Levi Casboult

According to the AFL site he is now available.

That changes nothing for what our attitude should be - if Carlton, who are already losing Henderson and are light on for quality talls as it is, are happy to trade away a key forward who played senior football this year then that should be a HUGE red flag. If the Blues don't want him then we don't need him either.

Casboult could gain a bit of interest because his strengths are so obvious and appealing. Obviously his weaknesses are also glaring. I would not be surprised if Carlton net something decent from trading him, but I just can't see Roos and co going for someone like him.

Did you feel ridiculous as you posted that? Because Garlett and Casboult are completely different cases. Garlett left for off field issues and a complete falling out with Malthouse. Casboult has done nothing of the sort and has played most senior games this year, yet the Blues are quite happy to move him on.

C'mon Paul, you're better than that.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but Carlton's recruiting and trading has been a complete mess over the past couple of years (or longer). They've completely fluked it with Cripps and are hanging every single hat they have on his head.

Can't say I'm heaps excited by Casboult as a player, but I'm not at all concerned with Carlton putting him on the table.

Aside from their terrible ability to recognise talent, they have very little of value to offer up for trade. I imagine they're hoping someone takes him on potential and pays overs to allow them to bring in more superstars like Jaksch and Liam Jones.

Betts, Gartlett, Waite all traded away by Carlton in last year or two.

I'm not the one who should be embarrassed, but the Blues for trading such talent cheap, and you for then claiming "if Carlton... are happy to trade away a key forward who played senior football this year then that should be a HUGE red flag. Not convinced on Casabolt, but most forwards the Blues have traded out have been gold for the lucky clubs who got them.

They didn't want Betts to go, Garlett I've mentioned above and Waite was 30 (or over, can't remember...) when he was traded and he was happy to go.

To me that doesn't fit Casboult at all. When the other 3 above left they still had options. Now, not so much.

You would have thought with Henderson going they would be happy to hold on to anything else they have, as they don't have much. Wanting to also trade Casboult is a red flag to me. If they are also happy to let him leave then he must have enough glaring deficiencies that we don't need.

As I said, Casboult to me is an entirely different case to the other 3 players mentioned.

I don't disagree that Carlton's willingness to wave him in front of other clubs speaks to his quality, although i wouldn't be placing a huge amount of faith in their list management.

Parking that, I posted in the trade thread that when looking at the facts, the glaring weakness of Casboult's, namely his goalkicking, definitely improved from the moment he took on Rocca as his coach in mid April.

He kicked 2:4 in the first 3 weeks of the season. In the other 13 games, he kicked 22:8 in a team that had major deficiencies with forward structure and quality of forward 50 entries.

How he fits into the forward structure needs to be considered, but if his goalkicking truly is getting sorted then he is an upgrade on Dawes as a foil for Hogan. He's clearly a far better contested mark.

I'm not a Casboult fan per se, but the improvement in his conversion in the latter half of this season can't be denied. It wouldn't surprise me if a few clubs are interested.

That's a fair point.

However, if he has improved so much, why are they so willing to allow him to go with Henderson already on the way out and no guarantee, outside of one tall they will draft with the first pick, of others coming in?

Just doesn't seem right to me. I know their list management has been terrible recently but surely if Bolton saw something in him he would be happy to keep him around for at least another year or 2.

I agree it's a red flag if Bolton is so willing to move him on. I suppose it depends on what they think his currency is. Their midfield is in major need of repair.

aaah

Now i welcome you to the world of Carlton logic (warn..oxymoron ahead)

Imho this is where the blueboys get seriously askew.

They will think they can pull off the masterful play..get rid of X and trade in Y ( y=2x)

They work in exalted climes,so they think. Many years ago they were quite astute. Now the idea of cutting off one's nose to spite face has failed to register with them.

Why did they get Mouse ?. Why did they overlook Barker ? They think and act Strangely at the moment. So take advantage of it I say !!!

Geez, Carlton are practically starting from the bottom.

Throwing out Yarran, Casboult, Hendersen. Were prepared to ditch Kreuzer until every other club passed. Murphy and Gibbs have never shown their true potential and the rest of their list is simply awful.

There is certainly a 'Melbourne 08-09' feeling to their list management and prospects at the moment.

Only possible reason i can see is if they're confident of obtaining Josh Walker & Tomlinson, so they see Casboult as excess that they could get something decent for in a trade?

Carlton might be planning on drafting Schache as well. Hard to pass up on a dominant tall forward. Or playing Wietering forward.

But mainly if they follow the Hawthorn model under Bolton then they will want 2 rucks and Kreuzer is a handy 2nd ruck/forward, I think he's more suited there than as a first ruck where he gets monstered.

Then the tall forward spots should be filled with versatile, quick and skillful players who are useful when the ball is on the ground and win 1 on 1's by the ball coming in quick to space.

Casboult is very much a lead up or pack marking forward. He provides a good contest for kicking long down the line or bombing it in to him deep, but if you don't plan on playing that style of footy then he's not much use. Walker isn't a hell of a lot better but he is more mobile.

I'd suggest Casboult isn't so useful to us either as hopefully we plan on moving the ball quicker and opening up our forward line as well. If that's the case then despite his terrible hands maybe Dawes can do as much as Casboult would anyway when using his motor to play in space.

The lack of skills, mobility and ruck ability make it a no from me and I think I understand where Carlton are coming from.

I think he is in a similar class to Dawes and Pedo.

If I rated them (and I can imagine others rating them differently as they are all pretty similar in that they have good upside but they can have games where their negatives can be glaring) then I'd probably put Casboult on top ahead of Pedo then Dawes (who never ever kicks enough goals to be considered a good forward). To give it perspective I would only have Cloke marginally ahead of Casboult, but apart from his game against us I don't rate Cloke.

I don't understand why Carlton are ditching him, there must be more to it because he is a reasonable footballer. Mature forwards aren't easy to find. I reckon he would be a good pick up for the right team. For us we would definately need to move on either Pedo or Dawes, preferably the latter and considering Casboult is not a huge upgrade we couldn't pay Carlton or him too much to get him.

Given this scenario I don't think we will go hard enough to get him. I reckon he is a great pick up though.

I really rate pedo as a player, I think he's superior to Dawes and could be a great asset with an injury free season. I don't think we will be going hard enough for Casboult as you said he's not a huge upgrade.

Pedo's game against the Dogs was terrific. After that game I thought he had moved ahead of Dawes.

I'm not sure he has a lot of self confidence. I'd love to see him get really fit and be told that second forward spot is his.

He may have a gun year yet.

On pretty good authority.

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
