This comment made me chuckle:  'This {the transition} may not stop supporters from urging Roos to remain should the Demons press for finals, or calls for him to step down early should the season not unfold as hoped'.  Yes, us DL's are very good at extreme mood swings from one game to the next!  We are such a fickle lot! 

But more interesting were insights on where our team is at:  Having assessed their own list and that of rivals, the Demons believe they will have 20 to 23 "good" players this season, up from "13 decent players" in 2013, whom they can rely on each week to perform. Their analysis shows the top-four teams have about 27 whom they can call upon.  That is an extraordinary turnaround in list quality.  The big gap with the top-four, of course, is in experience but that will come.

Also," Internal valuations show there was a 27 per cent discrepancy last season in terms of what could be considered over-payment, but that margin is set to be slashed to 4 per cent this year, meaning, Mahoney said, "we are getting to the stage of paying the players what they are worth".  Going from 27% to 4% 'overpayment' in one year is absolutely huge.  I suspect that as a few highly paid player contracts expire this year that 'overpayment will disappear altogether - a very good position from which to manage our list and salary cap.  (Just as long as they leave plenty for Jesse )

These show how hard Mahoney and Roos have worked behind the scenes to right the ship from a list admin perspective. 

From the article, I got the impression Roos may like to stay at mfc but Mahoney's comment caused me to doubt he will be invited to.  I guess we have to think about the $1+m we save. 

Now we need the icing on the cake:  players to do their job!!

I thought any role for Roos from next year would be part time at most. If he wants to work for good money I think he'll rejoin the media

Had me thinking:

Pedersen new 1 year deal

Dawes backended contract

Howe and Toumpas shipped off

Garland new deal

Grimes getting towards the end of a deal

I wonder how it accounts for Melksham (are we paying him?) and if Trengove possibly playing (on a new deal) changes the numbers

The reality should be that only players who we trade in or create interest on the open market should be 'overpaid'. Melksham, Dawes and Lumumba might be the overpaid recruits, but Tyson, Vince and Garlett have all been good value. Similarly our players who would've been in demand when last out of contract - Jones, Gawn, Viney, Dunn, McDonald they have performed as well.

If Roos can have such an influence on team culture and leave a lasting trademark like he did at Sydney in this, his last year at the club, then see ya Roosy - you've done your job. I reckon the club will leave it up to him and how comfortable he is that his job is done.

That said, if were discussing this without Macca in the frame I would be a little concerned.

Roos would not be retained on a $1.5m salary. He would be realistic enough to understand a diminished role in admin/culture maintenance or whatever would be worth signifcantly less. He wont leave to coach elsewhere. He would be a tremendous asset to retain around the club.

 

If Paul Roos wants to stay at the MFC he will stay at the MFC, i would be absolutely shocked if the clubs position was any different.

The fact we are still talking about Roosy being at the club in 2017 is good news to me. 

A good season in 2016 i reckon we might just keep him around...

How deeply can he get back into the media (for 'the big bucks') and still have a meaningful role at the club (for the 'not so big')? What sort of media might be off limits? He manages '360' while deeply in the club...

We need a settled and consistent approach to our football, letting Roos goes means another turnover and change of direction. I would love to see him stay and continue to support and give direction to the club. Happy for him to hand off the coaching to Goodwin and others, his skills and the respect the players, supporters and the football world has for him is 2nd to none. We need the influence of someone like roos to inspire our players.

That was one of the more intelligent articles from Jon Pierik. Talking about how you measure the players in terms of league player and paying overs. Finally something tangible.

David Schwartz was correct in that some of those players back then should've given the money back.

In 2013 having 13 players was generous. I thought we had 12 last year (2015). This year I'm undecided, I'll to a few more training sessions, maybe 18 players.

If Paul Roos would like to stay in another capacity, we is more than welcome. Give him an office, phone and a Demons shirt, stay on, please Paul. I have every confidence in Goodwin, and having Paul around who has proven he can work with others and step aside. If only some others could do the same (ex-PMs) included.

Why aren't comments like this being raised to show that the current salary floor plus free agency is clearly not working! 

I like the idea of him moving into an academy role like he had at Sydney before coming here (if that's where we're headed)

Roos is a proud bloke, I don't think he'll take off before we see inroads. He won't want to sit among the media and listen to them take pot shots at him over MFC. If Roos can manage to get this club back on course, his standing among the media will be sky high. I don't think he'll take off over 2016. I think he will stay on for another couple of years after this year.

A massive congrats first to anyone who's contributions and content, however small.. are always appreciated in this camp as live interstate. I was reading Demonland for 2yrs previous before joining but anyway my long point is it can be quite funny watching/reading ppls perception or attitude when contradiction over time when we should just be thankful and thank god Roos coached us in the first place (smirk) Serious note though as this only place I get info on my team besides papers some of the mods should scroll some past, old posts for any current topic and to watch the transformation and overhaul of this footy club was/is still amazing... to see how bad and mismanagement to now be cheeky enough to look a gift horse (roos) in the mouth and denounce his future service or last year...Our attitude has changed significantly...:)

Yet to commit?  I thought hed made it clear many times he is done at the end of 2016?

Like most of us, Ive always hoped he would change his mind though.  Would be fantastic if he stayed on past this year.

Well...yes and no BBO.. He may well have done one job, almost to completion but there may wel lbe now another in the calling .

I prefer "We need Roos to stay because the job is not completed."

I believe the Roos is a culture changer. I believe Roos is a developer, strategist , teacher and mentor. Will this ever be complete ? The answer is no and the game and our club will be ever evolving. To have a person of Roos credentials still at the club to be part of the continual evolution in any way he wants to be involved would be a huge plus in my mind.

I guess that explains the 34% who voted 'Other'.

What we need now is continuity and stability. 

I think we need Roos at the club in some capacity but in one where he is not perceived to be looking over Goody's shoulder. 

Tis a tough equation to maintain.
