All year he's been caught under the ball but has done a good job of making a contest and in many cases still taking the mark. Yesterday Frost read him very well and simply didn't let Hogan get a sniff in a marking contest. He needs to learn how to break off from an opponent into space because he's struggled with that all year. But his effort up until mid-way through the third was good. At that point he dropped off. Soundly beaten but still a competitor. All we can ask, really.

Frost worked really hard in that regard. Gotta hand it to him. He out muscled Hogan from the start.

Thought he was pushed under the ball on at least 3 occasions that I can recall....

Yep, agree. The arm-chopping rule went missing too.

Well, the young stud snagged 5 goals tonight. Now has 22 goals in 10 games. First Demon to kick 5 in a game for a fair while.

The only weakness I can see in his game is that he cant kick more than 45-50 metres.... really struggles to get height and distance on the ball. Looks like he tries to use his body for power rather than using his leg and kicking through the ball.

Aside from lacking penetration in his kicking(which is hopefully fixable), he is perfect.

He did also play on from that free and miss a goal from 5 metres out.. and he dropped an uncontested chestmark inside 50 late in the game

just sayin

MFC leading goalkicker in 2014: Chris Dawes (20 goals)

Hogan has already surpassed that and hasn't even played half a season. And it's his FIRST season!

Very special talent.

Reckon Johnny Howard was Prime Minister last time that happened....

Last one was sam blease vs st Kilda

Yep, big test with Taylor, Lonergan and Rivs to content with.

Hope we can kick if to him a bit better than the last two weeks.

Has a big task next week against Harry Taylor.

Wouldn't think Harry will pick him up, more likely to be Lonergan.

Still a big task though.

He would've kicked 10 yesterday if we were able to get it down to him with some kind of efficiency without handballing in circles a million times and turning it over consistently. He had to roam up to half back to get the ball on a few occasions because our inept defence/mids couldn't clear the bloody thing.

Much of the delivery was landing right on top of the forwards heads, just like last week. If it was a bit better I think you're right, he would have kicked a few more.

How does the rising star work?

Can he get another nomination this week?

Deserved it more this week, but players can only receive one nomination.

I saw someone post elsewhere (most likely here) that Jonathan Brown was exactly the same early on, struggling with the 45+ metre kicks.

Sure as it was with Brown that Jesse will be slamming them through from 50+ in no time.

He'd be disappointed about the 2 missed goals, and that easy dropped mark in the last.

He was also struggling a bit with tightness, getting lots of work done in the breaks and testing himself with fast short runs.

Thought he had a great game in terms of output, but scarily I've seen him play better.

One day he will rip a game open and kick 10. I just hope it's against Carlton this year.

I'd prefer it to be against Essendon. ;) Jeffy can kick his 10 against Carlton. :D

The kid played his eleventh game yesterday thats 11.

He is a beauty imagine him with a decent mid field and a decent CHF.

22 goals is a very good return from a 11 game junior.

Only need four Old. We have Brayshaw and hopefully Petracca makes it three

Wonder if Jono Brown and Hogan could get together for a chat and a few training sessions.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
