picks, and not doing much else.  I think the club will back our youngsters in for improvements over the off-season and into 2017.

I agree WB,

I think other than Hibberd, we might get involved in a three way trade as a circuit breaker, but I am thinking we'll be pretty quiet unless someone approaches us with a offer too crazy to refuse.

Jason Taylor to show his worth by having a draft without any picks at the top of the draft...

We need to bring in some youth. Case closed. Any one can see that we are lacking the spark and passion of youth. I would hope we trade out some of our fringe for draft picks. I am duck to death of bringing in other teams sloppy seconds. Have we no dignity.

What are you on about?

We have been putting out one of the youngest sides of the comp each week. If its one thing we seriously need its experience and leadership.

Youth is by far the least of our problem.

The youth of today's game are next seasons experienced campaigners. Meaning their spark will begin to fade as leadership becomes their priority. I'd like to see another couple of seasons of draft picks really start to influence our in field energy. I'm sick of the likes of Gawn, watts and next season brayshaw petracca, hogan losing their spark as their bodies mature.

Care to elaborate...............or is it just your opinion?

Purely just my opinion.

Reckon he could be got at the right price. I seriously ask where is our money going? Majority of our talent is under 23/24. Surely there's room to front end a deal for someone.

He's 26, offer 3 year deal.

We are running out of mature targets.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
