Dawes is not on $700k, please show me where they got that figure from if you are going to throw it out there.

He is rumoured to be on around $500k.

I did say speculative. 500k is still too much.

Where the hell is all the money going then? Considering we have the same cap as the Hawks.

How much is Frawley on? If we can get Garland to demand that price we could score Band 1 compo.

We have probably front loaded many of the contracts to fill the cap. Then over the next few years when we are paying them less we have more cap room.

If Dawes was on 2 million over 4 years what we need to remember is that he isn't necessarily paid 500k every year - it might be 800k one year, 300k in the next and so forth. It just needs to add up to 2 million at the end of it.

Gotta pay somebody.

Literally, we HAVE to pay 95% of the ~$9.3m cap. That is how it is set up so that there are no more Fitzroys that just survive year to year paying two-thirds of what other teams pay.

And as others have said - we frontloaded contracts under Schwab and that would be the only way we could do reach near 100% in 2015. So I assume we are doing that.

None of this means that we have no cap to use in 2016 - only that we are paying near 100% in 2016.

no, it really isn't.

when hogan comes out of contract, the new cba will have been arranged - the aflpa is trying to get it tied to revenue in the game, around the 25% mark.

hogan could easily pull in $1m a season in his third contract, and wouldn't even be that extravagant.

i wonder what the tipping point is going to be for the afl to really become a different sort of business.

Remember all the conjecture last year and then we get Frost out of nowhere?

The year before that, we get our compo pick and no one had any idea who we'll get, and then in comes Vince?

I have absolutely no doubt that this'll happen again. Someone who's not on any other club's radar but Roos has it all sussed out. He's a crafty one.

I'll brace myself for the pleasant surprise :D

I'd be throwing $750k at Dixon and offering Jesse $1m at the start of 2016, but that's just me.

Well it is what it is. The last two trade/draft periods have been favourable for us for obvious reasons. We can assume that realistic contracts have matched those list management decisions.

I continually say it but I already think WBD have absolutely shafted themselves with the Boyd deal.

But can they win a granny without a genuine key forward?

There are risks involved so it was a gutsy deal for the Bullies but if he lives up to his potential then it will have been worth it. One variable will be the next media rights deal. If there is a substantial increase as per new overseas tv rights then the back end years of the deal may take up a smaller % of the cap than currently anticipated.

And back to my first point. A quality key forward helps you win the Granny. Players want to win the Premiership. The Bullies having Boyd gives them a much better story to sell their own players and potential recruits. Loot at the NBA where the destination clubs are now the ones offering players a realistic chance at a title.

Josh Kelly and pick 46 (3rd round pick) to Demons

Pick 5 to GWS

any backers !!!

I'd love Josh Kelly! Maybe try work Jeremy Howe into a deal.

That would make 5 players from Brighton Grammar (Kelly, Watts, Dawes, Salem and Hunt)! Maybe we might win a Premiership in the Old Boys?

I heard Mark Robinson saying that Prestia might be angling for a move away from GC, and that with a year on his contract he may even use the "unsafe workplace" argument in relation to the club drug culture.

No destinations were specified, but I bet his family would be angling pretty hard to get him to MFC.

My biggest worry is list balance. We simply can't have too many small mids.

Hopefully Tyson, Vanders, Petracca & Brayshaw provide enough size.

we need players who can see ball, get ball, use ball.

if if he can get over his knee injury without any major concerns - and it's a big IF at this stage, as apparently it was a pretty nasty one - then we'd be mad not to chase prestia.

in terms of targetting players from the northern clubs, prestia and treloar would be top tier, dixon, bennell and josh kelly next, and then the likes of plowman (richmond want him), tomlinson, leuenberger (again, tigers into him in a big way apparently), lonergan, et al.

Mine too 'Machsy'.

In addition to Gold Coast, I reckon Essendon players may be ripe for the picking and they will probably want draft picks while going through a rebuild.

Obviously some of them you wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole due to impending WADA sanctions but I reckon we should have a crack at Zaharakis.

Is quick, can win the ball and can kick goals. If someone like Prestia/Treloar is out of the question I wouldn't mind going after Zaharakis - surely someone like him would want out of that place.

Until WADA is out of the picture, a big NO THANKS to any Bombers. Can't carry them if a two year ban is brought down.

zaharakis doesn't have any such threat over his head, as he's not one of the 34. from memory, neither is zach merrett, but there's no way the bombers will give him up.

zaka would be a fine addition to our side, but bombers, as is their wont, would demand hogan, brayshaw and some magic beans for him, and then go off in a huff when we declared that price was a bit steep.

our second rounder (18-25ish) would be what you'd want to pay.

Good point. I'd forgotten about that

Dealing with Essendon is always like pulling teeth at the best of times.I say let them whither on the vine and see if we can get a good (non druggie) player in the aftermath.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
