Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

This is a strange feeling, I actually don't care if he stays or goes, if he stays great but if he goes we would be well compensated, I guess when we are traveling ok we can feel that way

Go and smack yourself around the head a few times...please,.

We can't feel that way ever. And BTW we have won 2 in a row. We aren't travelling that well yet..

One thing that has helped us is the new low-interchange fast flowing style of play. The rolling maul, seagulls fighting over a chip style played for the last few years ... we just weren't very good at it. Whereas Freo were experts at it.

That rugby maul style was near unwatchable. God, it was the opposite of entertainment. Even leaving out that we weren't winning.

Now it's consigned to the dustbin of history and our players are loving it.

i hope you're right ted, but i wouldn't be surprised if some coach comes up with a new congested defensive game plan to either overcome their deficiencies or to create a point of differentiation.

if he is thinking about going back, the go home factor is the only thing that would be driving him now. Fremantle are cooked, yes we still have a way to go before we can show we are a legitimately decent side on the up, but Freo just lost to Carlton over there FFS. Their youth is questionable and their gameplan is horribly outdated. Melbourne will be prepared to match any offer Freo put on the table, the club knows how important Jesse is.

We have a lot of guys out of contract this year (Jetta TMac Garlett Tyson Watts), we'll be working hard behind the scenes to secure those guys then at the end of the year we'll throw everything at Jesse. The only negative I think is if he hasn't signed by round 1 2017 he is probably a 80% chance to leave.

Mayne and Neale are also speculated to move clubs at seasons end as well. Serious rebuild coming up for Freo. All and all, there's seriously been some terrible list management by Ross Lyon considering there is a real lack of young talent coming through.

And does Ross Lyon have a B plan in terms of game plan? He's never seemed to really change his system too much. Reckon they're in a lot of trouble.

I just can't see Hogan playing the next 5 years in a dismal Freo rebuild just to go home and make a bit of extra money.

They are factors, but surely will be overriden in the end by the fact that Freo are in deep, deep [censored].

I can. A lot of extra money. In Perth which he loves. For Ross Lyon, the Roos clone.

I'm not saying we don't have more reason to stay at MFC. But there's certainly a pull there. Freo aren't in a complete rebuild like Carlton. They'll be back into relevance quicker than people think.

Depends if Lyon has another game plan. His only game plan is irrelevant now. I think they might be in for a full rebuild.

Could be. Could be. Again... can he adapt...

I actually prescribe to the theory that they've been up for too long. I remember about 3 years ago mates from clubs not involved texting me about the prelim they played 3 years ago being the hardest game they ever saw. And in the following couple of years they haven't let up. If I say "maybe they're tired?" will I get smashed by 'land posters?

I think it's more a case of not winning a flag with the guys they've built a side around. Okay, Fyfe will probably come back and still be a star, but Pavlich, Sandilands etc. They had to win a flag when these guys were around, because there's just not that next batch of talent coming through.

It doesn't really matter if they're tired or not. They've missed their chance with the majority of this list.

Where does Lyon go next? I think he has to reinvent himself and build from the ground up, a new list. I'm not sure he's capable. It'll be interesting to see. One thing that seems almost certain is they're in for some pain.

A lot extra money is speculation at this point.

He might love Perth but that will be overriden by playing for a good team.

And it's Goodwin's plan that he loves, not Roos'.

Freo are stuffed. You say they're not like Carlton, maybe they're even worse. Carlton have at least admitted they need to reset and are starting to come out the other side. Freo aren't even close to bottoming out yet, let alone rebuilding.

- It's all speculation at this point.

- I can't stand this idea of "playing for a good team." Players have left for money over and over again. We have a couple of them ourselves. When Bernie came we were a debacle. So no, playing for a good team makes no difference as often as it does.

- That's speculation at this point. Roos is still the coach. And he played better last year when we were total team defence.

- Fyfe, Neale, Bennell, Sheridan, Taberner, Hill. All good. All young. They're better than Carlton. And Lyon's a sensational coach.

You may wish to disagree, it doesn't make a difference, but that post would have been repeated over and over again with every big signing, from Judd via Ablett to Scully. If you want to stick your head in the sand, then that's fine. But he's not signed until he's signed. We went through the Scully "I promise to stay" thing. We know how this works.

Mate I hope you're right.

I can't believe how little credit he's getting for Jack's revival. Not that Jack's a downhill skier, but he's benefitting massively from Jesse's double and triple teaming. So is Max.

They're not rebuilding, they're just crap

Freo are in a similar boat to where we were early in 2007. Went into the season thinking that at worst we were in the finals mix and then it all went horribly wrong after 1/4 time Round 1.

Freo are in a little better position in that they still have some good young players like Fyfe, Neale & Bennell (although he could be a cancer). But like us in 2007, they wont be able to fully start their rebuild until the end of the year.

Makes for a long season!

Fyfe has a serious injury so who knows where he's at, Neale is seriously considering outside offers, Hill is a good player but Sheridan and Taberner are no better than okay and will be exposed when the better players aren't around them.

If Lyon doesn't change his plan in a pretty big way they're going to be well off the pace come 2017

If us improving is so big a factor for Jesse's decision, why would he then leave when we do improve and Freo are a huge chance for the wooden spoon?

I did hear a whisper the involvement of the current coach going forward is having a bearing on drawing out the talks to seasons end. In fact i think there is quite a few players looking forward to the coach in waiting taking over. I reckon he will sign at the end of the year, once its clearer what the coaching structure is.

This whisper makes no sense to me. There is zero ambiguity on our coaching structure going forward. Roos is going - contract will expire  - Goodwin will coach  - a contract in place. I would be gobsmacked if there was any significant movement in the coaching structure at all.

And by the end of this season there could be an exodus at Freo. I've never been worried about Freo. It's another Melbourne club that I've always thought is more likely to woo Jesse. But if we keep up-trending, we can still offer him more than pretty much anyone else and hopefully the promise of sustained success. I think ultimately he'll re-sign with us.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
