I like that we're moving him on. AI don't think he will hurt us at another club, he's just not that good and hopefully he can become a servicable player and remain on THEIR list for a while

Apparently Port are talking 3rd rnd; we are talking 2nd.

Even tho he hasn't had a good time of it he is still one of my fave players so like others, I would love to see him be given another year.

We Certainly can't let him go for next to nothing - their 3rd rnd will be around pick 50!

The warm to hot rumours are we get Kennedy and Melksham and lose Howe and Toumpas.

What the net result with picks is I have no idea.

I sure hope our recruiting/coaching team pull a few rabbits out of the hat because I feel incredibly underwhelmed.

I hope we land that 'big fish' otherwise I can't see much net improvement next year.

Re the comments on this being a shallow draft. From what I have read it is 'shallow' after the top 6-10.

So the #10 to #25+ are perceived to be relatively even with very good players available in that range

So 'shallow' doesn't mean 'poor'.

This may result in more 'strategic' trading of picks than in past years as Clubs drop themselves down the pecking order.

Going into the trade/draft with pick 6, 24, 25 and #20 something for Howe, is a strong position to be in.

Is pick 24 in a shallow draft better or worse than picking up someone at pick 53 in a stronger draft ( two Macs) or a rookie in White and Harmes? There are always diamonds in the rough out there no matter how strong the comp is. I am confident we will get it right again.

We have had a series of good late pick ups, and until recently a few big misses earli r in the draft, so it really is a bit of a lottery.

Can anyone define a "shallow draft "? Does it mean that there are few identified superstars below 5 or 10, or does it mean 'ordinary' from there to the end? Smart drafting late has been a forté.

None of this addresses what is the right decision for our club re Jimmy's future: they know a hell of a lot more than any of us here regarding what is going on behind the scenes and in his head.

3 years at the Bulldogs. As much as Luke Beveridge can coach in his own right he's on the end of some of McCartneys best work.

He's had a full season to work with Toumpas and has passed on his findings.

By up and coming player do you mean someone who's had 2 maybe 3 years in the system and can't crack into Ports best 22?

Nearly all of us on here myself included wouldn't have any idea who's likely to be around at pick 24.

Why don't we back ourselves to draft more quality kids and develop them ourselves.

If their offer is 3rd round then it's madness letting him go for that. He's a highly rated Pick 4 with an injury interrupted three years in the system, who this year produced a game with 26 possessions, 8 tackles and 2 goals. It's evidence that he CAN play.

There is a distinct sense of panic button here based on past failings. i trust the club is looking at this sensibly.

I agree don't trade him unless it is a good deal, I see upside with Jimmy if he can get his body right and his head in a happier place. I would like to see him make it with the dees.

What sticks with me is that beaming bloody smile when he stood on stage after being drafted to us. I'm not ready to let go.

Toumpas has no exceptional AFL traits. He's a nervous nellie with ball in hand, makes horrible decisions and is hopeless in contests. And I mean hopeless.

I have zero doubt the club is encouraging his exit. Roos and co want a team of "competitors" in 2016. There's no room for Jimmy.

But for some reason Melbourne supporters want to hang on and on and on with players who'll never stand up in the heat of a final. Clearly we now have people running the club who sees this. It has Simon Goodwin's fingerprints all over it.

actually i dont care if he does. What players end up doing elsewhere is effectively irrelevant. Its what they are at the MFC that does. Jimmy aint clicking with us...lets keep looking for those that can/might.

So many just want to hold on to players out of fear.Ask any advertising guru whats the best motive in selling. FEAR. Once youre free of that youre free to actually grow. Thats what we as a club need to do. Rid ourselves of fear...and give ourselves chances to really improve.

You obviously don't read many of my posts.

Was thinking along the lines of Stretch, ANB, Harmes, Oscar and VB.

So if s young player comes on quicker than expected its justification in picking up McCacartney as development coach but if a tough call is made on a player it's clearly the wrong decisions and panic stations.

I back our recruitment team to pick another great batch of kids and I back our coaches to develop them.

I will be very disappointed if we lose Toumpas and Howe and we get back Kennedy and Melksham.. people are actually happy with that? Really?

He's a 'nervous nelly' now, but what happens when one day he looks around and everyone around him is smaller/younger than him. You lose that nervousness in close. I would hate to see Toumpas start killing it at Port and all we got was a third round and the above two.

I'm not adverse to trading him, but a fire sale is not required.

Toumpas is not alone. In fact id have 3 or 4 blokes ahead of him who could just crumble under the extreme pressure.

I don't care if he was a number 4 pick he is not up to it. If he was in contract still you would persevere but seriously re-contracting him if he wasn't a high pick there would be no discussion. Is not fast, is not hard, is not clean of decision making or disposal execution under any type of pressure. I was a fan when he was drafted but AFL is completely different to juniors and I have seen enough. Take what you can get and move on.
