I'm with Wiseblood. Give him a go, wish him well and hope he recovers. Even if he isn't marking, he is a handful for a defender and his work in packs is very robust and effective. And whilst he is wearing red and blue, support him, don't bag him.

I would be - nothing to be served by this.

We can't get another player onto the list. We can put Dawes on the LTI list and get a rookie upgraded.

There may be internal club discussions with him if indeed the injury is long term about mentoring/helping with the forwards for the season whilst he is injured  and they will reassess at the end of the season.

I think he will try and recover and if he can't get back even at Casey level that they/he will pull plug at seasons end. (or near seasons end). As to the clubs intention on next season even if he was fit - that's a different discussion altogether.

He's been injured at the start of every year and played 12, 18 and 14 games in his 3 seasons at the MFC. Not great ones, but some decent games and patches of form. 

I'd be tempted to put him on the LTI list so there's absolutely no rush, but there's also a reality that his best value might be to get him back, get him playing and let him cover for young talls. 

I guess the question is what rehab program does he try now? Looking at him yesterday he really is top heavy, but he's not exactly carrying weight in the upper body just his legs are so lean. I'd send him away to do some completely different training and try and build the strength in his core and legs before he starts running again.

A calf injury for an older player is one of the worst they can get. Since this appears to be a recurring injury, he may be in trouble.

I wish him the best, he is a hard worker and a nice guy and deserves a break.

However, if his calf stops him from playing regularly this year, I think it may be his last with us.

we don't want to get rid of him before contract ends, but can anyone seriously at this stage see him getting an extension?   unless he removes his Clark Kent suit & glasses & takes flight.

Agreed, but there is no pressing need for him to retire.

I will suggest he will start rehab and in the meantime I am sure they will utilise him like they are already are. The end of the year decision will take care of itself.

Poor Dawes, he frustrates the hell out of me at times but this is just plain cruel.  Every time he thinks he has overcome this issue it bites back.

I am happy Pedo seems injury free to cover Chris if need be (because we don't actually know how long he is out) and really i think they are almost identical in their impact on games, maybe Dawes works a little harder but Pedo can mark, they just seem really similar in the way they contribute.

I think we have the players to cover if he is long term, and it's time he didn't rush back.

Regarding Pedo, I haven't heard anything about him in any pre-season reports.

I'm assuming he is fit? Has he been training as a forward, from reports its sounds like as if Frost is preference from the coaches to play that lead up CHF forward role.

I do not recall seeing his name in the rehab groups, and im too lazy to look it up.

From training reports he has been working on body positioning in marking contests with Weideman and Hulett. ( Dawes does get in good positions to mark - just doesn't complete the deal)

I think they could also use him in teaching running patterns in the forward line.

Fair call, will be interesting to see if he goes down the assistant coach path in the future or follows up on his studies.

It has been a week since I was down at Casey, and Dawes must have been very close to full training again. He posted the best time in the rehab group for 50m, but then look what has happened in the last couple of days!

Pedo was very impressive.  I think I said many have thought him to be slow around the ground or just simply not up with the play.  That was not the case with what I saw on the day.  He was playing a CHF type role and was providing link ups all around the forward line.  What stuck out was his mobility, which I haven't noticed before.  Like Gawn, he was in everything. 

So while I hope Dawes gets back to playing, Pedo will be a more than capable replacement, and if he plays the way he is training, he will become first option very quickly.

I do recall similar things being said about him, that's why Dawes going down, for me, is not the end of the world.

To me Pedo looks really good when he is in the play - he contests well, marks strongly, make good decisions and his foot and hand skills are good ( although he does miss the odd easy kick at goal). Whether he gets lazy, balls watches or is too slow to get to some contests, in the words of Jack Dyer  - "he gets to where the ball ain't".

Your training report provides hope that if he is in everything now he can continue this into the season proper.
