We did last week. Maybe not by design; the swans dropped a player back and ours didn't go with him. I think we are better off playing man on man than spares anywhere. It means we don't have anyone to kick it to when we win the ball.

He doesn't for Frawleyesque reasons.

Actually, we regularly do. Especially when the ball is in the defensive half of the ground. We regularly push our numbers up into the contest. It congests the defensive 50 which means if we do get the clearance we are pressured and we panic and we rush the kick, which of course ends up being marked by the opposition's back six, who just sit back behind the play and wait.

One of the critical things Roos has to work on is stopping this from happening. If he's organising it, he should stop. If he's not, he needs to fix it, because if we keep playing with numbers too far back behind the ball our transitions from the backline to the forward line just aren't going to come together.

By virtue of necessity (Pedo injured), Watts and Howe took some centre bounces, and did OK.

I know the ruck contest is a dangerous position for the immature bodies and/or poor technique; but we should have seen glimpses of this in the past in cameos etc...

Chris Scott will force Roos to again think proactively and radically in the ruck this week. Watts or Cross????? on Blicavs. I would go Tom Mc. If Stanley plays, we might need to think of a Howe type around the ground with him.

I don't mind seeing Watts or Howe go third man up around the ground when there's a solid body there too. Watts did one very smart tap that resulted in a goal last week.

I'd hate to see them in actual ruck contests though. I just have visions of Jared Brennan contesting the ruck for Brisbane a few years ago and getting a bad knee in the ribs straight up. I'd see Hogan in there before I saw a flanker go in there to get killed.

I'd have thought that Howe can potentially jump high enough in a ruck contest to avoid any potential knees.

Both Cross and Watts have been going 3rd man up for a lot of this year. Watts did it effectively against the Dogs.

3rd man up is useful against a good ruck, but it's not very often you can get a free man to go 3rd man up and then also outnumber a team in the direction that the 3rd man hits it. Most of the time it's just moving the problem, which is fine against a team with a dominant ruck or a particularly good clearance midfielder, but I don't think it's a substitute for winning a clear hit out to advantage.

It's Cross' forte. In fact he had 70 hitouts in 2010 with the Dogs. Although it's quite odd that Howe never takes ruck contests when he can seemingly leap at the flick of a switch, he'll probably just forget and try to mark them though
