CASEY SCORPIONS v WILLIAMSTOWN

KC from Casey

Recommended Posts

And here is his 20m sprint time - 2.97seconds - not turbo quick but not slow either. Jack Viney for comparison had a 2.95 in the AIS Academy.

Picks of the draft: Jack Trengove

November 12, 2009

FROM: Sturt, where he started in the junior ranks after moving from Naracoorte (and his original club, Kybolite) near the Victorian border in south-east South Australia. He played the last half of the season with the senior Sturt side, starring in the preliminary final, where he took a match-saving, last-gasp mark in defence. Trengove captained SA at the under-18 championships this year, where he was named in the All-Australian team.

THE NUMBERS: Born September 2, 1991. 185 centimetres, 84 kilograms.

THE LOWDOWN: Trengove has all the right physical attributes - height, endurance and speed. He is possibly the best marking midfielder in the draft - the way he floats across packs at times is reminiscent of James Hird. His skills are sound and, watching him play, the thing you notice is his constant involvement in what is going on. He gets to the right places and, when he's there, usually has some sort of say in what happens with the ball. He's a smart, brave, perceptive player with the skills to finish things off.

RUNNING AND JUMPING: Trengove dispelled any doubt over his speed off the mark at last month's state testing session in Adelaide. He ran 2.97 seconds in the 20-metre sprint to complement his awesome endurance - he's a former state-level cross country runner.

WHO NEEDS HIM? Like Scully, any club would love him. Many would choose him at No. 1 if the pick was theirs to use. But he'll become a Demon at No. 2.

IRRELEVANT YET INTERESTING FACT: As good a runner as he is, Trengove still hasn't been able to out-race his older sister Jess. His other sister, Abbie, has rowed for South Australia.

WHO WOULD PLAY HIM IN A MOVIE? Hugh Jackman. Good at everything. EMMA QUAYLE

I'd like to see Trengove in for.... Tyson*

Just a hunch but I feel like he wants it more - and therefore will give us more.

Their pace is similar.

Trenners at the same age was better.

*only if Tyson plays 2 underwhelming games in a row

Tyson is a better ball winner for mine. Trenners is a better decision maker. I'd have Tyson in my team every week. Trenners will get his chance soon, but I don't think it should be at the expense of Tyson.

If Oliver and Brayshaw keep improving, Tyson could be our 6th choice midfielder... and I think Trenners has to play in the middle.

Good problem to have I suppose...

Went along tonight and all I can say is outside the bacon & egg rolls and a very entertaining 1st term it was a very disappointing performance. Credit to Williamstown who were very good. They put a lot of pressure on the Scorpions and their bigger bodies were to much over the course of the game. Lead got out to 32 points early in the 3rd term, however the Scorps fought back to get within 14 until skill errors killed off any chance of a win and the Gulls ran away with it.

I thought the night was summed up when late in the 4th term a ball came out the back of a marking contest around Casey's half forward line. Petracca & Newton were the first two back and Newton took possession first. CP5 was looking for the handball which didn't come. Newton kept running while CP5 lost sight of a gulls player he went to sheppard who was then able to run down Newton to stop what should have been a certain goal.

Anyway, here's how i thought the players fared:

Christian Petracca: One of our best, however I don't think he smashed the door down for selection like many of us would have liked. Still makes some skill errors when trying to pull off a sceptical pass, but he'll tidy that yp. He does some really special things though, and his team mates were really looking for him. Sometimes too much. He'll get his chance soon, but if there was only one change for next week I'd say it'd be Oliver in before Petracca.

Jack Trengove: Our most consistent over the 4 quarters and his first term was the trenners of old! I forgot how good he is off his left and it's great to see him progressing so well. His pace isn't super but he didn't look slower then anyone else out there. Reckon he could push for selection within a fortnight if he continues tonight's form.

Billy Stretch: I really like Billy. His old man was my first favorite player as a kid. But he had a stinker tonight! He turned it over quite a few times and got caught a few times to. To be fair to him, a lot of his mistakes he made were made when he was trying to create some run which the team severely lacked. He'll be ok Billy, but tonight wasn't his night.

Ben Newton: Got a couple of early touches and kicked a beautiful pass to Hulett for the opening goal of the game which had me thinking he was in for a good one. Boy was i wrong! Hate to say it, but it seemed like he stuffed up a good 2/3's of his possessions for the night. And he didn't have many at that! To be fair it's only his 2nd game back, but he looked better on the tape last week.

Colin Garland: Tonight was a night for the Garland haters. He was ordinary. Given the Gulls advantage in the ruck/clearances, it was important to have someone like Col stand up and be our wall in the backline and cut off as many of their forward thrusts as possible. This didn't happen! On top of that he turned it over more often then normal. During the 3rd quarter after we'd fought back to within 14 points, Col had three kicks in the spaace of about 5-8 minutes. These kicks went - 1 Out on the full. 2 Over Trengove's head and out of bounds. Trenners could of had a run if he'd been hit up. 3 Straight to a Williamstown player. At least two of these directly resulted in Williamstown goals. Then if things couldn't get any worse, in the final term he did well to make a contest near the goal line & spoil a mark. However instead of punching it through for a point, he punched it towards the boundary where a Williamstown player gathered and snapped a goal. Can't see Col getting back in anytime soon.

Viv Michie: Was ok, however Viv seems to suffer a bit of the Trent Cotchin's. By that i mean he can rack up possessions  but his impact doesn't seem to be significant. He's a few rungs down the midfield pecking order is Viv.

Sam Weideman: Battled or night The Weed, and i was happy to see him kick a late goal (his 2nd) as it was well deserved. He gets to a lot of contests and gets his hands to a lot of balls. Next step will be to start taking a few more, but considering he often had numbers dropping back on him i thought he competed really well and used his body nicely. He'll be a player!

Liam Hulett: Really pleased for the kid. Round 1 v Frankston i thought he looked a little lost. Thought he looked a lot more confident Round 2 and tonight was very impressive with him kicking 4. Probably should have been 5. What's also good as that some were opportunistic while some were from strong marks. Hulett & Trengove's performances were the best things of the night.

Jack Grimes: On a where we severely lacked outside run, i thought Grimes game was very poor. While Stretch made several errors trying to provide something, i thought Grimes went missing big time tonight.

Mitch White: One of our better players. Used the ball probably the best of anyone and defended well. Didn't get enough of the ball however, and given he's such a good kick, they need to figure out how to get it to him more. Provided Casey's biggest highlight of the 2nd term (there weren't many) with a 65-70m torp from behind the centre circle deep into the forward line. Is ahead of Garland for mine.

Dean Terlich: Another Terlich game. Probably provided Casey the most run they had from the back line, however he turned it over a few too many times. We all know what a Terlich game looks like.

Max King: Was monstered in the ruck and it's concerning that in his 3rd year it still seems as though he hasn't put on any physical size. Kicked a couple of goals and is capable of some special things, but i don't know if he'll make it? If he's going to, he needs to be able to compete in the ruck better then what he did today.

The return of Spencer will be huge for the Scorps as they really struggled in the ruck tonight. They also missed Neal-Bullen around the stoppages i thought. And finally, so it doesn't sound like i'm only picking on the Melbourne players, i thought the Casey players as a whole were very poor tonight outside of Hutchins and maybe Munro who was ok. Special mention in the poor player category to Pattison who was in the best last week, but made sveral errors tonight.

Happy to take any questions. Sorry about the late post, but my son woke up just after I got home.

Brayshaw doesn't play in the guts as often. He's more damaging off half back or half forward at the moment. In terms of clearances, Tyson's third or fourth in line behind Jones, Vince and Oliver. Tyson is underrated on this forum. He gets caught a lot and believe me, it annoys me too, but he's a pure ball winner, who's had an injury checkered past. His 2014 was brilliant. If given a run at it and with the right support, he's just as capable again.

You don't need pace to make it as an AFL player.

Just ask Sam Blease.

In fairness - that is a bit below the belt. He had good speed before he severely broke his leg

Tyson's 20 metre sprint time  = 3.02 seconds.

I am happy that we have depth in inside mid types. Most clubs now play some of these at half forward and half back. Its a relief that our relief centre square players are actually of AFL ball winning standard. And yes he does need to get rid of the ball more quickly. He does seem to be using his overhead marking more this year. For mine in talent he is behind N Jones, Viney, Oliver and Brayshaw but thats actually a massive positive for us. I watched 3 quarters of VFL last week and could not help thinking that Neal Bullen would be playing seniors at quite a few AFL clubs.

Hnmm well, if he gets back I will take my hat of to him, but If IF pace is an issue then this might be the limiting factor!

Take a look at the player(Trengrove) when your hard on for the guys in the team die down. ie when they have a poor game. I'm sure when  "H" has a poor game or Salem, which they will, you will be screaming for Jack's inclusion if he keep performing like this. I like your passion for the team, but it appears to be binary, all or nothing. Jack is a quality player and a proven at the top level. To talk on his speed at this point in just a few games back into his footy moot. Let Jack build back into AFL with efforts like tonight.

Good on him!! I look forward to seeing more!!

While I don't think anyone WANTS him to fail I get the feeling that people are afraid to believe he could actually come back because they don't want to get excited about him again in case he fails.

At the end of the day he has been a standout in EVERY VFL game he has played this year and is banging down the door as much as anyone at Casey. The questions about his pace are meaningless, the right role and an intelligent footy brain can make it work.

He must be in the mix with Petracca for next round or two, form of current 22 would be the only thing keeping him out.

I wasn't there last night, but saw Trengove for 3 quarters 4 weeks ago and there was nothing wrong with his pace whatsoever.

So unless something has happened in that time I'm guessing Adam is letting preconceived ideas cloud his thinking.  Players don't use first gear every time they move, but when he had to on one occasion I knew his pace would no longer inhibit him at AFL level.  He got to the right spots, which is why he had 18 possessions to half-time that week and his kicking was a feature.

Can't wait for him to be back out on the G.

If you are looking for a good summary of the night then do yourself a solid, and read Angry at Casey's report... Spot on!

After a long and boring drive from Adelaide we got to the ground just before the first bounce. I won't do a full report as my eyes were hanging out of my skull and I was coming down off the caffeine I'd  ingested on the drive.

Petracca - Moves like a mountain lion stalking his prey, then pounces and hits like a train. Oppo players definitely don't like him and he is very vocal out on the ground. Didn't dominate and I don't think he'll debut until the Bulldogs game (howl me down if you want)

Trengove - Smart footballer who WILL be back in the side once required. The end.

Terlich - Run out of defence was good. Disposal was poor. Barks instructions all night and tries to show leadership but injury is the only way he's back in the Dees for mine. A poor man's H

Garland - See above.

Max King - Check out the replay in the 3rd for his scissor goal out of the ruck. He should celebrate by eating 300 schnitzels ?

Weed - Should've received a ton of frees early but the umpires were happy to let him get molested every time he went for a mark. Strong at the contest and aggression is on point. Debut will come and could be anything but for now can share the schnitzel fest with Kingy.

Grimes - I thought he started really well and at times looks well above this level of footy... It got me excited... Then came the errors of judgement while carrying the ball and disposal errors as well ? Another who on current showing will only play AFL if injury requires it

Newton, White & Mitchie played ok games and I didn't really give them enough of my love to go into too much detail. Mitch White the better of the three though!

Liam Hulett - Now this kid makes me smile! Tall, solid and moves well. Impacts every contest and has a bit of cnut in him. Angry & effective game full of opposition niggling and just all round bad-a$$ attitude... I was impressed!

Anyway, ground was slippery in the conditions but conditions don't affect hunger for the ball and the Gulls had the better of that department.

Speaking of hunger... Kingy & Weed... Your schnitzels are ready!

A players' pace can appear to be different depending on the quality of the opposition. A quality team like Willi may not allow soemone like Trenners time and space, and that's where he could be perceived to be slow.

I take stats from VFL matches with a grain of salt. Unless you've watched the game like AF and AAC, you can't determine whether a players' performance would stand up at AFL level.

Having said that, it's encouraging that Trenners was one of our best last night.

Yeah, there is a bit of guesswork in determining the jump between the VFL and the big league. His class and footy smarts got Jack into the right positions last night, but when the game was on the line, he didn't have that quick two second burst that can give you that little bit of time (that Clarry seems to have). Given this was a step down in intensity, he'll have even less time against AFL quality opposition. Therefore, where he plays when he returns to us is very important.

I've seen enough footy to know if pace is an issue, mate.  You're making stuff seem far more complicated than they are.  Then again, it may suit your cognitive bias.

And you may take the stats with a grain of salt, but the Melbourne coaches and selection committee don't.

Yeah, they actually watch the games to make their assertions.

Its sad whats happened to Grimes. In 2009 to 2011 he was rated as one of the up and coming players of the competition.

Then just lost all confidence when appointed captain and the weight of the world on his shoulders. Injuries played a part along the way too.

He is currently stuck on 98 games.. Will he get to a hundred?

I wasn't there last night, but saw Trengove for 3 quarters 4 weeks ago and there was nothing wrong with his pace whatsoever.

I think you have put the most salient point in this post. This discussion should not be about pace and should be about the ability to get to the right spots which is what you have witnessed. There have been many footballers who have not been blessed with pace who are valuable because they get to the right spots and on the flip side we have seen many players with pace to burn who have a penchant for getting to where the ball ain't. If Trengoves pace is adequate and he is getting to contest and letting his smarts make him a contributor then all is good.

If Oliver and Brayshaw keep improving, Tyson could be our 6th choice midfielder... and I think Trenners has to play in the middle.

Good problem to have I suppose...

What if Tyson keeps improving ? Blows that little theory out of the water.

He'd want to get on his bike a bit more with the improvement then. Granted he's gotten slightly better since the start of the year, but I don't think any of us believe he's reached the level we expect of him as yet.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
