So now that we've reached a conclusion on Emma's word-choice and the true function of quotation marks can we turn our attention to deciphering the meaning of the thread title?

If the thread title was Emma Quayle's Wassail then I am certain BBO would be interested ...??

...but I'll continue it anyway!

More than just getting it on the record, I think the bidding on academy players was also to keep the clubs intending to take them honest i.e. making them take them at the highest point in the draft.

And you could see the bidders smile at the 'farce' of it each time it happened.

I think that one of the more desirable things about trading our first round pick in the next draft is that it allowed us to get a second good young player into the list and the team a season earlier than otherwise would have happened. We are constantly fielding the youngest team week in week out and by getting the kid in earlier it gives us an opportunity to get games into them. This, to my mind at our stage of development is critically important.

My recollection of this trade period was Essendon was all over Oliver.  We needed to get a pick ahead of them when we realised he wouldn't bet there by the time our first pick came along.

Recollections can be funny things. I just went back through some of the phantom drafts and Oliver was hardly mentioned. Paige Cardona had him at 24. Quayle did have in in at 4 in her final draft but before that hardly mentioned him I think..

About the 6th big time recruiting coup by the club. I've never been more impressed. Meanwhile our recruiter's old club is falling apart.

Oliver vs Parrish I have Oliver just ahead. I think over both players' careers? Oliver's basic package on his worst day is startling. Parrish just very good.

I read that too and wondered what she was trying to say. Perhaps, Melbourne in a master stroke of trading, swapped picks in order to get future champion Clayton Oliver before evil Essendon.

Allow can mean 'permit' or 'authorise'. But it can also mean 'give the opportunity for'. Emma is using the latter.

Words can have multiple meanings, you know.

That may be, but "enabled" is more elegant.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
