Ryan Crowley - banned substance

Take note EFC, this is how you cooperate with the process, accept the provisional suspension, don't make a song and dance about it in the media, take it on the chin and move on.

Was waiting for B sample before taking provisional suspension. I have no problem with him waiting for that right.

Was only issued an infraction notice on October 1.

(Or so I read)

Cocaine is an effective pain killer.

Footballers aren't necessarily the brightest sparks... maybe he was snorting propane?

Honestly, if this truly was an honest mistake, he must be a complete dimwit. The clubs all have doctors on the payroll for a reason. If you have pain, see him and he'll prescribe something you are allowed to take, and you won't even have to pay for the consultation unlike we mere mortals. Just taking something without clearing it first is asking for trouble.

I hope this doesn't tarnish his good guy reputation.

I suggest it was the opposite Nasher.

Cynical? yes with a capital C.

Same as Saad, should get one year minimum.

Should get the 2 years 'old dee'. There is no excuse for Crowley if guilty...

Scenario A is he's just plain stupid.

Scenario B is the following: club doctors just aren't independent. They give him pain relief then they also report to the coaches that Crowley has pain, all of a sudden he's out of the team with an injury.

Very silly, but now there's so much at stake for players in terms of finances etc these issues come up.

Management of complex injuries, personal illness and decisions on when to have surgery will see this issue come up more and more for professional athletes who work for a team.

Ridiculous. We already know he's taken something on the 'specified substance' list which means it's probably not a proven performance enhancing drug like a steroid but more likely something with some qualities that may or may not even provide the smallest of assistances. There's every chance a 4 week suspension would probably be fair enough and a fine to cover the costs of testing him for anything and everything in to the future.

Why are athletes subjected to a draconian law with absolutely no room for discretion based on the facts of each case?

Georgiou, if you take a substance, make sure it's cleared. There is no excuse for not knowing what is going into your body.

I hope you are taking the p.... here 'George'.

Possibly because we are living in the era of mandatory sentencing so beloved of politicians trying to get a few votes.

Is it that hard to avoid a banned substance? Surely the clubs and managers are drilling them with a list of what's ok and what's not. I know they're often not the smartest blokes, but surely it's not that hard....

Dont forget that lots of stuff that might or might not have performance enhancing properties can be used as masking agents.

Warnies diuretic is a classic example of this - not saying he used it as a masking agent but thats why his stuff was banned- because it can be.

Of course there's no excuse. There's also no excuse for speeding. No excuse for running a stop sign. No excuse for shoplifting a CD. But none of those crimes result in massive penalties.

100% serious. Why do you get satisfaction for ruling a guy out for so long for stupidity? Will it cripple Freo? Will it lead to Melbourne winning games? Was the slight edge that Crowley maybe (or maybe not) obtained for one game against the Giants so monumental that he should be banned for 2 years. Come on.

Those crimes aren't related to a profession sporting environment, I would have thought the Essendon saga would have made other players far more careful.

What was used in the original formula for Coca-Cola?

It was originally sold as a pharmacy med and apparently did have some cocaine in it.

Maybe he came across a really old bottle.

Must have been cross contamination from the last time he played against Essendon. He should wear rubber gloves if he intends to cling so close to his opposition.

So everyone can play the stupid card and get off with a light or next to no sentence?

I think it is more than stupid with what has been going on in sport of recent times, he has only tested positive once which is a lot different to only taking something once.

By the way...it has nothing to do with crippling Freo, I couldn't care less if it does or doesn't and as I've stated in other posts I want us to be tested against the best opposition and not hope that Ablett etc are out in round one.

It has a lot to do with the integrity of sport and if we are serious about it.

Just to correct my earlier post: Apparently, 'provisional suspension' is voluntary when it is a 'specified' substance. Not sure of the exact definition of this but goes along the lines that it is banned only on match day and could be included in various over the counter products. It sounds very similar to the circumstances for Saad. Crowley may well get 2 years for being careless.

Makes a mockery of the whole code when these guys can go along with the process then get 2 years for being careless whereas others fight tooth and nail to camouflage something more sinister (Ess players) and we are yet to see if they get hit with a small slap or a serious penalty.
