Ideally a quality key forward who can 2nd ruck would be best.

Clark was a big loss - He hogan and Gawn would have been sick.

Also should have 5 years left in him.

Sick being the operative word

Gawn and Stef both need first ruck.

Won't work.

how do we know Gawny has to be the only ruck,,, supplemented with a cameo ruck from a 3rd tall? he's only been playing 'OK', for 2 months. at this stage, Gawny is just becoming, something approaching a major ruckman. not there Yet.

& next season is a totally different scenario all together; as a new season, but also with potentially new rules.

lets not count chickens just yet, before some new behaviours have shown themselves for longer than 2 months, before we think we can rely on them to repeat themselves into 2016.

I sat with a current MFC listed player at the Brisbane game and asked directly, how we let Martin go.

His response was, "can play a bit but a really ordinary unit". Direct quote.

ie 2016- Essendon

If true he would be getting buckets of $$ or he is very desperate to leave the Lions.

Going from the 'frying pan to the fire'!

EFC won't be climbing the ladder in a hurry!!

Sounds like a match made in heaven

Not a snow flake's chance Stef would come back to the Dees. He left for personal reasons, he won't come back for personal reasons.

The suggestion that "he left for personal reasons" is sheer rubbish. So also is any other comment on this thread to the effect that Stef decided he wanted to leave MFC.

He was speaking with friends of mine after being told that Neeld wanted him to go to Brisbane, and he was gutted. Thought that in the midst of gloom surrounding the club, he had had a reasonable year. One of his good games was against Brisbane at the Gabba.

He was already showing great potential as a fast moving ruckman who could get the ball more than most players his size. At Brusbane he has been a revelation. This year his poorest game was probably v Melbourne. Just have a look at his stats. Does any other ruckman average as many disposals as Martin (possibly Blicavs does). I watched him a few weeks ago v Goldstein and he was highly competitive.

I think he is exactly what we need. Playing Chris Dawes as the alternative ruck just doesn't work. Even when Chris played well last week, we were smashed when Max went off the ground. Martin has matured into a most impressive player--remember his game against us at Etihad last year? Remember also some damned good games he played for MFC early on as the tall on the backline against the gorillas.

He would not cost a fortune and is extremely fit.Except for a suspension I believe he has played every game this year . If we could get him we absolutely should

like Martin as a Ruck and remember him playing key back and forward whilst developing at the dees.

But he isn't a genuine forward / ruck that we require and needs to play big minutes in the Ruck to get going as a lot of good Rucks do.

Max king could be our solution as a deep forward who can mark and kick a goal. His frame and endurance will be the only thing holding this kid back for a season or 2.He is a tall s.o.b

I dont buy this 'Martin wont come back to the Demons' talk either

I heard there was a full-on confrontation with Todd Viney and there is bad blood.

I think Stef is a little bit precious from all accounts.

I heard he was late to training repeatedly and was an emotional mess due to a break up/girl.

He is far better than Jamar but if he doesn't respect Todd he can rot.

Needs to learn Beatch management 101.

A fully paid up member of Gen Y methinks.

Most of my info is from here so he might be a ripping bloke and a top get, despite being a lawyer.

There can be no denying his form since leaving us. he's been close to AA.

It may well be that we mishandled him - wouldn't be the first time.

jumbo, your thoughts? :)

So Brisbane are now set to lose both Burger AND Stef? Yikes. There are some real problems up north.

I rate Stef and enjoyed seeing him tear it up last season, but it's more than evident he can only play first ruck. Anything else that includes him spending time in the forward line and his impact is significantly reduced.

Gawn is our man. Unless Stef wants to be second in line, which I doubt, I'm not sure we'd go down this path. He'll find a home though. Essendon could do much worse.

Good post, P - man.

He'll find another club, but not at the Dees.

Everybody moves on.

geez, dogs would be super impressive with stef feeding their on-ball division.

the question is what on earth can they give up for him?

lachie hunter and first rounder in 2015, 2016?

even that would barely satisfy the bears. things are in a parlous state in queensland. no one wants to play up there.

Was a mistake trading him in 2012 (?). Would be a mistake getting him back now. That train has sailed.

The year Steph left I had a really good chat with him and Matty Bate after a chance encounter in Fitzroy. Both of them were really good blokes and happy to chew the fat. After that I was sad to see him go, but now I just don't see a spot for him in our side. Does very well as a first ruck, but now we have a better one, simple as that.

Regardless, the idea of him coming back to the MFC is slightly ridiculous.

I always liked Martin and was disappointed we traded him back in 2012. I'd love to see him back at the Dees but I'm not quite sure where he would quite fit in with the team with Gawn now the number one ruckman.

Are you suggesting two first-round picks and a player wouldn't get a trade done for Stefan Martin?

One of the more absurd things I've ever read on here!

Brisbane will do well to get a top 20 pick for him.

AFL website article has him staying at Bris now. Must mean Leuie is confirmed as going?

Rd 9 of this season I would have gone after Leuenberger. But our current dinosaurs (Gawn and backup 1st ruck Spencer) are more than adequate.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
