its not a no brainer at all when the said #2 pick is coming off a very serious career threatening injury and is probably still gaining confidence in his foot

He will come in when hes ready, its the right call to leave it up to him

Agreed. The mental scarring of such a long and laborious injury period is often left unmeasured and unappreciated

I just don't understand anyone thinking we should rush back Trengove after that injury. Deserves a solid 10 block of games in the VFL at an absolute minimum.

The form of the seniors isn't even relevant to the discussion; I'm far more concerned about him building a legitimate match fitness before he comes near AFL again. The last thing you want is his confidence crushed upon debut if he can't keep up with his teammates.

Yoiu know whats annoying?  When we beat Gold Coast we will still be 9th!  Adelaide and Doggies play each other but have huge percentages

We would need the TIgers to beat Hawthorn to be in the 8 after Round 7

I'll just take the win thanks, HH. :P

To those who want ANB in the team, can I ask which midfielder you would drop for him? Viv has played at half back for Casey for a few weeks, so if he plays he comes in for Salem, where ANB i assume is competing for an inside midfield spot, and i can't see who he would replace there.

This is a good point. Better to keep him pushing hard at VFL level and getting games into the legs, than bring him in at AFL level and play him out of position. Happy to wait to see ANB.

I'll be extremely [censored] if ANB ends up leaving for lack of opportunity. And then he dominates up in SA.

That does happen in teams with greater depth in a certain area. But I wouldn't worry just yet. He'll get his turn this year.

Like others, I have no idea why we'd drop Dunn and Frost given Gold Coast have 2 x 200 cm tall forwards and we play a defensive zone which only gives those guys more of an advantage...

Dunn is taller than Garland and Frost is too.

How many times is Roos going to pull the 'in hindsight we probably made an error by selecting him' line? He has now done it with Lumumba by stating that they shouldn't have played him last week. WTF? Does he understand how unprofessional he sounds given this is a repeat offence and we're only six rounds into a season?

It only amplifies my concern about this week's selections.

Truly baffled.

The midfield will be where it's won obviously. But again, if we're out-marked and bodied simply because of a lack of height in defence, I'm going to have issues.

Feels like they have decided to double down on the midfield run and carry and just hope it doesn't get back enough to matter. Will either look inspired or backfire badly

Oh my god they have 2 tall forwards and we have dropped 2 talls! Why don't I just shoot myself now.

Our defense is terrible.

Dunn is ommited, Good.

Lumumba was dropped. Nah he was concussed. Well he would have been dropped anyway.

We will win. No we won't.

Michie is playing. Why isn't ANB?

Garland? Wtf?

Well in all fairness even when Garland was asked how it felt to be back in the team he responded with "squeek" and just scurried back into a hole in a wall.

I want to know what the hell is going on with Frost and why he was drafted as a backman,  played well as a backman, we are short on key backman,  yet we keep trying to turn him into something he is not!   So bloody frustrating I'm sometimes tempted to use all caps!

Dunn and Frost are nonsensical omissions. We lose Salem's skill in the backline as well as Dunn's height, and Frost who can play back. Oliver obviously a good inclusion but Michie seems like an inclusion for the sake of it. Garland is more of a liability than Dunn.

If we get stitched up by their talls again, God help me.

I think we're backing our mids to win the day and our half forwards/forward press to prevent quick GCS rebound from half back. If we can do that, we can probably restrict them enough. I'm not super confident though.

Exactly, he doesn't need to push out anyone. But Stevie Wonder could see that Neal Bullen would add more to the side then Harmes as his ability to win the ball in the midfield and his huge work rate and endurance is suited more to the 90 interchange cap.

To an extent I agree, DD, but I suspect they'd be worried about ANB's leg speed and blokes like Saad (if he ends up playing) and Malceski scurrying away from him. Harmes is quicker and although he's extremely lucky, will get the week to atone simply for his leg speed. We'll obviously be hoping he brings his A grade tackling game.

His foot skills is alot better then most in the senior team. Go watch his kick to Brayshaw against the Roos last year.

Well done to skid, im a fan and he has obviously worked very hard to get picked. Hopefully now he puts on a good performance and keeps his spot.

And I hope he gets enough games to show his worth. He has been treated cruelly in the past. Dropped after just one game several times.

Try as I might bing I cannot see how you can make the statement that it will have nothing to do with selection.

on that basis we could play any combination of the 43 and the result would be the same.

But we're only changing players around the fringe, the core of the team is basically the same. Also, only making minimal changes week to week, - OK, this week 4, but usually it's one or two. Perhaps I could have expressed it better (!) I just mean that swapping our 23rd best mid for our 24th best mid isn't going to make much difference.

Nobody is suggesting he is going to come in and dominate. People are just wondering why he isn't being rewarded for consistent performances in the VFL, when others are in the side after one good game for Casey i.e. Stretch, Garland etc.

Michie has been the most consistent - according to Plapp - so surely only reasonable that he's first cab off the rank? As for the others, it's not a case of either/or, Garland and Stretch play (very) different roles/positions to ANB and Michie. Also, Michie has been playing off half-back, whereas ANB is an inside mid, and with two half-backs to be replaced, I would have thought that the choice wasn't between ANB and Michie, but between Michie, White and Terlich.

Sure, reward consistency, but in the context of team balance.

Casey should dominate next week with Dunn as Fullback and Dawes off the Halfback.

Dont the Tigers have a good recent record against Hawthorn and they have significant injuries so maybe we could be 8th after Saturday

Haven't said a word about Garland.... Yet. I'll wait until he's actually played before assessing how it went.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
