2015 Player Review - # 31 Jack Grimes

The former skipper had to battle hard for a place in the team in the early going and had a patchy season and rarely showed the class and poise that made him such a highly regarded character at the club.

Thought he was Pretty solid once he got back in the team from injury. No doubting his courage and intensity but still questionable with ball in hand.

Whilst im more than happy for him to remain at the club i feel it will be more for leadership than anythiing else as i expect he will struggle to be best 22 within 12 months. Would not surprise to see him traded.

As already alluded to we can't doubt his efforts but his disposal, decision making and lack of pace lets him down.

Still think he was pushed from the captaincy.

Has been overlooked throughout the year on a few occasions.

Like others on the list a fresh start is needed or next year may be his last in the e game.

I'll be honest, I have too much affection for Grimes to be able to fairly judge his season.

It looks like;

Played a half-back primarily defensive role, often preventing his opponent from being a target, got a moderate amount of the ball, and mostly used it ok except for highly visible clangers. There is some extent to which those clangers have been unfairly highlighted by people who have decided that they are done with Grimes anyway.

Is still contracted for 16 i thought.

Can't see him going anywhere but if fails to cement his place it might simply be he's let go then.

The way some Demonland posters have treated Jack Grimes this year is a very poor reflection on them.

No one has over stepped the line, criticism haas been hard but fair. When some people discuss Grimes they keep referring to he's a great bloke from a great family, and my favourite he's a great public speaker. To me and some others that kind of stuff is irrelevant as we are discussing his ability as a footballer. If Grimes isn't traded this year he will be going through what Howe/Garland/Toumpas are currently going through, and that is a massive wake up call. His next contract if offered one at all isn't going to be anywhere near what he's currently on. For the last couple of years he would of been cleaning up. Yes he probably was the wrong choice for captain but to his credit he did his best, but when it was time to relinquish it he clung on as it would of guarenteed him a game. The club has to make tough decisions if we are to climb the ladder and as he's already found out this year he is one of them.

I thought Jack's form was good to very good when he got a decent run at it this year. I find Roos' lack of respect / time for Grimes bewildering, as I think he has a lot of the characteristics that Roos has traditionally valued. To have him below Lumumba, and even Jetta, in the pecking order is ridiculous.

I will be bitterly disappointed if Jack is not at the club next year, particularly given the ludicrous contracts we are throwing around to average players like Melksham and Lumumba.

It's a two sided coin. I'd like to keep him as depth but I have a great deal of respect for him and wouldn't like to see him playing out next year in similar fashion with a few AFL games here and there and the rest at Casey. A fresh start may be best, but what clubs would be interested? I can't see many leaping across the table.

Agree that he's definitely been much better than Lumumba this season.

We have our oft referred to notation...NQR

Jack is more BHC

Bloody Hard Call !!

I genuinely feel for the bloke...but alas...what's best for the club is best for the club and there's always those that get caught in the middle.

I bleive he is still on the books for 16 so i'll be an interested observer as to what he does. He has smarts, and I've always liked that...delivery ...well......

Grimes was far from our worst this season. Worked hard and did some ok things.

Would like him to stay and hopefully crack 100 games for the dees. Would be nice for him to get life membership at the club after being a demon supporter his whole life.

I don't think the criticism is totally fair. An example. Last year we lost a tight game to Port Adelaude in Adelaide. We lead until a couple of minutes before the siren but they kicked a goal which put them in front. We had a chance to win with Grimes getting the ball in the clear, but his pass down the line was poor and the ball went out and the game lost. Many of my friends told me about the Grimes error?(I hadn't seen the game). When I watched the full replay I noticed that Grimes played the whole game on White who had been starring for Port. Just after 3/4 time White was subbed out. He had had 3 disposals. That's correct, Jack kept him to 3 disposals. But all our supporters could talk about was the one kicking error. The commentators mentioned how well Grimes had played as White left the field, yet in the eyes of many he had played poorly. I think we are a bit like that! I think his disposal was better this year and he is a good defender on a top opponent. I would stick with him.

Unfortunately Grimes will be 27 next year with his best years behind him. He is a great one on one defender but his decision making and execution in the modern game won't cut it in finals footy. That's what we are striving for. Trade him. No more carrying nice blokes, Watts included. I hope he can get a trade to another club as he probably has a few years left and with limited game time next year his free agency appeal may not be very strong.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
