Quigley's Draft Rankings

I like Quigley's write up on Aaron Francis. I agree with it, it just makes so much sense. I have him at pick 7, I can see why he's rated him at 3.

I keep thinking back to my initial thoughts on his character, his interview as well as his ever-so-noticeable footy strengths as discussed in the Francis thread.

It's a weak draft already, and most of the best talents are academy kids, but we have thrown all our eggs into this basket.

If the recruiting staff get this wrong it will set us back another five years. I sure hope these guys know what they are doing.

Sanderson just said on radio the top 25 are as good as any year.

It's not unusual for drafts to get talked down in the lead up.

Quigs makes me wonder whether the best tall available at 7 might be Hipwood. It may be that he has advantages over both Weideman and McKay as a tall-forward-second-ruck.

If we put a bid on Hipwood at 7, it will upset all of Brisbane's points calculations, because they would have expected him to go 10 picks lower. They may well not be prepared to cough up enough points to match a bid at pick 7, and may keep them to ensure they nail their other academy picks. Especially considering they would have already picked up Schache, who's a similar type.

So what do others think about making a bid on Hipwood at 7, Quigs or no Quigs?

And if we do, is the difference in points between 10 and 18 (or 20) enough to put Brisbane in the position where they can't afford to match it?

There is a deficit of over 1700 points that the clubs can go into - and BL have enough points for Hipwood and Keays to go early.

They will be fine to pick them up.

After reading Quig's reviews of the most touted players, I wouldn't be unhappy if we picked up Francis and Oliver. If Francis goes down back, then Frost could become a forward option! Oliver seems ready to play in the midfield.

Francis has forward stamped on him too. Not just down back IMO. He reads the ball so well in the air, leads exceptionally well. As Quigley mentions, he plays much taller than the 191cm suggests.

I like that combination too. This is by far the most intriguing draft that I can recall. What makes it intriguing is trying to find that diamond in the rough. Not that it's all that rough mind you..

How would it set us back another 5 years? Seriously, give the team some credit, the drafting over the last couple of years has just about set us up for another 10.

He will hope that one or two of the players he underrates, underwhelms and the ones he has put a bit higher hopefully 1 or 2 succeed and he can suggest he knew better than the rest.

That said, Hibberd is probably my top 3 favourite players in this draft, and I think he has all the attributes to become an outstanding AFL player and i personally rate him in the top 10, so i agree on that!

No list is dead on 'bb' as you know, but saying that if we get this wrong it will set us back 5 years (the post I was answering) is a bit of a stretch.

It was a good read, took up the morning of work which is great.

Rankings are so subjective, I started trying to do one the other day 1-30, but i absolutely battled as I probably hadn't seen enough of the interstaters and I held bias towards Hibberd and Gresham.

Draft time of the year is always fun, considering everyone has a different view. I really liked how he rated Mckay relative to the other two in competition with him, again because i think something similar.

You've just described Barry Prendergast. Wanted to show he was smarter than anyone else. Boy, that worked well.

What I like about Quigley is he gives a really good outline of the player. Calls it as he sees it and provides us information. If he was that good he'd be on a recruiting team somewhere. The fact that he isn't means he's just an average observer IMO. Not that I care, I enjoy him.

Not necessarily. He may be the very best out there, better than all the professionals. But he might also be the best rocket scientist there is, too, and doing that for a living.
