Paul Roos - don't give us more excuses!

Roos said, and I quote, "the list isn't actually too bad" in the lead up to his appointment.

Eighteen months later and 50% of the list has been turned over and he's still harking back to the days of old and using the excuse that the older players could still be mentally scarred.

Come off it, Roosy.

This was before he actually got to the club and saw first hand just what he was dealing with. Of course he was going to be at least somewhat complementary about the list before he is hired as he will still need to coach the majority of them for the coming season.

Come off it, McQueen.

That's your perception, possibly not his.

In hindsight, and either way, it was a fairly silly thing to say by a bloke who is lauded for his judgement and careful words to the media, don't you think?

Yeah, I think he may have thought it wasn't going to be as bad as it has been. But, I maintain we're on the right track.

I actually think his judgement in what he said to the media was spot on - he may not have felt that way about the list, but he knew when he took the job he wouldn't be able to make too many changes during his first pre-season and therefore understood that he still needed to keep them onside for the season ahead. If he has a crack at the players and the list there is a fair chance they will be disgruntled before he walks in the door. Roosy knew what he was doing.

All coaches get the finger pointed when the team is losing. Would much prefer Roosy dealing with the internal and external stuff than anyone else I can think of. Give me an intelligent, positive, and practical guy every time. He is also shrewd in what and how he communicates. It is not always best to be transparent to the media and public when your most important job is player management. I think overall he is maintaining a pretty good balance. He has the respect of the media and his players. That's got to be a good thing. If he keeps the jackals from the media away all the better. As with the players mark his report card at season end.

Thats pretty soft Ernest Imo . He should be questioned if the team has gone backwards on his watch and I am not so sure he actually has the players are you?

Are you suggesting Paul Roos has lost the commitment of the players? Please tell me I'm wrong as that's just a silly comment.

do they look committed? stop being a ostrich.

If they can't get behind Paul Roos then they all deserve to be delisted. That bloke has more runs on the board and more cred in the AFL than our entire list combined.

But we know that's not the case. We put in an absolute shocker last week but I've never seen a supporter base completely lose the plot over one game like some have here this week.

which was the one game we all lost the plot, was it 1 of the last 10 in 2014 we didn't give a yelp, the 13 straight against GWS, or the Swans game where we got a few goals in Junk time

We are going back to 2014 now are we? We have struggled at times this year, no doubt, but we have also had a crack far more often than we have in years. Perspective is needed, not the blind wrist slashing so many on here get off on.

jokes aside I'm pretty worried about the way we are tracking, love your optimism, hope your a smarter man than me.

Trust me mate, I understand why some are despondant after the last 3 weeks. Our positive start to the year masked the fact that there are still major holes in our depth, and once we had a few injuries we were horribly exposed. Freo, Sydney and the Hawks have all played in a grand final over the last 2 years and we simply can't match them. Our efforts last week were poor, I can't deny that, but I don't believe it's a true reflection on far we've come since Roos took over.

QD I was at school with the evil Brother Best and other Christian Brothers of ill repute for 10 years but was oblivious to what was going on. The abuse must have been happening all around me but I never knew. There were teachers pets then there were problem kids like myself who were always in trouble. In retrospect the teachers pets were the ones being abused, some have since committed suicide. The problem children like me were eventually expelled and I went off to a High School. So he comes out prior to his hiring and smashes the list in public instead, does he? Roos isn't that stupid.

no...maybe he should have said NOTHING !! thats cleverer.

but then I never give ANY real weight to ANYTHING he says publicly. The way of the Roos is to weave and beguile

You're so right!

Voss, Malthouse and others all said how great our list was.

And it did look good on paper.

What no-one could see was the damage between the ears.

Therein was the list problem.

  • 2 weeks later...

Roos on 360 tonight was asked if the team is mentally weak.

In response, he repeated his view that some players still can't get over the past, and attributed the second half performance to this inability to get over the past.

As a Roos fan, this to me is a cop out. It's a cop out for the players, and it's a cop out for him as coach.

They have wins on the board. They now know how to win games. Most of the senior players we rely upon for leadership weren't even at the club durng its darkest days.

The fact is, when the good run and gun sides start clicking, winning the contested ball, getting it outside and attacking in numbers, the team becomes powerless to stop it. There are reasons I can cop - lack of class, lack of grunt, lack of on-field communication, poor coaching - but being haunted by the past is a tough pill to swallow.

That said, he did appear to use it as preparing for another list turnover at the end of the year. That is, those players who can't get over the past will be moved on. Smoke and mirrors perhaps, but no more excusing these players. They're either good enough, or they're not.

Its a ridiculous cop out from saving his own ass from his performance! Its getting beyound the joke now and he needs to wake up and take his fair share of responsibility from these losses.

Grow up Roosy!

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
