    • We need to give Fitzpatrick another opportunity before the end of the year and Ben Brown is a very good player and a tough match up. Fitzpatrick can also help give Gawn a chop out.
    • I think we should continue to trial McDonald forward. Dunn will take Petrie and Garland on Waite.
    • Poor Michie hasn’t been able to find enough of the ball at AFL level.
    • I still think we lack outside run, but neither Matt Jones or JKH had great VFL reports. (I considered dropping Neal-Bullen, but he has only just come back into the side and is clearly too good for the VFL.)

    Prob only change I'd make. Grimes whilst his kicking was t great at times still defends really well.

    Michie deserves another game to show if he is up to it.

    Maybe Newton to return if he plays well.

    I always remember when they first introduced the sub, we played Sydney Round 1. Sydney were on top and it came time to trigger the subs, Mark Seaby came on for them, and Ricky Petterd came on for us. We came back and snatched a draw from memory. Never seen a ruckman be the sub since.

    The first ever game with the sub rule Melbourne used Petterd who came on and an immediate impact, Sydney our opposition used Seaby. I don't think I've seen a ruckman used as a sub since.

    i dont remember the game however the Petterd/Seaby stats don't indicate any impact to the game, anyway i was just thinking out loud as something will have to be done this week.

    Agree and that's what I think we should do for this game.

    Goldy is in a class of his own and I think we need two ruckmen to smash into him all day.

    Sub Jamar off at some point. Gawn to play deep forward whilst resting means Hogan won't necessarily have best defender. Dawes plays third fiddle and hopefully makes a statement.

    I'd love to bring in White this week for Grimes and Newton in for Michie.

    Doubt it'll happen but I'd like to see it.

    Harmes stiff but I like the way we've been giving those young boys a taste. He's not playing badly, but I reckon he could find some more footy. Having him and Neal-Bullen playing is one too many who just don't see enough of it. Neither of them are impacting enough and against a team like North we need some big contributions from most.

    Need to cover Brown and its true that he's a difficult match up, but usually Harvey , Thomas and their smaller , quicker brigade cause us the most problems IMO.

    Reads the play exceptionally well, takes intercept marks & helps out defensively really well as a result. He has some close down speed & is a good spoiler. He is loose at times but is often given the sweeper role due to his other attributes and as such most sweeper style defenders do get caught out from time to time. He has been solid on gun midfielders who rest forward many times in his career. Defense is not Grimes big problem, it's what he does with the ball when he gets it that has been his issue. He tries to do too much, tries to be too cute & isn't anywhere near skilled enough or strong enough with his disposal. He doesn't provide enough with his forward thrusts out of defense either.

    I am by no means a Grimes fanboy but he does have some very good afl attributes and some very poor ones. I think this coaching group is well aware of his game & have been trying to help him fix it. He could still be a very valuable contributer, he has another year on his contract & he has eaten a lot of humble pie this year & has not dropped his head once but kept working on his game as the coaches have instructed. He shouldn't be a the whipping boy anymore & if he is named in our best 22 again it is because no one on the list is ready right now to replace him or the job he is currently doing.

    Most likely in this week based on Casey & our next opponent is Fitzy. Personally I am predicting no change unless someone is too sore next week. We looked stuffed towards the end of the 3rd qtr on the weekend but the way we finished them off in the 4th, I reckon our coaches will be looking to take that momentum straight into next week with as little change as possible.

    I agree with you...I doubt it will happen. If we only made one change after a bad loss, unless there are injuries, I can't see why there would be three changes after a good win.

    Ben Brown flogged us last time if i recall correctly. Pretty sure it was a breakout game for him. Fitzy looks like the ideal match up for him. For that reason, I would bring him in. If Salem is fit and ready then bring him in..not sure he has done enough reserves work yet though.

    Barra there is no chance Kent will play he has played 2 quarters two weeks ago in the Casey Seconds that was his first game in months.

    He could not play a full game in Casey seconds let alone the AFL.

    Agreed. Plus a goal. That's as much impact as Stretch had in a few games, more than vandenBerg had against the Saints. None of these young players are in the side because they are the best available right now. If we were worried about that then Bail and Matt Jones would be in there. We're giving the kids a run to get them used to the pace and intensity. You saw how important that is when ANB went back to Casey and had 40 disposals. It's about getting them to up their intensity to AFL level so they know what they need to do to earn a spot on their own merits.

    fitzy in to give us another tall option both as a ruckman and a possible backman, we found it damn hard to match up brown last time, we don't want to make the same mistake again. Fitzy gives us better options.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
