While indefensible I can understand why the AFL (are selfishly) trying to minimise the 'brand' damage and taking a soft approach to EFC. But as we saw yesterday with the 2 pies players the AFL 'can run but cannot hide'. It will keep happening!

Hopefully the latest cases spur the AFL to start a major 'No Drugs In Sport' campaign. They need to get the message out to kids and junior league staff/coaches of the dangers to health and sporting careers (and not wanting to be known as cheats)!

As you would expect today, the newspaper coverage of football is mainly about drugs. Michael Gleeson of the Age puts the view that "the Essendon players' drugs tribunal has become more a referendum on whether the club was guilty rather than a test of the players' guilt."

If it comes down to that with the Tribunal decision, it makes an appeal and the continuation of this long running saga even more likely. In addition, it will be interesting to see how the players can be let off the hook and the apparent main offender in Dank be sanctioned.

Too many things have to be explained away: the absence of records, the AFL's player education programmes, the invoices, quantities of thymosin supplied to Alavi, the waiver forms establishing that players had reservations about the programme and the text messages between key staff members and others including Dank, Robinson, Hird, Charters and Alavi, the inconsistencies.

What does logic tell us about all of these things and what conclusion can the three Tribunal members reach to a standard of comfortable satisfaction?

Disagree with this. This was a systematic black ops programme. They are all guilty.

No-one spends $600-700k and doesn't know what it was spent on and the results it achieved. To think otherwise you would have to believe that clubs don;t monitor their players to within an inch of their lives for skinfolds, blood tests, miles run, food intake etc etc. That suspends belief.

An argument strenuously put by David Grace, QC, for the players was this: we dispute the suggestion that the club sought and obtained thymosin beta 4. There was some contention that the club instead sought thymomodulin but, he said, if the drug that was administered to the players came untested out of a Chinese factory, who could be sure what it was? What was in it?

Surely if thats the case then the players have to go. If their defence is "we dont know what it was but we took it anyway" then it could have been anything!

I certainly care. If either of my sons came home stoned or drunk I would certainly care. I know standards in society might be dropping but there is no excuse for professional sportsmen to turn up drunk or stoned. How sportsmen train and play is affected by how they prepare and how they look after their health. It also tells you a lot about their personal standards and how seriously they take their profession or sport. As a supporter we should expect that our club and its players are seeking to attain the highest standards in regard to preparation and playing.

I can't find it on YouTube or elsewhere but is basically Tim Watson boasting that Channel 7 has "exclusive inside access" to the AFL.

If this was a real Court he would be in contempt with comments like that.
