Sam Blease Retires

He looked like he'd develop into an absolute gun after his first few games at the back end of 2011, then kicked 19 goals in 2012. Given how crap we were then (what's changed?), that's a good effort. Didn't work out in the end but that's footy.

Had amazing pace.

Never used it to chase an opposition player.

Blease blease blease

Help me...who cares

Another nqr

Sums up our poor drafting & development from around the mid 00s - 2012.....

How many early picks have gone to other clubs & failed..... Morton, Sylvia, gysberts, blease.. I'm sure there's more

An old chestnut of the "who do you want to see have a break-out season" genre of threads.

Yeah

Nah

Bye, Sam.

You played more AFL footy than me but I played my grades better, and harder.

Just another of the NQR's we drafted who subsequently went on to another club that exposed their mediocrity.

Wow, we really had a poor track record or drafting early talent in the 00's.

Wish Sam the best and hope he finds his calling.

He's kicked a couple of memorable goals on the MCG, which is more than the man on the street can say. I loved his highlights, it's just a shame he couldn't develop his game further.

Hard to tell exactly how much was attributed to the development environment the club provided and how much was attributed to his own skill and mindset. Either way, I won't throw personal slurs at someone I don't know. Good luck to him in the future.

An ornament to the game...

An ornament to the game...

In the same mould as, Col...

Could've been anything, but combination of bad luck, poor development, and perhaps other factors seemed to do him in.

Sad to see another pick amount to nothing, good luck to him in his next career path.

Good athlete, not much of a footballer, just wasn't up to the level.

Good athlete? Hardly. Could run fast one way.....

I think Sam listened to Barry Prendergast when he said he was going to be a much better footballer than his Eastern Ranges captain Rory Sloane.

He was picked at 17 in 2008 draft. Sloane went at #44. Sloanes family were justly outraged.

Sam probably still thinks Big Bustling Barry was right.

Franky -Says it all about the player his attitude and the club

every recruiter in the game was wrong 43 times then

every recruiter in the game was wrong 43 times then

41 times, Dane Beames and Dan Hannebury were ahead of him.

Melbourne told Sloane he was going at our priority pick (17) but it was Blease, then Strauss (19) and he was still there for our 3rd pick Jamie Bennell (35).

Ill stop now.

Sabotage is no joke Nasher. But the old line about when deciding between a conspiracy or a fackup, always back stupidity comes to mind.

When Rorys folks came back suddenly from Adelaide earlier this year, I thought he was on the move, now Ive taken the $23 on them for the flag. Dont think theyll win but the odds are good.

You're not suggesting that our recruiting under Prendergast was a joke are you, Franky?

Barry Prendergast joined Carlton in early 2012.

In 2011 Carlton finished fifth and were clearly building momentum.

Since 2012 Carlton have not finished in the top eight (excluding replacing Essendon in 2013) and look like more of a basket case than Melbourne.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
