Watts had one of his better games for the season, and in terms of his work in close, one of his best to date. If he can show more of the physicality he showed yesterday, a lot of the noise will die down. It's not a high bar, but it will do.

His pace over 20 metres is a weapon he needs to exploit a lot more often. It surprises me everytime he hits the jets just how quick he is for his size.

Re Newton, if a a player of his ilk replaces the likes of M Jones on the list as depth, we're moving in the right direction.

We made a number of bad errors and lost the game nothing stiff about it.

We would have been stiff if we had a decison go against us in the last couple of minutes and lost by less than a goal.

Why do you want to deign the facts ?

I think jumbo's point was that we were stiff to have Cloke kicking as straight as he has in a couple of years, not that we were stiff to lose the game. Cloke was in rare form. On another day he would've likely sprayed a few.

There was also a lot made of the fact that Collingwoods Adam Oxley was allowed to roam the back half unattended and Melbourne seemed to constantly kick in his direction where the numbers dictated that he was going to win the ball more often than not. I simply didnt get that Paul Roos was unable to change things with the simple move necessary to cover that situation but I for one, got sick of seeing number 43 mark it on his own time and again. It was almost as if our one avenue to goal was through Oxley and if you are going to have a go at a player for tunnel balling the pill through goals and giving away six points, then the coach who allows an unattended opposition player to save several times more through his inaction has a lot to answer for (as do I for ending a sentence with a preposition).

It was pretty technical. If the ball stayed on the ground it was not free but because he lifted it slightly ...boom...free kick. The ump could just have easily let it slide.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but the rule hasn't changed since I was playing, you were taught to close your fist and punch the ball and you can never be called for a throw.

I'm not happy with Newton at this point. Whilst he looks like a nice enough player when he (too rarely) has the ball in space, I'd go as far as to say he appears to be the physically weakest player on our list. He gets bumped off the ball, out of contests so damn easily, no resistance at all.

He needs to go away and build strength and a tank. I think he'll be a nice icing player but at the moment he has no influence in a battling side.

You are right I am just tied of a decade of losing and having excuses made every week.

Even allowing for his straight kicking we could have won this game if we did not make all those bloody poor mistakes.

Without Two terrible passes in front of goal and the tunnel ball and there is then a goal in it.

Anything is possible but sadly we played poorly on those occasions and there goes the game.

You are right I am just tied of a decade of losing and having excuses made every week.

You've seen more decades of waiting than most, so I get where you're coming from. But there are excuses and there are realities.

The margin was at risk of blowing out not once but twice, and both times it was clawed back through honest work rate. I make no apologies for being pleasantly surprised by that. Fighting tooth and nail to stay in the contest has been a rarity for Melbourne sides in tthe past five years or more.

We rid ourselves of the stupid errors, which will come with development and fundamentally more skillful players wearing the jumper, we'll be winning that game and alot more like it.

Stopping a kid from taking 14 marks floating free as a bird in the backline wouldn't hurt either,

watts attempted mark was unfortunate, if he dived and did not take it cleanly then the Collingwood player would have run away with it. diving usually works best when you are diving forward that way you can block the ball going past you.

fitzy's throw was not a lot different from what you see players do around the ground when they 'paddle' it to the boundary, if he had had his fist closed he would have been fine.

Lots of errors, but also lots of improvement, the team looks to be playing a better grade of footy and still has a lot of upside. This year is about making progress, yesterdays game was good progress.

if you're not joking...I wouldn't be. It actually goes to the root of our malaise. A lot of things CAN be nullified . A. Lot of effort can go into scoring and those little brain fades can bring effort undone.

How many golas have we given up in the last 4 weeks on the gial line because our defenders can't kill the pill when it is dribbling around the goal line. I'd suggest at least 5.

PSD is correct it was a throw and a free kick.

It was there and the ump saw it.

If he had fisted it and not used open hands (x2) would probably have been okay
