Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

AFL National Draft 2014 Pick 40

Am I missing something? With Jetta to be elevated, Stretch a lock at 43 (or 40) and recently adding Newton, don't we only have 2 live picks (2 and 3).

Your not missing anything.

We need to delist 1 more player. The major discusions points on some threads have been whether it is worth paying out Evans contract and delisting or delisting either Evans or Trengove and promise to pick them up as rookies.

Yep.

Depressing that we are a "bottom two team" and we have so limited list room.

Odds are very low that pick 40 and 50ish will be good players let alone stars but I like those odds over Evans and Matt Jones.

Spot on. 6 wins in 2 years, a list which will finish 16th or 17th next year and at this stage we're bringing in 3 kids with picks 2, 3 and Stretch. Staggering.

We have had to replace poor draft choices and we've done that over the last 2 years with Tyson, Michie, Frost and Newton. Sorted out some leadership and experience with Cross and Vince.

I do hope we can at least use pick 40 on someone like Gore though.

It's not staggering. We are realigning the list after so many failed years of drafting poorly. We hardly had anyone good between the ages of 20 and 26 when Roos took over.

The fact that we have brought in 9 players (plus Jetta) onto the primary list with AFL experience is a good thing if you don't want to wait for those draft picks to come good (if they do come good).

I think we will delist a contracted player and rookie them and use ND40 but I don't hold much hope for that pick.

Jetta (51 - 2008), Gawn (34 - 2009), Howe and McDonald (33, 53 - 2010), Kent (48 - 2012), JKH (40 - 2013).

I'd say that's worth a shot.

Much better than our first round pick record!

Worth 200k to pay someone out if they are unwilling drop back to the rookie list

Agree but I reserve my judgement on holding out hope on pick 40.

I'm not too upset with only using 2 picks (plus Stretch) in the draft.

In this off season we have picked up

  • a 40 goal small forward
  • a premiership half back/wingman
  • a full back (a downgrade on Frawley, I agree)
  • a highly rated junior midfielder
  • we look likely to get 2 gun mids (I'm ignoring McCartin after Roos' comments that he can't trust TAC Cup forwards output)
  • plus two rookies

So while we aren't active deep into the draft, we will have added up to 6 players who should walk into our best 22. Give me this over four extra speculative draft picks any day.

Likely either JT or Evans will be dropped to rookie list to enable pick 40.

I'd rather just pay out his contract if it's Evans. There's no point keeping him on the list, he is a clogger (harsh, but realistic). Sure it's a lottery at Pick 40, but why not try our luck since we don't know what 'player 40' is capable of yet, we know what Evans brings ... and it's not much at all.

A player, most likely Evans, will make way for Pick 40.

It's just a question of who we take with our three picks:-

Brett Anderson's Mock Draft which is mentioned above could well be spot on as far as 2, 3 and 53 are concerned. Here are the relevant picks according to Anderson who is a Demon at heart which makes his selections well reasoned, logical and probably wrong

1. ST KILDA – Christian Petracca Eastern Ranges

It’s a line-ball call but the Saints opt for the powerful midfielder in the hope that he can form a dynamic unit with Dunstan, Steven and Billings.

In the mix: Patrick McCartin

2. MELBOURNE – Angus Brayshaw Sandringham Dragons

Melbourne coach Paul Roos is an unabashed fan of the Dragons’ ball magnet and he fits the bill perfectly as a big-bodied inside midfielder.

In the mix: N/A

3. MELBOURNE – Patrick McCartin Geelong Falcons

Still in the mix for No.1, but shouldn’t fall any further than here. Teamed with Jesse Hogan, they’d form a formidable forward pairing for a decade.

In the mix: Jake Lever

...

40. MELBOURNE – Ed Langdon Sandringham Dragons

...

53. MELBOURNE (P/R) – Neville Jetta

But RPFC, in another post you spoke about how you can't see enough quality midfielders on this list come 2017. I couldn't agree more with you on this, and I believe we'll take Brayshaw and McCartin at 2 and 3, so where are the rest of the midfielders going to come from? We're going to pick into the 80's or 90's over the next couple of drafts?

I would have thought picks 40 and 53 in a very even draft would be wonderful opportunities to add a couple of extra talented midfielders for McCartney to develop.

I maintain that I would be staggered if a rebuilding club with the best development coach in the AFL only brings in 3 kids (Brayshaw, McCartin and Stretch) in an even draft.

I'd be absolutely stoked with Oscar McDonald or Ed Langdon.

SEN's mock draft has the Western Bulldogs grabbing Oscar at 23 but the WB selectors hopefully have other ideas.

Forget about 53 - that will be Jetta being upgraded.

ND40 is an opportunity to get a mid - I think we will delist a player to use it - but I don't think it is a 'wonderful' opportunity. It will be a speculative teen. the best opportunities for mids is ND3 this year and FA next year.

The point I was making is that the MFC has no spots for these picks because they have targeted experienced players to improve the list and team, including the midfield.

ND2, 22, 23, and 54 were turned into ND9, Tyson, Michie, and Vince. Riley and Newton cost nothing but the picks we won't use in the draft. ND72 (Riley) and ND53 (Newton).

So Roos has given up the kids we could have got for ND2, 22, 23, 53, 54, and 72 for ND9 (Salem), Tyson, Vince, Michie, Riley, and Newton.

That realignment can't be judged fully yet, but it looks very good at the moment.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
