Make Dawes come back through Casey for two reasons - 1) I couldn't drop Frost on today's effort and he did a decent job as second ruck too 2) it might make him think twice before doing something stupid again that will cost him and potentially the team and set an example to the rest of the side that there are no automatic inclusions and spots have to be earnt.

Lamashtu I'm inclined to agree that dropping anyone will hurt what we did today. To me Dawes doesn't fit the football we played today, 2015 brand counter attack football, he fits 2010 brand compete at the boundary line and slow and steady defence football.

It's a really interesting point. You look at the way the competition is moving and the old fashioned notion of key forwards seems to have gone by the wayside. Clarkson and Hinkley have reinvented the game with goal scoring mids, and this is the direction Goodwin appears to be taking us (and I'm not complaining -- no Dees supporter with a sane head could, after the results today).

I know he's teared it up over the pre-season, but I struggle to see Dawes as much more than a lumbering pillar in the forward line. On his good days he's a beast; can lay a tackle, can kick a goal, can be ferocious. On an average day though, he has very little effect on the game.

The question I pose: who from today's squad would you have taken out and replaced with Dawes? For my money, not one person, unless you want the Suns to have won.

do u guys actually want Jimmy Toumpas to make it as a player for the Dees? I agree Vince is a better pick for next week but Toump seems like the kinda guy that would benefit from feeling like he is apart of it and he should get better as his confidence grows. With that being said i have nfi how we are supposed to fit Dawes and Vince back in today was amazing!!

I think there are good reasons for including both Vince and Dawes, and for leaving both of them out too.

Personally I'd include Vince, probably at Toumpas' expense though it's hard these days to do anything memorable as the sub (if he hadn't made that clanger in the goalsquare he'd have just had a nothing game, not something you look back on and go 'that was bad'. But you'd still put him up as the first one to make way if VInce was to come in).

I'm not sure what the answer is with Dawes.

Whatever we end up doing, this is so much more interesting than trying to work out which mediocre performers from Casey are required to fill the holes in the senior side.

But he is our number one tall forward. I know Hogan will go past, maybe quickly, but Dawes is 26, in his prime and will be there 5 years. How will Dawes adapt to the new plans?

Dawes is fitter and faster this year and on limited sightings he's holding his marks much better than last year. He'll provide the lead through CHF that creates the space for the other forwards. Hogan is already ahead of Dawes in a lot of ways. Any team worth their salt will send their number 1 key defender to Hogan and number 2 guy to Dawes unless he's in hot form, just as teams sent the number 1 to Frawley last year. However, Hogan isn't ready to command a forward line on his own every week, not one where the help is Frost (a defender having a go forward), Jack Watts and a debutant (vandenBerg).

I mean I'd love to believe that Frost, vandenberg and Watts stand up week in week out but I think it's realistic to expert Dawes' experience and size will be particularly handy in helping out Hogan. If Dawes' field kicking form is in reasonable standard (and he's a solid kick in form) then his defensive ability in such that he'll be very well suited to attacking style of play.

Dawes will come in. Dawes will/should make Hogan better.

Obviously Toumpas will make way for Vince, but it has to be out of JKH or Kent for me for Dawes. I;d keep Kent.

The versatile Frost won't be dropped after one game.

GWS is a smallish side like GC so on paper that implies that we can again go small and quick like them.

But the game is in Canberra which is not a massive ground, so we can lose an outside player because there won't be as much room for outside players.

Dawes is in the leadership group and I'd hate to be playing on him at a ground like Manuka, so mark him down as a certain inclusion.

But he won't be coming in for Frost because he is a mobile big - just look at all his tackles - and we have spent most of the pre-season grooming him to play as a back-up ruck and in case you forgot, we are playing his former side.

So In: Dawes. Out: Toumpas.

The question is whether Vince gets in, not Dawes.

I wouldn't play Vince, not against GWS coming off a shoulder. Treloar and Ward are arguably the hardest 2 blokes in the league. We'll need to match GWS for strength and toughness, while tagging Griffon - this will cut off their ability to execute. I don't think it will be a game to rush into any new mids, GWS have one of the best midfields in the comp. I hope we see Vandenberg spend more time in the midfield against GWS, we'll need some big bodies around the ball. I'd like to see us play Dawes, Hogan - and play Watts (or Hogan) out of the square. This will stretch their defense. JKH and Garlett will complete a versatile forward line. Providing we can win the midfield battle, we will be too much for them going forward.

Vince can take Brayshaw's role that was a lot of half forward and wing as well as some midfield time. Brayshaw then becomes the sub. Jones, Tyson, Viney, Crossy still do most of the centre square minutes. In fact Vince can even pinch hit at half back and Lumumba can get around the ball a bit more as well.

Thanks for reminding me of how much talent GWS have. They should dispose of St Kilda easily tomorrow.
