Surely no one is allowed to play without a mouthguard!  Mouthguard's have changed since I played (rugby.... sorry). They can be almost invisible now ... but you simply should not be allowed to play without one!!  You shouldn't train without one. (I'm the son of a dentist)

And on topic... He is a mighty exciting young player... very very excited... could be anything...

Rob Flower never wore one!!

I wanted Wines we got Toumpas

I wanted Oliver and we got him,

Sheeit how many on this site now would have Curnow, Parrish and others now??

Yeah, not too bloody many!

Sigh, Oliver is one of the brightest stars we have had in a long while, could be anything and I'm tipping 200 games plus!

Thank Christmas we got one high pick right, FINALLY!

^_^:wub::lol:

Jeez, he looks good...

Very exciting next few years for our midfield but more immediately - he is a big chance for GWS.

I reckon his RS odds will shorten quite a bit.

Needs to work on his field kicking.  :)

Pretty happy with the rest of his work.  How was that passage in the second (I think) where he just turned into a wrecking ball and crashed contest after contest and kept winning the ball?  I'm pretty sure he wasn't credited with all of the disposals he got from that minute or so.

We've got something pretty special here. His vision in traffic, exemplified by THAT handball in the fourth quarter, is amazing!

In the team for round one on the back of the past three games. He's the kinda player you'd love to play alongside.

He got 4 in about 10 seconds

Kid is going to be a gun. He is ready to go Round 1.

Get excited, to think we have AvB, CP5 and Gus to come back thru the midfield with him, look out!

Lacks class. Looks like another Jordie McKenzie or Mitch Robinson. Has a manic style, but I see a heap of turnovers with this guy.

Looks pretty good this bloke hey....

Some light amusement from Talking Carlton poster 'buzzaaah' circa 25/11/2015...

'am hearing from a tres reliable source that Oliver is a bit of a gamble. His attitude problems led to him missing representation for the Vic Country squad. He improved somewhat by the end of the year but for a team that can't afford to miss, surprising to pass on Parish'

I am not one for big statements but is Oliver the best handball exponent since Diesel?

The only reason I thought Clayton may struggle to get a gig in Round 1 was if the coaches considered he may need to build more fitness. So I looked up his figures from today.

Time on ground = 68%. There were 19 Melbourne players who were given more playing time today

Disposals 18, Marks 4, Tackles 6, Goals 2. Handy contribution for a bloke who was sitting on the pine for almost a third of the match.

So the conundrum is that he probably isn't fit enough to play the whole game but is too good to leave out.

Hilarious to think that some posters thought we should shield him from round 1. He's Brayshaw all over again; no chance he isn't lining up against the Giants. Deadset gun in the making, this kid.

I've said the same thing the whole time and if Vanders and Brayshaw are good to go then it might come down to Harmes, Matt Jones or Oliver. Oliver is the obvious choice but Matt Jones has impressed and Harmes does a lot of good as well.

Less rotations means it's harder to even out the spread of game time but 70% is reasonable, the question might be for how long can he run out his stints on the ground. 70% is fine as long as he's not tiring whilst he's on. I get the feeling he's still much more suited to being on the ball than forward, yet he'll have to rest forward a fair bit.

It  will be interesting to see the impact the rotations cap has on distances covered in a game which may impact young players still building their endurance base.

Don't see why Oliver could not rest forward. His attack on the man and the ball combined with his marking and his ability both to fire out an hand ball or snap a goal would cause a few issues for defenders.

wouldn't be surprissed to see him in the team round 1 then back at Casey within 3 or 4 weeks. With Brayshaw, AVB, Petracca and Trenners to come back I think there'll be good opportunities to give him a few breaks this year. It was clear last year Gus tired and should have been rested more than once, with more depth it'll mean less burn out.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
