Many at least of my generation would see great irony in seeing a player named Weideman in the red and blue. It has happened before, when the tradition of swapping jumpers after the GF was routine. RDB received the cup (or whatever they did then) in Murray W's jumper whilst Murray stood back enviously in Ron's. Ah....those were the days :-)))))))

So much for the thought of clean drafts after GC & GWS settled in. Half the prospects are attached to academies up north. Nice of them to leave a few crumbs for the rest of us to fight over though.

National Championships kick off this weekend, Vic Country play Metro on Sunday at Simonds Stadium.

Squads named and no Jake Lovett for Country in Rd 1. He is in the extended squad, so should get a run at some point. At this stage I'd say we'd be able to secure Jake with a low selection, but much can happen from now to the end of season.

Country look to have the most talent on paper with Weitering and the Darcy's Parish and Tucker the one's to watch. Metro have one of their weaker squads in recent years, which makes the overall draft depth this year quite weak.

Two clubs who will play finals, and may even finish in the top 4 or 6 get picks before us who will probably finish 14th-16th.

Such bull [censored].

If you pretend they are father-son picks you get over it pretty quickly.

Accept that in the case of GWS which hasn't been around long enough to establish a father/son connection but you can't justify the free kick the AFL has given to the Swans with their long history and their recent success.

Yet when one of their longest established clubs asks for special consideration as available in the AFL rules after 8 miserable years, it gets nothing.

And why is GWS showing up at 4 and 14? They get equivalent of 4 through their academy but 14 as well, is that coming through the continual draft anomaly from some mini draft compo? Does it ever end for these franchise clubs?

well, that depends on where someone bids on the kids.

no doubt mills will be bid on within the top 5, and hopper might too. then the clubs have to make up the points based upon a fancy algorithm.
