Watching Friday night's game and lamenting on the six posters until half time, it occurred to me that there could be a fairer way of scoring that would result in more exciting football and create fairer scores. It would go like this:

RETAINED UNDER THE CURRENT SYSTEM

6 points for kicking a goal

1 point if the ball is touched

INTRODUCED UNDER THE NEW SYSTEM

18 points for kicking a poster (suddenly nobody would hit the posts if they tried)

9 points for outside 50 (like the NAB Challenge)

3 points if the ball is rushed (keeping the ball in play)

-3 points for kicking between the goal and point posts (penalising bad skill levels and unduly rushed kicks)

Just think, no rushed behinds, Hogan getting well rewarded for his close poster last Friday night, and accuracy and skill under being even more important than they are now. Just food for thought whilst watching Esendon's inaccuracy in front of goals yesterday.

Yeah, let's change the scoring so when we lose its by 300+ points instead of 100

At least the Song shares your optimism!

I can just imagine the ball shaving the post, but the umpire calling it a behind.

21 point turn around

Deaths of umpires increase by 3000%

Hmm, a bit complex and extreme, perhaps...

Russel Robertson was a big fan of the pre-season rule trial that hitting the post is play on. Can't imagine why!

I remember amusing scenes in that year's Wizard Cup - the ball had clanged into the post high up and bounced well back out into play. For a couple of seconds everyone was ignoring it and jogging to kick-in positions... then there was a kind of twitch that hit everyone like a school of fish all turning at once.

Posters are fun. This is not a part of the game that needs to be subject to bureaucratic interference.

One could improve a little on this, I think ... How about a target about 5m above the centre of the goals, and if you hit the target, then you get 12 extra points. Hence if you are running into an open goal, you can have a shot at the target rather than just dribble it through. You can always move the target to make it more difficult, so that if you are up by say 10 goals, then the target gets to say the 2nd level of the MCG ... :)

More seriously, if there is any change worth considering here, it is to play on when the ball bounces off any post back into the field of play. Think Jack Watts to Garlett in round 1 only off the post. Having said that, 3 points for a rushed behind may be worth considering, but then you get the attacking team having the option of scoring a "try" ... not sure that will work.

I like the target idea, 12 points, and when you hit it m m m m multiball! For 5 minutes 3 different coloured balls are in play, the regular red/yellow, blue and a black one.
Regular ball - standard new age scoring applies.
Blue - double points.
Black - triple points or you get the win if you can kick it into an umpires head.
- for Richmond games only, there'll be a 4th pink ball, for them to play with gently amongst themselves.

Sounds good to me. Surely you can score bonus points if the same player gets two or more balls, and then kicks them consecutively through for a goal (and hits the target of course). Talk about being able to kick with both feet!

The old double Kung Punt. Fans will love it, commentators will hate it.

Having to watch three balls at once might shut the #%%ers up for once .... :)

i'd like to see some equalisation factor added in too

The multiballs get released closer to the losing team's goal, depending on the score. On one each wing, flank or pocket and the third in the centre. Simples!

I was going to suggest knives and billy clubs for the team that is losing in a final 5 minute power play.

The tighter the angle, the easier to hit the posts, since the posts appear to get closer together.

EFA.

They're posts, not Ents.

Or perhaps get their sub on (with no need to take one person off) for the power play period.

That's a bit extreme mate.

How about - if it deflects through the goals, a goal: through the points, a point: OOB OOB.

And if it deflects back into play then use the current system.

You spoil all the fun! :) Extreme would be getting the opposing cheer squad to bear their bums at the goalkicker, and awarding bonus points for each one hit ...:blink:
