Pardon my ingnorance       I haven't seen anything in the media about his Dad's illness......Is that just a rumour ? or a fact ?

His manager , the club, or the player himself do not seem to mention it in all the arggie bargie that going backwards and forwards.

Shuey over gaff, but if they offered that and Hogan was 50/50 it'd have to be bloody tempting.

Darling and Gaff/Shuey for Hogan would be a great trade...And one that i'd take in a heartbeat.

For whatever reason, Gaff gets hounded on this site (and elsewhere) for being "soft". Not everyone can be on the bottom of a pack. He has elite skills and is a serious aerobic monster. Yes he's outside, but we don't have much on the outside! Shuey would be ideal, too..

 

I think that ultimately the club want an answer - despite the unfortunate circumstances that are well documented re Jesse - and that they won't accept what his manager said yesterday, in that he is entertaining the idea of heading home post 2017. It's either re-sign, or we're trading to maximise return value. Both scenarios are wins for the club.

West Coast don't necessarily need a key forward and their biggest weakness is their midfield.

I'd be shocked if they looked to give up their best midfielders for a key forward.

Loving everyone's posts. 

For what it's worth. 

1). If Jesse indicates he wants to go I'm sure the MFC will explore possible trade. 

2). If Jesse is undecided he will play for us into next year.  I can't see him saying yes I want to go but will play one more year in Melbourne.  Does not make any sense for Jesse to do this.

3). Freo and WCE will find money in the cap if he wants a trade. These days clubs can bank salary cap, contracts can be back ended etc. Some existing players may take a drop in pay etc etc.  Freo for example have Pav retiring, Clarke, Barlow and Ballentine potentially looking to move, Mayne basically gone.  There's a couple of million or there abouts just there.

4). Both Freo and WCE can orgestrate a trade with the MFC if he wishes to be traded now. I am sure both clubs and have players and picks to give up.  Neal, Fyfe, Darling, Gaff, Shuey etc etc.

5). History says players who put contract talks on hold most often leave.  Dangerfield, Judd, Franklin, Scully, Frawley, Farmer.  Cloke and Boak both put contract talks on hold and stayed but not too many do.

In my view he is undecided otherwise he would have asked for a trade this year.  Will he decide to go back home?  If this saga drags on into next year I would say yes.

WCE would love a young key forward coming through right now with Kennedy getting on towards 30 and LeCras almost finished. Kennedy as a deep forward, Hogan as a CHF and Darling taking the third best defender.

Not the only player out of contract next year in this never ending process. Surely the list management team has plans ( short, medium ,long) opinions, and several strategies on all of the players as part of this, just as they would have had for Jesse when he previously signed. In team management we trust, otherwise we are all going to go nuts.

What I don't get is if his father is really sick why wouldn't he just go back now? It isn't like he is a FA at the end of next year.

He's not the first and there is a long list of difficult full forwards that have graced the turf before him and the indications are that he is another. Buddy, Fevola, Ablett snr, Jack Reiwoldt, Jacko, Farmer, Allen Jakovitch, Carey, maybe even Stringer. This is not a Melbourne footy club problem but the personality of someone who has to see themselves as better than others to perform. They are confidence players who's egos need constant stroking and off the field they can be quite damaged, fragile individuals. If you can control them they can win you a premiership but keeping them focussed and on track and constantly telling them "you da man" is hard work. Many of them have ended coaches careers.

Its interesting how Tex Walker responded to being made Captain after getting off-side, ending Sandersons coaching career nearly leaving and is now an inspired choice. He was certainly told he was the man.

Are Melbourne a good enough strong enough club to go on this journey. I'm a bit negative here and say no we are not. We should probably trade him. It's going to end in heart ache. Cut our losses, get as much as we can, help him out by sending him home and try once again to move on. 

If, as reported, his father is sick we can't force a trade.  It's bad practice.  What would our other young players like Petracca, Oliver and Brayshaw think about the integrity of the club if we did this?  Culture killer.  I'm a big fan of a decision before this trade period but we can't force it.  Best case is we can give plenty of space for the decision and hope that our good faith is reciprocated in his decision.  We'll have the high moral ground which I think is important for ongoing culture.

A football club has to be one of the more flexible working environment to be around though. If he were to extend his contract, but the very next day has to spend time with family, I am sure the footy club will offer him long term compassionate leave. No difference with a player battling mental illness or cancer.

He knows the direction of our football club. He knows the personnel behind the scenes that will deliver success.

Any excuse to delay contract talks is really nothing but an excuse. What is the real reason? Maybe in fact we are not offering him enough?

Gaff and/or Shuey I'm sure pretty much any of us would take as a part of a trade but I have to ask. Is Darling not just a second fiddle forward? Im not sure he does all that much that is too special... Take Kennedy out of that side and Darling would get exposed, he wont have anyone to hide behind at the Dees. I would be very cautious, the last second fiddle forward we got was Dawes. Theres nothing wrong with being the second forward like Darling and Dawes... unless there is no first forward

Am starting to get the impression the 'noise' about this is lifting a bit.  Now it might be chicken and egg, it might be even as a result of the murmurings here on DL, but its getting some legs. The CLub will do whatever it does I know, but I dont sense this getting off the backburner at all. Timing's an unfortunate thing for all  and especially  Jesse.

I have avoided commenting until now but his agent's comments don't bode well. Saying publicly that he is "torn" is setting the scene for departure and hoping to avoid recriminations for dudding the club.

 

Why say anything at all? This way if (when) he goes it's for whatever reason he cites but "he was really conflicted because we said so with a year left on his contract".

 

Very sorry if he does go but the tea leaves are dark.

So if the reports of his father being gravely ill are true (I am taking these reports at face value) what time limits do you put on leave required ? Different people react differently to family issues depending on any number of variables. The difference with just giving compassionate leave is Jesse's family is in a different state. When my father was ill and subsequently passed away, I took time off to be with dad before he passed away and after to help mum, but I could also work and see family after work, before work, weekends etc. we were all in Melbourne. 

If the reports of his indecision is due to family, I understand the dilemma as it is difficult being away from family during good times let alone during difficulties.

he's loyal to the club because he is well aware of what we've invested in him, his mates are here and he can see where we're going

his old man is crook, his family is in Perth and recent events have made the pull home very real, 

if he were a mate and i weren't a Dees supporter i'd say, request a trade home, ask for a 3 year deal and there is no reason he can't come back to the MFC in three years time after things with his old man have played out, if he settles in Perth that's fine to Because by then the MFC would have recieved a good trade for him this year. ut i think as long as this is going on he won't be able to make a 100% decision to stay, it only takes 1 doubt in his mind that he wants to be there and not here.

So Barrett goes along the lines of what many on this board are suggesting and that's if we feel he is going next year then trade him now. 

I could not agree more....

Two first rounders inside the top half dozen picks will get it done so Barrett says. 

Freo more likely than WCE as they will be pushing hard for Lobb.

I know everyone is suggesting that we keep our distance from Jesse at the moment because his father is ill. Fair enough. 

We also need to keep in mind that Jesse decided to put contract talks on hold many months ago. This was after he indicated he wanted to stay in Melbourne. Let's be realistic here. How many players who indicate their willingness to re-sign with a club only to then put contract talks on hold actually stay with there respective club. History says none or very few. I'm sure the club knows this situation better than most with our track record.
