READY FOR THE KILL - THE HAWTHORN GAME

READY FOR THE KILL by Whispering Jack

A couple of weeks ago, we breathed a sigh of relief when two of Hawthorn's most important players lost the plot and earned themselves a few weeks holiday courtesy of the AFL system which punishes such indiscretions as whacking unsuspecting opponents in the head and the like.

It didn't take long for the suspensions of Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis to have a negative impact on the Hawks. Their surprise defeat at the hands of the GWS Giants put them three games behind competition leader Fremantle and, even at this early stage of proceedings that makes the possibility of them having to negotiate an interstate final a likely outcome given the line-up of teams currently near the top of the table.

All this spells trouble for Melbourne reeling from consecutive big losses at the hands of two of those big guns and now staring down the barrel at a confrontation with the wounded reigning premiers. They are not likely to take the Demons easily or give any concessions but rather will approach this clash with a heightened sense of "unsociability" given how problematic a surprise defeat at the hands of an AFL minnow would be to its prospects of pulling off an AFL premiership "threepeat".

So Melbourne fans going to Saturday afternoon's away game at the MCG should not draw any solace from the fact that Hodge and Lewis are going to be sitting in the stands along with one or two of their key defenders. Hawthorn will come out fully pumped, ready for the kill and out to add to its imposing string of impressive wins (eleven in a row) mostly by huge winning margins stretching out to almost a decade. And sadly, judging by how meekly their opponents have succumbed in the past couple of matches, they won't need to whack any heads to achieve that feat again on Saturday.

Hawthorn's reputation is not only one of "unsociability" but it is also completely ruthless and, unfortunately for Melbourne, that streak has come out the most this year when the Hawks have been recently wounded. You only need to look at how they bounced back after losses to Essendon and Port Melbourne by flogging the Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne to know that there will be no complacency in the camp after their upset loss to Greater Western Sydney which was their first ever to one of the two new franchise clubs.

The problem for Melbourne is that it has almost picked the wrong week to come up against
Hawthorn. Sure, it would have been much worse had Hodge, Lewis and Lake been available but the Hawks have a happy knack of being able to cover their losses reasonably well. Even without their two highly regarded midfielders, they have the likes of Sam Mitchell and Shaun Burgoyne in the heart of the ground with dangerous players like Cyril, Brad Hill and Liam Shiels thereabouts and they have class everywhere on the ground.

This should all prove to much for the Demons whose stocks are somewhat depleted. Even with their best 22 available they would struggle but this week, it could get ugly.

Hawthorn by 57 points.

We need to hit them physically and run and run and run.

Do neither of those and we will get pummelled.

We have a curious history of coming up against Hawthorn when they have been down a few players, imagining ourselves a chance, and then getting brutally whacked (in the figurative sense, at least more than the current Hodge/Lewis sense). I think in the past we fell into the mental trap of imagining the result would be determined by the condition of our opponent.

I'd really love to turn that around.

And we all know it - only sustained intensity will get us there.

I'm unable to write off this game. Which surprises me.

Had no confidence going into the Freo and Sydney game, but this one feels a bit different and I think we have a chance.

I had more confidence in the Sydney game than the Hawthorn or Freo games. I didn't think we'd win the Sydney game though. My girlfriend and I have been dating eight years now (she's Hawthorn filth) and we haven't won a game against them in this time. I'd prefer to win this game over the Freo or Sydney games. ;)

Do the team thing and split up...

Do the team thing and split up...

I am married to one HT are you suggesting divorce for the team?

I have a strange feeling coming into this game. Not one of optimism nor dread...just a strange feeling.

Not a chance in hell. Will be lucky to get within 40 pts

Just a temporary separation might do the trick.

Just a temporary separation might do the trick.

Yes that is it HT separate till the Hawks start to slide. Oh hold on we could be separated for the next 10 to 15 seasons! I expect Hodge and Mitchell to be still going around by then.

I wish daweswould choose his words wisely, its sure to add fuel to the fire.

What did Chris Dawes say?

We need to hit them physically and run and run and run.

Do neither of those and we will get pummelled.

We will get pummelled.

Nothing more than a gut feeling but I think we will push them. Don't think we'll win but think it will be closer than most expect.

Dawes needs to take a game or two for the team this weekend and use his physicality to upset the Hawks. If he cleans up Roughead I reckon that will be enough.

An eternal optimist, of the three I thought Sydney were the most vulnerable. For this, I give us next to no chance.

But I did enjoy seeing how thoroughly Hawthorn's system broke down in the last 10 minutes against GWS.

Their defence was very poor.

And Gunston, a terrific player but one who has had it easy because of the company he keeps, freaked out. I loved it.

I hope at the least we can give them the s&*@#s this week for a while.

The fish rots from the head, and Clarkos lack of discipline rapidly spread to Hodge and Lewis...

Pressure is building at Waverley, and a major boil over on the cards.

Demons to come out hard and not get caught...

;)

Because of Hawthorn's game plan I feel the contrast in styles may open up more opportunities for us than our previous two games did. We'll probably need to clobber them physically in the first quarter to put them off their game though. We may play a good first half and run out of legs and lose by 40-50, actually in a way that's the best case scenario

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
