Can I demand compensation from the AFL for the last 8 years of garbage I have had to watch ?

Its an absolute joke. Just spent 10 comments on facebook saying the rules about free agency compo and the people still cant get it through their heads.

Ironic that this is in a thread about not understanding compensation. It wouldn't matter if he was a complete dud - if he fit the formula, we would get the same pick.

No we wouldn't, what pick did we get for Sylvia?

Funny that, Collingwood don't find pick 4 alone acceptable for Dayne Beams the one time All Australian approaching his prime.

While on the contrary pick 3 compensation is far too much for our one time all Australian in his prime???

Countless times we have seen him shut down key forwards like that of Franklin and J.Riewoldt.

Any top four side would love him as he may be that vital difference that will shut down an opposing power forward and be vital in a win come late September.

Band 1 compensation (translating to Pick 3) is the only reasonable form of compensation.

The president of the Saints was just on SEN and was asked about pick 3 for Frawley. Keeping in mind this guy was supposedly the architect of free agency compensation when he was in charge of the AFLPA. And of course it was just absolute drivel questioning why we would get pick 3 for a player like Frawley, again bringing up that Buddy went for pick 19, so how on earth do we get pick 3? Seriously, are these people completely brain dead? It's a formula, end of discussion. It's going to be a long contract, he's at the age entering his prime, and he's looking at 600k. That's pick 3 in the formula.

Absolutely staggering that the architect of free agency, and the man running the club who lost Goddard and received a first band compo for losing Goddard less than 2 years ago, would come out with this tripe now? This entire campaign against us is sickening and pathetic hypocrisy at its finest. He then goes on to applaud the AFL for their $10m grant to relocate their training base. Amazing how it's fine for the AFL to look out for your backyard but not for others.

Apparently if we get pick 3 it's "inconsistent with the formula set up". Um, no, the formula is clear as day. If teams are prepared to pay enough for him, the compensation will be given out based on that formula. Doesn't matter who the player is or people's opinions of him, the rules are rules.

If we get anything less than band 1 compo, it will just go to show that the AFL as corrupt as it is now, just bends even more so (could it be even possible) to the larger clubs that will beach and moan when they are up, yet when they go down (inevitably), they will demand any advantage and charity they can get their hands on (and it shouldn't even be questioned............. they should be entitled to it).

If they were in the same position, they would be doing the exact same thing. Pharking hypocrites.

Frawley's value is probably a pick in the 5-10 range, if we finished 12th and were getting pick 8 as compensation no one would bat an eye.

must confess Im not sure on this one

Does selecting ( signing) a DELISTED free agent count the same towards residual situation and hence affecting compensation in the same manner as signing an UNRESTRICTED Free agent ?

cheers :)

I don't get the argument that Buddy is worth more than Frawley and the Hawks lost out. I also think the way compensation for clubs losing players is not looked at adequately. In reality, the loss of Buddy had little effect on Hawthorn. The won a premiership without him. The loss of Frawley has on the Demons will be greater as the club as we don't have 22 AFL quality players. Yes, Buddy is a better player, but his effect on Hawthorn was neutral.

Time to change the narrative around compensation. It should be looked at how a player will effect the team. Bottom clubs losing players should be compensated more than top clubs losing players. Maybe this way, this can counter act how Free Agency works completely against 'Equalisation'!

This thread should be called "Most people don't understand compensation"

This is exactly how it is intended to work by attaching the compo pick to a club's natural pick.

The forumla is club performance agnostic. It evaluates which tier the compo should be.

Then because the tiers are attached to a club's draft position, that is where the lower teams get a benefit that the higher ones don't. That's how a crap team can be better compensated for the same loss as a good team.

Why haven't the Hawks put in the paperwork for Frawley? It was announced yesterday he was going to the hawks, why hasn't it gone thru already?

Out of respect for Flower.

Frawley didn't see it as being right that he is leaving the club whilst one of our most loyal, who put up with a worse situation than Frawley, has passed away.

I'm not sure if I agree with this. This holds up the clubs recruiting strategy. Robbie would not want his death to hinder the club!

Some here don't understand it either.

You all do understand that there is a formula that gives a compensation BUT the AFL has the flexibility to alter the pick if they are not happy with the outcome.

Having said that - they should have given Hawks a lower pick for Franklin and given us nothing for Sylvia. If they didnt adjust the Franklin pick I couldnt imagine them adjusting ours.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the scorching morning heat to bring you the following observations of Wednesday's preseason training session from Gosch's Paddock. HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
