This will damage them mentally.  If a virtual VFL side can toy with us like that, what hope do we have.

Terrible performance granted, but I think the state of Essendon's team has been overplayed.  Kelly, Stokes and Crowley would be welcomed and playing for other clubs if it made sense for other clubs to have them on reduced size lists at their respective ages.  Looking at their team, there aren't that many absolute duds listed.  Their problem will be when they have injuries but at the moment I don't think they set up as putridly as many seem to think.

Lumumba dropping of marks with no pressure.

Watts lack of any Intesity and they way he was man handled by old man Kelly.

Hogans head is in WA.

Kent did he play?

Gawn wants to be best ruckman in the competition?

Could go on all day..... I'm done.

This was a side that just wasn't willing to work hard for any part of the game yet alone 4 quarters.

Yep, in a nutshell.

This game had nothing to do with coaching or selection. The team we had out there was more than capable of winning this - if they'd wanted to. After all, we were leading half way though the last quarter.  It was also a game that was lost between the arcs. The way the ball kept finding its way to Daniher had nothing to do with the backs, and everything to do with the mids.

Essendon were ALWAYS going to be really up for this - first game in Melbourne, and they were playing for the club, the supporters, and especially, for their captain and the others who were banned. Too many of our players didn't come to play, with predictable results.

As a footnote, about the worse game I've seen Viney play for a long time. I can only presume he was sick or whatever, difficult to explain it otherwise.

I am so angry with that effort displayed today. Worst loss in the club's history. Getting beaten by a team of ageing hacks. Time for Roos to step aside if he can't get them up on game day.

Unfortunately, it's not.

And Goodwin was also in the coaching box today...

The tackle technique is exceptionally poor. So many push in the backs.

What role does Salem have at the moment. Doing nothing.

Tyson tried but his disposal is a massive fail.

There is very little leadership onfield.

We were horribly outcoached.

Delivery into the forward line is atrocious.

If Bugg has been brought in to the team why the hell didn't he go to Zach Merrett?

You can put Gawn in the ' Getting cosy and taking it easy basket' after signing a juicy contract..

I said similar about Salem in another thread. He is a tidy player and he definitely isn't soft, but he just leaves we wanting so much more. He should be getting 20+ touches a week and bossing games from half back.

unfortunately, i totally tipped it. if daniher had kicked straight it would've been a 6+ goal loss.

must be dropped: garland, lumumba, kent, harmes

would be close to being dropped: hogan, salem, tyson, t mcdonald, bugg

Things we know...... * a week is a long time in football, * desire wins matches, * we have nowhere near the depth or quality of footballers we were beginning to believe, * this week we are the worst team in the AFL, * it's going to be a long season, * next week is going to be very ugly.

And some people were insinuating we didn't need Prestia.

Essendon did exactly what I expected of them and we did exactly what I expected of us.

Until we start winning games like today we will always be a joke and we will not attract fans. 40,000 members was a big chance if we won today, not gonna happen now.

Bugg is looking like a poor man's Viv Michie so far this year.

Yeah Salem is a concern.. he's becoming a bit insignificant.  Seems to think he can break tackles but looks and plays like 70kgs of can't be bothered.

We need him. But almost no chance we get him. The suns did these guys by 10 goals in a canter and if he doesn't like it there he'll go to Hawthorn or someone else decent.

We know our midfield isn't quick and doesn't run hard enough. Unfortunately I'm not sure how to fix it. Viney, Brayshaw, Tyson, Oliver, Petracca, Trengove aren't just going to get fit and fast overnight.

Pfft right... Last I look its a discussion board. Its my opinion from  watching him today after getting towelled up by someone who did absolutely no pre season this year.

Garland hasn't impressed at with this season. Would be tempted to drop him next week. Maybe give him one more.

Garland has been like for the last 3 years. But he apparently has good leadership so its all good..

I find the coaching comments interesting. There was nothing to coach. If the players don't want to run and compete at the level required, then Roosy, Goodwin and the boys may as well pack up their clipboards and head home.

If I was to be critical of the coaches at all, it would be that they are somewhat responsible for the mindset of the team. But as for match day moves and tactics, there wasn't a hell of a lot to work with today.

Watts wasn't poor by comparison to his teammates but well behind last week's effort.  I had Kennedy and Jones amongst our better players but Essendon made everyone look bad. I despair fronting up against North next week with this lot.

Unfortunately, Jack was the old, timid Jack Watts. Had a couple of good moments with ball in hand, but he was clearly carrying a niggle that he couldn't get over. He shouldn't have played if that was the case.

We're just as likely to win next week. This is what I had hoped we were past. That is, the inconsistency from week to week. I'm more confident going into the North game than I was going in to today.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
