Give it a few more hours mate.  After a loss we seemingly have plenty of these sorts of posts.  It makes for excruciating reading.

[censored]. We lost today because we drafted Toumpas instead of Wines.

Our F50 defensive pressure was abysmal. .They did what tthey wanted exiting   our forward lline. The 'structures' we set up work rarely. We have leaked goalsout the back more than any team . Look at goals within 30 nmetres conceded. That is where the game is lost . That is a coaching thing. It'ssetting up a defensive press that Iis too high and not having a sweeper

Port did a fantastic job of getting under our skin today, niggled all day long. Players spent too long looking at the umpire (fair or not it doesn't matter) and didn't switch on.

We couldn't stick tackles.

Nothing wrong with the forward line, they are dangerous when the rest of the team do the right things.

Jetta was great in the back line, I like what Wagner does by foot if he has a few seconds. The rest were pish (other than TMac every now and then).

The inside grunt of the midfield need to know that not every single one of them has to go at the player with the ball, makes it too easy for the opposition to get the ball out to a man in space (even if they fluff it, no Dees are there).

Also, on our defense. I doubt these stats are put down, but we hear on the coverage where we are doing well in so many areas on recent years... I think it would be interesting to know how many scores we get out of the backline v other teams.

Oh well, on to next week.

I turned it off after qtr time and just checked the scores every 15 mins or so thereafter on the AFL app. It was like watching a WAFL game with the standard of play, the crowd, the ground, just the whole experience was second rate.

I'll not bother watching the replay.

Bang on with your opening point on niggling. A couple of eye-gouges, bit of push and shove, mouthing-off. Did anyone see the footage of a Port mid slapping down Chunks' hands whilst he had his hands on his hips?

Amazing Jones didn't turn around and give him one in the chops. And Viney losing his cool a bit. We got distracted.

Petracca has played 5 in a year and half so not sure what point you're making. We dont count mccartins injury to petraccas?

Paddy is strong, good contested mark and looks more promising as a future star.

Didn't say Trac is a dud but saints got it right and got the better player.

And im also sick of our club bringing players back into form. A few people mentioned Dixon would star today and he did. Again all year he hasnt done much but fires today.

Totally agree and it galls me too. However Dixon hasn't been that bad this year. He had kicked 21 goals before today and now 26, same as Hogan. He's 5th in total goals across the league, 5th in total contested marks, 9th in total contested marks inside 50.

He's 8cm's taller and much heavier than TMac and our tallest backline player OMac, is but a babe and looks like a pretzel next to him.

The thing that is also annoying, is that in the tradition of Cloke last year, Daniher last year and Membrey this year, a player who both this year and across his whole career has a ratio of Goals to behinds of 2:1, kicks 5 straight.

Two small whinges, we weren't good enough today, but there was a centre bounce in which Port got the clearance and kicked a quick goal, however Trengove hit Gawn in the face with his hand as his arm came down in the ruck contest,  it was accidental, but surely it should have been a free to Gawn. Same with Dixons arm swinging back into Garlands face.

Lol .... yeah right.

I've read worse from you.

Which one was that? Where i said Tom McDonald needed to have a good hard look at himself?

Or Garland is a very ordinary footballer who has only had 1 good year.

Go on.. Let me see em all.

And Dixon whacking Jetta in the face too.

On the 5.0 business, the reason other team's key forwards kick 5.0 against us is because we let them mark it 20 metres out straight in front.

What was with the port players raking their hands down the faces of Gawn and Jetta ? I don't think either of those was accidental. Dixon should be scrubbed out for the elbow into Garlands face. That was a weak dog effort.

Viney can't handle a tag

He needs to get used to it. If he can't, then his teammates need to deal with it better. Jones has spent years dealing with a tag on his own - perhaps he knows what it takes to assist young Jack...

Perspective people .. Port have 47 ave more games than us & ups & downs are expected?

What annoys me the most is playing our home game away!

Understand Indegenious round etc but is this a game we sold?

Question is there no more home ground advantage???

Experience means bugger all to me when it's our experience that lets us down.

I love Bern more than most, but his inability and reluctance to consistently remain an A grade footballer is killing us.

Played out of position? maybe, but Bern, you're better than holding grudges...

This Diamond Defence is going to kill us going into the back half of the season.  Doesn't work against teams that just ignore it and spread and run around or over it .  Hogan yet again misses  crucial pressure shot  from easy range.

I wasn't there - like most of us have just watched it on the television, but it's important to note that the diamond defence applies to the centre bounce set-up.

Once the centre bounce passage is concluded we revert to pretty much a man-on-man defence, except several of our players have a licence to move up (press). What was incredibly poor this week (as it was against St Kilda) was that we seemed to constantly be caught allowing their players to break from the stoppage area unimpeded or at least not majorly harassed. As a result they were able to link up and go over the top and you don't miss to many running into goal from 10m out - unless you are Travis Cloke.

While we all know how poor our small forwards were today, there's no doubt our lack of run through the middle (defensively as well as offensively) played a huge part. Apart from Hunt we did not seem to be able to enact any chase downs after the first quarter.

You have to wonder why we went with such a young side, especially since we allowed two of our slower youngsters - Newton and Neal-Bullen - to play in tandem in our midfield - one maybe, but two is just ludicrous when you want to press.

The good thing is that quite a bit of experience will be brought back into the side next week with Dawes and Grimes, plus our key stoppage youngster in Oliver.

And as we've shown all year, we are a young side and we will constantly be up and down - hopefully next week is an up.

Yes, we got sucked into the niggle too easily, got worked up by the back chat. The stupid face slapping by Viney on Ebert that gave away a goal was a classic example. Probably cost him a week or two as well.

The eye scratching by Port was pretty sloppy and not in the spirit. Even the commentator called the one on Jetta an "investment" if I recall correctly.

Lack of effort from too many key players was super disappointing. But more disappointing still was the lack of effort from our coaching panel.

How can Roos continue to [censored] up selection? How can the coaches not have a plan B when we are getting slaughtered on the counterattack? How can they not see then man up the loose man in defence killing us?

They only seem to have 2 moves: send Hogan down back (a dumb move since he's our best marking option up forward), and move Garlett to the centre bounce (where he is rarely effective).

I understand that too many players were down on output and you can't do much with that, but to begin with we needed to make more changes to keep fresh legs. We needed to prepare for Port's counterattack from the backline, which is basically their only move of the last 3 seasons. To lose so comprehensively in effort and in the box is something I hoped we were past.

For all the millions we spend on a box full of experienced coaches, I thought they were as much to blame today as the 22 on the field.

But, ..................... we prepared for their best.................. didnt we?

Seriously worried about next week now. Had some faith we might at least make it a contest but after today im not so sure.

Further evidence of our need for Prestia (And Hurley) i would have thought.

This selection/tired thing is just another Roos smokescreen. Taking the onus off the players and onto the coaches.

How coincidental that we look tired and slow against teams like Port, St Kilda, Bulldogs - teams that are so much faster, stronger and more skilful than us. We could be fresh and they'd still spank us. We were always under pressure today while they always had 5-10m on their opponent. Speed.

We have built a list of one paced midfielders that just bomb it long. Time to bring in some class around them. I still can't work out why we'd take hulett and a beanpole ruckman in the draft last year.

We've beaten absolutely nothing and right now i think the hype around Melbourne is so overblown. It's come about because of the gawn and viney improvement, and beating up on GC and Brisbane. Woop-de-doo. This group better stop drinking their own bath water.

He called the smack on Gawn in the second ruck contest of the game the same thing.

It was Alastair Lynch. Another sniper of the highest order.

I waa lucky enough to be consuming mid strength beer and mid strength bourbon which I never thought existed at the ground watching Melbourne live. Now can I just say Jesse hogan has some fundamental kicking technique issues . Kicking the thing on the point of the ball every time

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag
